- We found a Specialized Hardrock on the FB Marketplace for $50. Spent almost $500 in upgrades only to find out that we made one big miscalculation.

I'm pretty sure that beating the crap out of a square taper crank is a right of passage in the cycling world...
I ran into the same thing with the same type of bike. I converted it to a twelve speed and learned what a hyperglide hub was compared to a microspline. Bought new hubs, watched a video on building wheels and rebuilt my rear wheel. It was a good learning experience.
You could’ve gone with 9 speed Advent group set without changing freehub, 46t x 30t chain ring, which would’ve given you awesome range.
You taught the boys a valuable lesson. Failure is not final.
⚰️
Mistake or not...your boys are going to remember this. The time you took. The effort. The admitting of making a mistake(none of us are perfect). The redirection to make a profit. The bonding. That matters the most! Bravo!
its really good to see the young lads actually doing the hands on work with supervision, and that "Plan B" worked. Nice work Dad
How much I wish I had had a dad like this.
Glad I found this video. I found the same bike and was thinking of doing same upgrade. Not gonna bother anymore. Thanks again!
I have rebuilt/renewed/upgraded about 60 bikes in 2020 as an amateur bike dad. Yes it needs the right tools to do such a project and it’s not as easy as most people think.
Amazing job!!! Just incase you run into this problem again. You can swap out the feehub pretty easily. It just uses a large hex key to screw into the hub. You may have to adjust the spacers in the axle but it is a pretty common change to make if needed. Good luck on the next build!
Awesome job turning your issues into a profit! I'm looking forward to the new bike build.
Great video. Now i knw wat to look out for wen getting a replacement parts
Very honest and authentic! Still a great experience with sons!
The crank puller stripped the threads because it wasn't snugged into the crank propperly top tip from a mechanic, use a spanner to fit it into the crank and tighten it as much as you can to get every thread engaged
Also with the bottom bracket, for 68mm wide bb shell frames you want two spacers on the non drive side and one spacer on the drive side however specialzed bikes often use a 73mm bottom bracket shell, with these size frames you only use one spacer on the drive side, then if you run a bottom bracket chain guide that takes the place of the last spacer.
Do you guys find that fork to have a bit of stiction? Mine works well but its a bit sticky, the action isn't the smoothest. On small bumps its a bit sticky, on large bumps its pretty good.
Ah that’s a bummer. I would have tried to find a cheap rear wheel but you did good on that profit.
How do you know how many spacers to put on the bb
you need to grease the crank puller before using it also make sure it's fully engaged i've taken out cranks much worst (fully rusted) than the one u got there with no problem
Huge props to you for admitting a mistake, especially on social media. That is a great value to instill in your kids. Politicians and many adults would benefit from this lesson. Your only mistake is not putting down newspaper or something under your work area to catch and see tiny parts that might be unnoticed when they fall / fly out. It would also protect the carpet from any grease which would keep Moma bear happy too!
Great tip. I've been lucky so far. On the other hand, my wife wants new floors, so ruining the carpet might make her day.😂
@@FrugalFitDad Shag carpet is like working on a car in the grass. It is real tough to find dropped things 'sometimes'...lol
@@FrugalFitDad if she reads your channel, she may just do it herself anyway and put the blame on you. 🤣
What bike stand is that that you are using?
Best bet is to use pb blaster let it soak and that will work I used it on my seat post
This is so great. I love seeing boys spending quality time with their dad being taught valuable skills. You can tell the boys love spending time with their dad. I love watching your wife Frugal Fit Mom too! You all seem like such a sweet family. Happy Easter!!
So far only a couple negative comments. I think taking a $50 bike + $50 in part and selling it for $325 was totally worth the time and teaching experience. You all rock ♡♡♡
I have the same bars the winder the better for handling
The treads of the crank puller must be fully submerged and or not visible or it will strip out

50$ for a hard rock? Lucky af
Oh man what you did to that original crankset was funny.
I did that upgrade on my 2019 pitch sport. But i did 1x12 instead of 1 x 10. Also. I used the sram eagle set. Which.coast about 400$
@Frugal Fit Dad - I am looking to get my dad a cadence monitor for his new recumbant bike, as he has starting really getting into it. What would be a good option for this? and can you use a cadence sensor on an outdoor bike?
Yes you can use them on outdoor bikes. Does your dad use a Garmin or any other technology with his bike?
@@FrugalFitDad he is new to his bike, he has an apple watch, he does not have any garmin products at this time
@@Kira-ne7qh then a wahoo or garmin cadence sensor should work.
You could have completely changed that freehub body on the bike and the hollow axel for another 30$. I have had to do it before. Or just re- laced the wheel with a better hub. It’s not that hard
Our LBS looked at the wheel and couldn’t swap out the freehub body.
I don’t cycle, but still love watching your channel 😁
I have no clue as to what you're talking about. Therefore, I'm not qualified to "beat you up".
Good dad! this is the way to start a good hobbies rather than playing hours-hours on video games!
We’ve all been there. It’s the cost of an education at the end of the day!
Great video
Same thing happened to me when i swapped my crank out lol
Idk man, id find a new shop if they dont have the tools to get a freehub off. At least it worked out for you though, who ever first sold that for $50 had no idea about bikes or had to much $$$ anyway lol.
Never forget your chainsaw during fall/ winter months. You never know when a wind storm is going to hit in the PNW. Battery charger for your vehicle is another great one. Cheers 🍻
a 3x can sometimes be helpful imo, but my next bike i'm absolutely not gonna have one
wide bars suck especially for kids-
should have shopped aliexpress get ltwoo or shimano parts for lets than microcrodshify- Please dont cut the steer tube until you ride and adjust and get it to the right height- - you can cut more off but cant add it back!!!!
Trial n error is how we all learn!
Quit beating yourself up. We all make mistakes. Atleast you will admit yours. The fact that you admitted it, makes your kids have a whole lot of respect for you. I’m proud of you too. Lol. 👍🏻💥🌈♥️👌😀
That’s alot of spackaroonies$!
That's what you call a happy accident. Wow!
wtf, there's a lot of cheap rear hubs out there. you don't need a new wheelset.
you got a very good bike for $50
replace the freehub!!!!! its an allen wrench
Yep. Tried that but not even the bike shop could get the free hub off.
❤👍
Nice try!
not even worth fixing and selling for 50 bucks... id just keep that bike for parts
Measure twice, cut once. it could have fit a 7,8,9 cassette but probably not 10,11,12.
No idea why folks want to pay $79 for the Advent X when there are way cheaper and better options.
The problem with this is buying a cheap bike and upgrading it where buying a more expensive bike may have been the better option with upgraded parts that someone else did that has depreciated.
You destroyed the frame of that poor bike with the sledgehammer. Ever heard of simply unscrewing the bottom bracket from the other side and pulling everything out. Or alternatively use a saw? Simply buy a new freehub body and replace the old one. No brain.
Can you give me a shoutout
Only one spacer in the BB
Worth every penny
