Planting Corn and Soybean Food Plot With 2 Row Corn Planter

  • In this video I plant 2 food plots. The larger field I split into 2/3 soybeans and 1/3 Corn. It is only a little over 1 acre total. Luckily we are able to get away with planting small food plots without over browsing from the deer herd. These food plots we don't really hunt over and are destination food sources. We plant these large food sources into corn and beans to supply the deer plenty of winter food to keep them healthy thought the winter so they can start off strong the following year.

    Anyone else jealous of how good his soil looks? 😂 I’m over here in Kentucky with light brown soil.

      Just because it’s dark doesn’t mean it has all the nutrients. We took soil samples in 3 of our plots including this one last year and found out our soil is very low in Potassium and low in Phosphorus. Organic mater is through the roof at 10%. But our heavy clay soil where we live about 30 min away from this property was extremely high in potassium and had adequate phosphorus levels at only 2% organic mater. The beans we grew behind our house on clay soil got taller and yielded higher than the beans we grew in this field last year.

      If you are planting multiple acres of beans and they are still getting over browsed because of the lack of ag in your area I would recommend planting just strait brassicas and winter rye. Down in Kentucky the rye should grow through the whole winter and supply plenty of green forge all winter long.

      Thanks, I’ve always included updates in my food plot videos, a lot of other food plot videos never have updates. Everyone is in such a rush to get the video uploaded. Then you have to look for an update video on their channel if you want to see results. Including everything in the same video makes the most sense.

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744

      It may look good but we need to add a lot of potash (k) and phosphate (p) fertilizer to get good plots like this. It’s very low in both. The video you commented on before this one is in our backyard on another property with clay soil that’s pretty hard to work but much higher in nutrients and doesn’t need as much fertilizer. I think black dirt like this is overrated, all it has is it’s high organic matter content because it’s a kinda low area, but a lot of black dirt like this seems to dry up fast when worked, whereas the clay ground holds moisture very well.

      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  Před 4 lety

      We put in a plot last year into beans and ran a few rows of corn as screening and everything did great. I probably could have don’t more like that this year. I think in the future I may try planting the beans one direction and then planting the corn rows the other direction creating a checkerboard effect. I am not sure it will add double the food but having beans mixed with the corn will definitely add some food that’s for sure.

    Great job on your plots. I enjoy putting mine in every year. I usually walk my fields with a backpack sprayer to kill the weeds but since I have more plots to spray this year I bought a atv sprayer. I was wondering what you use to spray your plots and does it hurt the corn and soybeans when you run them over with your tractor or atv? I don't own a row planter yet so my seeds are broadcasted but I tried over seeding a little just in case the tractor and or atv tires kill the soybeans and corn when I spray them. Thank you for your help and keep up the videos.

    • @wolfpack4128
      @wolfpack4128 Před 4 lety +1

      For non-RR corn you can kill broadleafs with 24D. Beans are a legume so in a pure stand you can spray 24D for broadleafs and clethodim for grasses (don't mix them, spray one then the other).

    • @wisconsinwhitetail9744
      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  Před 4 lety +3

      I used to walk mine with a backpack sprayer also. I use a gas powered 25 gallon cart sprayer for the corn by straddling the rows. The boom is only about 6 ft wide. For the beans I used a 15 gallon spot sprayer. I can spray about 10 yards one each side of the atv. Using the spot sprayer wand I was able to do less passes. Beans are pretty hardy and usually pop back up and are only stunted a little, but corn pretty much dies once it’s ran over.
      I wouldn’t use 24D on soybeans, it will severely stunt and almost kill them turning them yellow and not palatable to the deer for the rest of the year and drastically reducing yield. I learned that the hard way a few years ago.

      @@wisconsinwhitetail9744 my beans and corn are both roundup ready. I have a 25 gallon boomless sprayer that covers a 10' wide strip each pass so I may try using my wand to see how much it will cover before driving through either the corn or soybean plots. Most of my plots are also anywhere between a half acre to 1.5 acres so I'll just spray in as far as I can and just drive a few passes on what I can't reach the spray wound. Thank you for your help and I hope your plots get doing great.

      @@wolfpack4128 Thank you. My corn and soybeans are both RR. My main question was wondering how much damage the tractor or atv tires do to the crop while driving through it to kill of the new weeds. I think I'm going to use my wand sprayer and spray into the plot as far as I can while driving the perimeter and then drive through with my boomless sprayer that covers a 10' width each pass to cover the rest of the plots. Most of my plots are only between a half to 1.5" acre plots but I thought I'd try my atv/tractor sprayer this year to save some time. I just didn't want to ruin all my plants since I don't have a row planter yet but I did over seed some to hopefully take care of what does off. I like trying new things each year planting so I guess I'll just see how it does. Thank you again for your help.

      @wisconsinwhitetail9744  Před 4 lety +1

      We built that box blind a few years ago thinking we were going to hunt there a lot. Since then we on average probably hunt in it 2 times a year LOL. Even if we had screening I think it would still be hard to get out because the door and steps and kinda noisy. If we hunt out of it, it will probably be during the late season on a one and done sit. I like hunting from the ground blind better anyways. You can hide it a lot better and you don’t need to climb down, you can just sneak out the back.

And then drilling the corn at 38 in rows the other way creating a checkerboard effect. Last year when we planted all our corn at 38 in there was some light getting in and some weeds grew back.
