Panama Canal Cruise - Day 6 Panama Canal Partial Transit

  • Hey Cruisers!
It's day six of our Caribbean Princess Panama Canal cruise, and I am up bright and early to catch our first pass through the Panama Canal locks. We found out early on that this was a really long and slow process. So instead of having hours of probably boring footage we have opted to use time-lapse for the majority of our passage through the canal. Sadly, the video quality does suffer a bit in that the results are quite shaky, but we couldn't think of a better way to show the trip through the locks. I'll give you a bit of information about the Panama Canal, and how the Panama Canal locks work as we show the time lapse footage. After we make our fist pass through the locks we will spend some time in Gatun lake. There are some great photo opportunities here, and since quite a few people have booked excursions, it's a great time to explore the ship. I took this opportunity to find a better viewing area for our trip back through the locks. Through out our Caribbean Princess cruise we had been wanting to try the Ernesto Burger at the new Salty Dog restaurant, but we found out that it takes 25 minutes or more to prepare the burger. Now that the ship is half empty, and we've got lots of time, we'll head over to the Salty Dog and do a little burger research. You've got to see this burger to believe it! We round out this vlog with a little footage of an amazing, but limited port where we will pick up the cruise passengers that had booked excursions. Thanks for watching our Panama Canal cruise video. Be sure to check back soon. We'll be post video from our stop in beautiful Limon soon.

OMG!! My day has been made! I literally got chills while watching this video!!
I had no interest in the new locks but this video has totally changed my mind! Wow! It looks phenomenal! I wish I could like this video at least 100 times!
Mr. CTTV, you did an INCREDIBLE job editing it!!

My family made the transit through the old Balboa locks 52 years ago aboard a Princess ship. We were returning to the US from a 3 year stay in Ecuador (military attache). As a 10-year-old, it was pretty boring, since the ship was primarily a cargo ship back then, with very limited passenger capabilities. My parents disembarked for the passage, going for the duty-free shopping, during which my dad bought a prized Akai sound system, which he kept for 30 years. Highlights for 10-year-old me: every afternoon, the Captain would come to the pool deck and toss silver dollars into the pool for the kids to dive for; the whole stalks of bananas hanging from the ceiling at the poolside buffet; the 'wave pool' that the *only* pool turned into when the seas were bumpy. Thanks for awakening awesome memories for this old lady. ♥

Nice memories of doing this cruise on the Coral Princess 7 years ago. I stayed on the ship and had a great spa day and sent hubby on the small boat excursion through all the locks. His excursion returned late due to heavy rains causing deep mud which was difficult for the bus to go through but he finally made it back to the ship about an hour after the time the ship was to depart. I have done just about every Caribbean itinerary, Alaska, and our last cruise was a 10 day Barcelona round trip Italy coast cruise in a Haven Spa suite on the NCL Epic (thank you NCL Casinos At Sea for that comp) which was wonderful, but so far my all time favorite cruise has been the 10 day Panama Canal. Thanks again for the memories. :)

Will be doing my Panama traverse here in a few weeks. The good news is, it's a 15-day cruise. The bad news is, I gain a pound a day on a cruise. Hope I can fit through Panama. Thanks the video was great.

shook look for the ones that are repositioning- they can be cheaper (they are all longer cruises so it’s relatively cheaper but still usually considered a bargain!). Have fun :-)

Thank you! Your videos make me feel like I'm back on the ship. I have transitioned the Gatun Locks (2009) and the Aqua Clara locks (2017) both over Thanksgiving week on a Princess ship and loved both experiences. Staying on board does let you enjoy transitioning the locks twice as well as relax around the ship.

We just returned from an Ocean to Ocean Panama Canal Cruise aboard the Island Princess. I watched your video prior to our embarkation, which was on March 25, 2018. There were so many great tips that you shared, such as (1) making a poster to show from our balcony, (2) watching the process of the Panama Canal crossing from different spots on the ship, and (3) staying stress-free about the schedule for passing through the various locks. We were delayed 3 hours during the transit because a cargo ship broke down in one of the locks. This meant we passed through the San Pedro Locks and Mira Flores Locks in the evening and missed dinner because we were still watching the process and did not want to leave the Sanctuary. We enjoyed seeing the canal in the evening as the lights started to illuminate the area.I re-watched your video today. You and your hubby (Mr. CruiseTipsTV) did an excellent job of capturing the Panama Canal, the new locks, and the surrounding area.

That was so cool. I am just back from my Feb 16 cruise. Great reliving it. What I found so neat was when you are in the locks you can see the water rise in the locks. The canal transit was the best. I would love to do the full transit. I wanted to give a plug for getting off the ship in an excursion and going to the observation center and seeing the ships enter from that view point. We got to see a huge container ship enter the locks with a little tug boat in front and a little tugboat in back. We just missed seeing the ship go back through. All we saw was the back of the ship as it went out of the locks. Incidentally it did not rain on ours. We entered the locks at 5:16 and dropped anchor in Gatun Lake at 8:41. We left there at 11:10 for Cristobal. We left there at 19:50 ( i don't know how to convert that.) I want to second your recommendation of the Salty Dog. I liked the hot dogs the best. But hamburgers were good. There was always a line. And then you top it all off with soft serve chocolate vanilla ice cream with chocolate sprinkles. This was absolutely the best cruise ever!

Hi guys, so very happy to finally see the new locks. We went thru the Gatun locks in 2011 and loved it especially seeing the 100 year old locks. It is indeed quite the wonder of our world. What we found different was in the new locks no mini trains to pull the ship through. Love the lush tropical scenery. We did the same as you guys and stayed on bored and it was so chill for a vibe but truly incredible to experience. Would love to do it again in the new locks. We had to laugh about the vintage 50’s video while you took a bite of the burger! Too funny!! Many thanks for sharing. Amazing video mr Cttv exhausting I am sure but know we appreciate it!

Loved watching you go thru the locks!! An amazing, miraculous feat of nature & engineering!! Maybe I’ll make it to the Panama Canal some day (I’ve only see the locks in Seattle & was fascinated by them & the salmon ladder)!! Don’t think I would have liked the Ernesto burger - kimchi & jalapeños - not my thing (for that matter - I don’t like beef burgers, prefer a veggie burger)!! Anyway - thanks for this video - it was great!! Loved seeing you & your son with your posters - so cute!! Looked like a nice day to stay aboard the Caribbean Princess!! Thanks Sheri (and family)!

Sheri, nice that you got to go into the new locks. We sailed Celebrity Infinity March 2016 when they thought they'd have the new locks done but they didn't. The good thing was we had arranged a private tour to see the new locks being worked on, that was interesting.

After grad school I took a position for a couple of years near a town called Florence, AL - Ohio River going straight though there has some super interesting locks for people sailing the length of that river - pleasure and industry. If you are nearby at any point, check them out!
