  • To mark 250 years since the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, the Salzburg Marionette Theater was commissioned by the Beethovenfest Bonn to stage the German composer's only opera, 'Fidelio.' Go behind the scenes at rehearsals and find out what special challenges this production presented.
With a history stretching back more than 100 years, the Salzburg Marionette Theater is an institution with a rich tradition. At this opera house in miniature, the works in the repertoire are performed just like full-scale operas - including dancing, singing and acting. The wooden 'cast' of around 500 characters is supplied by the theater’s own workshops. Similarly, the costumes and sets are crafted with skill and love for each detail. In September 2016, UNESCO added the Salzburg Marionette Theater to its Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

    3:15 You mean 1913, not 2013.

Thank you very much for this comment! Yes, the theatre was founded in 1913 (an not in 2013). We apologize for this mistake!
