In addition to being a magician, a master of sleight of hand, and an avid collector of haunted artifacts, Charles Atchison is a killer guitar builder. We met on the road about ten years ago, and he has built me some crazy instruments over the years. The body of this lap steel was a 100+ year-old barometer. The neck came from an old Johnson-brand acoustic guitar. The pickup floats about an inch above the metal soundboard on a magnetic housing, and can freely move linearly between the neck and bridge, which allows for tonal changes (much like a tone knob). It's also strung with thick baritone guitar strings, which adds even more mojo to the low, mournful, creepy voice. I'm calling this first song played on this one "Voices from the Attic"

This is absolutely amazing 🤩
Sitting back, looking at the stars while listening to some dark blues played by Justin, and the mind can leave this world for some time.
I'd love to listen to this while on shrooms...
@@cobylyons4439 gitchy some and ride the frog dust while the wizard transports on his magical carpet made of wood and steel and hauntingly blue melody🍄🎵=😁
🎶👁👃👁🎵
yup . . . that's works for me these days
Super soft
Despite a lot of people saying this feels like something belonging in the Old West, or the soundtrack to it, what this puts me most in mind of is the original 'Tristram' track from Diablo. Same brooding atmosphere, same feeling of something being amiss. I absolutely love this and would love to hear more like it.
Yes! That is exactly what I thought too!
Holy crap I hadn't thought of that music in years! Yeah it's very similar.
You're right! I love it!!!!
That’s the first thought I had when I heard it! I’ve got countless hours listening to the Tristram music, still play D1 from time to time. Think I’ll stay a while and listen 😁
Wow such an unexpected and obscure reference but so spot on! It was nagging at the corner of my brain but I couldn’t place the familiar feeling. I was scanning the comments and all that popped out at me was ‘Tristram’ whoa Tristram Blues man you have something here!
I want a whole album like this.
Check out the band Tonbruket, I can't quite find the songs that do use this instrument, but I know some do. My favorite album is Forevergreens
I think I may be legitimately in love with this instrument. What an incredible sound!
It's more amplifiers and effects than the instrument. Put some tension on a wire and add pickup, you have a slide guitar.
@@robertpaulson2842 3/4 of that sound is in his hands
An instrument that looks as unique as it sounds, played brilliantly by Justin, so glad he shares so many of these one of a kind instruments
People used to play steel right?
would be cool if it also still worked as a barometer
@@matthewosterman9030 people used to play all sorts of instruments.
The days of digital studio (FL Studio) have kinda ruined it.
Very haunting. Old deep South. Beautiful!❤🍀🇮🇪
One of the most beautiful and entrancing things I've ever heard. Seriously.
This guy is rad! I've been a musician most of my life and he's one of my guilty pleasures. I'm a classically-trained trombonist and percussionist but whenever I hear this guy play it's like he speaks to my soul and I get instantly transported back to whenever this time should have been even if it was just a few days ago...
And this is why I'm a die hard fan of your work.
Justin makes guitars happy for the music they make. Hope somebody getting this down. A guitar whisper of highest level. Gives me chills and tears.
I thought the "built by Magician" was in reference to the guy's skill. Then find out that yes it was that, but he's also a legit magician. Awesome all the way around.
Ta da!
Wow, this is… magical. The feeling this song ignites within me, the story created in my imagination, it’s magical. Wonderful job!
Right? For me it's evoking a very specific scene, the feeling is one of foreboding but resignation and determination. Something bad is coming, but it's too late to run. All you can do is turn to face it, even if it requires every last bit of your bag of tricks - whether you said you'd ever use them again or not.
Love that dark haunting tone!!!!!
Very mysterious and beautiful!!!!😎🤘🍻
Baritone guitar is one of my favorite tones
This song is a must for the next bootlegger volume!!!!
Wonderful You always find the soul of every instrument you play Justin.
I consider myself very fortunate indeed that I got to see Leonard shortly before he died. Without a doubt the best performance I have ever seen. Class all the way. I often judge a singer by how well they perform this song. Now I might be judging musicians the same way. Justin you are top of the class.
Wow. Justin is an amazing player and an expert at letting the instrument play what it wants. Just a few minutes of tinkering around and he could play something cool on a stick, rock, and a piece of fishin line. I believe instruments can inspire players in certain directions and he reads em like a book.
I believe that given a minute, you could make any string sound haunted.
U got that right
The player matters more than the instrument I would say. This guy is the best!
He knows what he's doing.....
If i played it, the video title would be "Lap Steel built by Magician sounds like a liquid turd"
Not mercury ^
That tune reminds me of those old desert western movies.
Love listening to this driving at dusk in the savannah. Your talent shines with a soft brilliance. Thank you for sharing with us all. 🙏🏿
Truly amazing! Justin, you’re like an artist with a brush to a canvas; the brush strokes being each note. Always so great to hear your ‘painting’ in music!
Man! I had goosebumps with the first strum of those strings. Justin Johnson rides again!
Hauntingly beautiful sound.
Keith, I apologize. I didn't see your comment & said the same thing. Well, at least we think a like.
@@sweetsally1313 it's all good. JJ has great music.
Amazing. I like how expressive this instrument sounds. Like it’s telling a story but without words.
This sort of eerie westernesque music is very underrated. I love this kind of sound, and I really wish someone would take a crack at some western themed macabre on the big screen. It wouldn't need to be anything complex, something as simple as a rancher moving into an old haunted house in the mid 1800s.
Great idea like to see.
Check out "Bone Tomahawk" with Kurt Russell. Western themed and just plain SCARY AF!
ghost town music
For some reason, the association mentioned Jarmusch's film "Dead man" and "Serenity")). I really liked it, thank you.
hey Justin, would you be willing to make a video of your progress over the years of playing guitar, I think it would be interesting to see. You could include, who inspired you, did you go to any music schools, how you learnt how to play as well as you do etc. I think it would be a great video.
Please play some more on that magical instrument. The sound is absolutely incredible
.
M. ATCHISON, is a true Artist, and the Way of playing of Justin is so nice, the Sound is flying in the Air..
Congratulations to the both Artists !
I like so much to discover New Instruments every day, your Way of showing us the Beauty of the notes is a true pleasure, Justin !
I don’t know that a magician built it, but I know there’s a Wizard playing it!!!
Both confirmed
A truly beautiful song .... can't stop listening
It's great that some people are blessed with such talent.
When I get a chance to sit and checkout what's new on CZcams and see a new JJ video I'm glad.
It Always hits the spot !
Love how this sound makes me feel. Beautifully played.
And that raised goosebumps! THANKYOU!!!
Incredible sound, amazing what you are able to get out of an instrument!
I never get tired of this performance! Justin Johnson is amazing!
just love this sound. could listen forever.
I'm sitting on my boat in the marina is dark and the wind is howling through the sailboat mast listening to the song Unbelievable
Awakes all kinds of memories & emotions. Wonderful instrument & in the hands of such an artist.
My god Justin this is perfect!!!!
Your heart shines through here with every note!
Thank you with every fiber of my heart!
Looks and sounds like a lap steel banjo...
And it sounds really nice!!
That was amazing! I don't think that I took a breath or blinked once during the entire song. Thanks for another great video.
I really love this mystical sound, most of the time I look for that 'haunting quality' when I'm playing. It sounds a little nostalgic, eerie, spooky, mystical, and sometimes sad, just luv it! -&THANX for your great playing, I'm learning a lot from it!
Sounds great man! Bravo
I did not think I'd like this as much as I really did... And only after a single note... wow that was awesome
Time well spent. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, stunning instrument and amazing sound. So much character. Thank you for the great music!
It takes another magician to play like that! 😲🎶
Now that’s more like it - got to love this sound - reaches into my soul - need this on your next CD - brilliant!
All is missing is the haunted house!!! Glad you showed, told how this was made ,truly has a different "voice" with the baritone vibe, maybe a lap steel in the background and this playing out front would help it achieve even another level ? beautiful as always! Have been sharing your music for a long time now :) would LOVE to hear a montage or collection as a tribute to Toy Caldwell not necessarily top 40 but he had a lot of freestyle jams that are perfect for you! Thanks again Keep Rockin Peace. Rick
You always get the best guitars Justin :) This thing sounds built to make howling at the moon songs. Thanks for sharing as always!
A beautiful sound JJ , Charles Atchison new what he was doing when he had you in mind for this lap steel guitar . You could make some very high tension fill - ins for some deep swamp movies along the lines of " Jaws` " Da da Da da Da da followed by some mind pinging snaps etc , getting carried away now , he he , cheers JJ .
He’s gonna need a bigger guitar…
@@charlesatchison A beautiful sound Charles , thank you .

Awesome song! Thanks for sharing it!
Absolutely beautiful Justin. Thank you!
That has such a unique sound! I love it! It looks like a violin! 🤘🎸
I LOVE THIS SOUND! So much mood & emotion! You need to replace the annoying predictable crap heard in so many films. This made me think of the "The Last Of Us" game soundtrack even though I haven't ever player it.
My big brother is "guitarist extraordinar" Wayne Perkins from Alabama, also known as the White Wailer from his recordings with Bob Marley. He has a really long, long list of people he had the grace to play with from the Stones to Joni Mitchell. You really have mad skills, so glad you turned up in my list! 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸
You should definitely check out Gustavo Santaolalla's other stuff, it is really really cool. The last of us is definitely what I thought of, very zombie-game-esque. Little bit of left for dead in there too.
So beautiful !
TY for sharing.... Loved It..
This is an astonishing instrument. But of course, only magic-folk can craft a proper instrument for a man witch 🧙♂️ haha

@@Levienci "witch" refers to men as well, actually. A warlock is a totally different thing, they enslave spirits/demons to do their bidding.
@@tissuepaper9962 oh. huh alright
Man, this sounds like you could slot it right into the soundtrack for Hades. Amazing playing, and so cool that it's all from one instrument
I remember subscribing when you had like around 15k subs, you really popped off and rightfully so! You are so talented, you can tell the years of practice that goes into your playing. Keep it up! Congratulations on 1 million brother!
Amazing tone & performance Justin!
Absolute magic Justin Johnson! Awesome beautiful cool build Charles Atchison!!
Thank you!
😮
Just like your other songs, this sounds fantastic Justin. If it interest you, I would love to hear a song by the Black Crows for one of your future songs.
Justin makes my spirit animal lifts its ears in his direction. Love his music and much respect for a lifetime of dedication to his craft.
I felt this one deep inside! thanks Justin
Amazing!! You are also a magician with that instrument!
Absolutely beautiful ❤️🌹
Sounds amazing.
I’ve found myself revisiting this video many times. Blaring through surround speakers as I type this. Goosebumps.
Everything that you play is beyond amazing, but this one I love more than most 🥰 I hope you will do more like it
Magic on many different levels.
You just send me into another dimension anytime I hear you playing.
Justin is one my favorite things to listen to when I ride the Harley. It makes for epic mountain rides!
Wow! Beautiful!!
Next level haunted sounds from the soul!
Justin, do you think you could do a tenor ukulele video someday? I ve been fallowing you for a long time and i have learnt a lot from your skills and arts. Seeing you play the blues on a uke could be enlightening and nurturing for my very rudimentary skills. Cheers!
Check out my song “snowy morning coming down” I play a tenor uke on that one 👍🎸
Beautiful sound - awesome music!!
Haunting it is. Even the look of it. Great music as usual, thanks Justin
Przepiękna barwa dźwięku z tego arcydzieła sztuki :)
Tego baby tego!!
There's always something very haunting when a lot of minor chords are played.
What an awesome sound, love it!
Love it man, really speaking to a part of me I didn't know needed to hear this, in the future would like to use this in projects
Is that an old clock? It’s wonderful! I love the haunting sound.🐝🤗❤️
It looks more like an old barometer, to my mind.
@@keithhaycraft3765 Could be… whatever it’s made of, it sounds wonderful🐝🤗❤️

wonderfully emotive music played on a beautiful, wonderful instrument. Thanks man
Beautiful sounds.
How a man can keep coming up with such original and new compositions blows my mind - Justin is the Jimmy Page and Hendrix of our time.

that sound amazing, then again everything you play sounds amazing ♥️JJ❤
This is the first time I've watched your videos since my husband passed away. Such a amazing song.
Not many people can slap strings on a shovel and make music you want to listen to. Justin is a guitar Master.
My soul just left my body
Goosebumps though the whole video. Thanks.
Somehow I get the vision of Clint Eastwood, Lee VanCleef and Eli Wallach squaring off at the cemetery.
Glad to get some videos. It has been awhile. Just seeing those long fingers I knew it was Justin.
