- MY SURLY OGRE BICYCLE TOURING SETUP
Hello. I'm Buffer and welcome to my CZcams channel WheelPositive.
In this video, I will cover what has easily been the most requested topic over the years: a tour of my bike and bicycle touring setup.
I haven't done it until now because, after four years of bicycle touring, I finally feel my bike, bags, racks, and the entire setup is perfect for my bicycle traveling style.
My bicycle is a Surly Ogre. It's the first touring bike I've ever owned and will probably be my last.
I love this bike, and I call her Agnes. Why Agnes? I don't know.
I found her on Craigslist about four years ago. If you're not from the US, Craigslist is an online classified. I paid $900, and in hindsight, it was dumb luck. Not just because of the price but also because I knew nothing about bicycle touring. In fact, I had only recently learned that that form of travel even existed. So without knowing what I was doing, I accidentally chose the best touring bike I could have hoped for.
I originally went with Surly because of the good reviews, and I liked the company's gritty, casual, anti-spandex attitude. It had a counter-culture vibe that was badass. However, over the years, I've learned that the company isn't just cool, but it's synonymous with quality. I've seen more people around the world touring with Surly's than any other brand. Again, dumb luck.
The Ogre is a great touring bike. Over the past few years and 10,000 plus miles of riding, I have made a few changes/upgrades to Agnes. In this video, I try to cover them all. However, if I need to remember anything, please comment. I'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions.

Such an amazing granny gear.
Thanks for showing us your bike and your setup. Looks luge you got a good deal cause I know it’s an expensive one. I tour and that’s why I was interested in seeing your rig.
Like your enthusiasm. Thanks again for sharing. Om!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Om!
I was hit in 2012 and spent 2 years down, couldn’t ride at all. I started researching my next bike. I found surly ecr for bikepacking. As soon as I felt better I went to my lbs and ordered the surly moonlander for beach riding and went back a week later and ordered the ecr and the big surly trailer. I have been riding surly for 7 years now and love every single mile.
They’re the best. Hands down.
Nice setup. I decided on Surly's rear rack after breaking my Trek 920 aluminium rack crossing the U.S....AND I also am getting ready for my 3rd set of Almotion 29x2.15 I have yet to get a flat going up the Pacific coast, crossing the U.S. & riding the Southwest desert. Rocks, goatheads, cactus, glass, tire shards, you name it. I contemplated getting the SON hub with the Cinq but decided to go with a 28 watt solar panel & 20,000 mAh battery. By the way, modern bike had the Surly rear rack on sale this month for 130 something. Right now it's 155 with free shipping.
Nice bike and good choice on all your upgrades. My Twin Adam is thinking of getting a touring bike and he is looking at a Surly Ogre.
Hey Buffer, your videos keep me inspired while I plan for my tour later this year. Thanks for the content!
Thanks. Do you know where you’re going yet?
@@BuffertheTourist The plan is to tour through Cuba. I went there when I was younger for a week and told myself I'd return one day with my bike.
I’d love to bicycle tour Cuba. I was there 30-years ago. Such an amazing country.
havent' heard the word "futz" in decades, love it
I think I said fuss. Which is just as bad. That’s what happens when your brain aborts saying “fuck” mid-sentence.
Love it great bike and video
Thanks
Just debating between Ogre and a Salsa Fargo with a Rohloff and Gates drive in the future.
I am a smarter touring cyclist tonight after watching this video. Thank you
Thank you for the comment 😊
We have ogres as well and are planning a cross country trip this spring. Are you going to visit any megalithic sites during your trip to Boliva? That is on my bucket list. Good luck and stay safe.
Nothing on the list. I’m hyper focused on cycling across the salar. After that? Is there anything you would recommend on that’s on the Altiplano?
Finally I found you, didnt get your channel name changing; no more age highed probably. Last seen you ridin Greece. Yeah, Surly surely seems to become more and more appreciated. I guess for a reson . RIDE ON
Did a branding change. I liked AgeHIGH, but it’s not available on Instagram. So @wheelpositive it is.
Nice bike 👍🏼
Thanks
Good
Nice video
I have a salsa Fargo
I might suggest a water filter
Always good backup for water
I use cnoc water bladder and screw on water filter
I ended up bringing an MSR bladder
@@BuffertheTourist
Great idea
I used a water filter and bladder on my AT hikes
Just started carrying on my bike trips
Enjoy brother
Nice one, nice bike. Rare as hens teeth. What do you carry on the front rack? Sorry you might have said.
Not sure yet. Probably my tent and sleeping bag.
I was 8 minutes in when i noticed the music
What do you use for a light? I want to add a light - but have an ortlieb handlebar bag and will need something that can project over that.
I use an Edelux. There’s a video of how I mounted on my channel.
Hey Bro!!! I have a new Surly Ogre ordered and on its way and her name is Danielle. What size wheels are they 29" or 27.5" and how wide are they
Congratulations! They’re 29” x 2”.
Grateful to know your height and the size of the frame. (I'm assuming you've been happy with your frame size.) Thanks!
Very happy
I’m 6’1”. Weigh 170lbs and my frame is a large.
I have a fat bike named Chubby
A mid-fat bike named the Beast
And a road bike named Jag
MY BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY, VIVA BOLIVIAAAA
So beautiful 😍
I'll never understand why people can't just pack their bags and cycle instead of making sure they video everything from every angle for everyone else. A cycle should be something for the cyclist, not the world. Put down the camera just for once. People look but don't see anymore. Our world has become such a sad place with this generation and their social media
Just do you.
@@BuffertheTouristI enjoy watching bike setup videos. I suspect many people also enjoy videos such as these.
Setting my new Ogre this week. These videos help me know what other riders have found useful on their builds/journeys. I dig em!
I completely disagree with the "just go tour (a long-term tour) with whatever type of crappy bicycle and gear you can put together.
Cheap gear is HEAVY and doesn't pack down really small. It is also prone to break and not perform well over a long period.
You're setting yourself up for a failure somewhere down the road. Which can leave you in dire consequences.
The whole...if you take your time and wait to buy top quality gear you'll never get out and go on your tour, is horse-shyt logic.
I have a Catrike Expedition recumbent trike with top quality name brand gear that has been tried and tested for top performance....Ortlieb and Radical Design and Arkel panniers. Sea to Summitt, ThermaRest NeoAir Xtherm air mattress, Enlighten Equipment quilt.
The best gear equipment.
This took me approximately 4-5 years to acquire everything.
I was focused and determined to know that not only, do you get what you pay for, but It was going to be light, pack down small and last.
There is such a thing as being focused and disciplined on sticking to something that may take a while to acquire.
When I go out on my tours I am enjoying my time because my gear is quality lightweight and performs well.
