I've ridden on a steam engine before, and it's so surreal being next to one of these fire and steam breathing, behemoths. I know engines aren't actually alive, but I couldn't help but feel like, in a way, it was. And _Thomas and Friends_ definitely helped spark my interest.

As Britt Allcroft stated before in the MRR documentary, she wanted to give 'every child a feeling that they could step into this world'. And something as classical as the model series made Thomas in a way that is so real and as a kid, I always wanted to meet the trains because of how lifelike the engines and sets are. Steam locomotives are the true highlight of railways: the chuffing noises, the sound of a whistle and to all men and women 'they have a personality and human characteristic'.
And I agree about the shot of Henry in 'Fish', it really makes us look up to him like a real heavy engine slowly making its way past the camera.

This is one of the exact reasons why The Classic Series are the best. All the engines almost felt like they were actual trains. David Mitton really knew how to make Thomas and Friends realistic, unlike the other directors. As Unlucky Tug's analysis of Season 4 in general also brings to light, not only is 'Fish' a perfect capsule of how heavy-handed steam engines are in presence, and how night-time visuals can be so picturesque, it's also an example of a story that is improved on from the original source material. In the book version by Christopher Awdry, Duck only comes into the act practically halfway through with no setup, and although the damage he inflicts is more telling in the book, it is by pure chance that it all happened. Thomas is only mentioned at the end by Duck; by showing a scene of Thomas talking to Duck at the Harbour before Henry sets out, establishing Thomas and Duck's uneven dynamic as a set-up point, we get to see in the episode how it impacts Duck later on. @@randomnessetc5600 Yeah, I get your point, Thomas has come off the rails because of Mattel's mishandling of him and his friends as well as the plots for the stories, especially with the mini series and All Engines Go.
From the way I see it, Mattel is missing the point on who Thomas is: he isn't just a brand made to satisfy business executives as well as sell toys to make money to satisfy their greed. He was made to make a child smile again, and the whole series was created by a father who just wanted to see his son smile again through a difficult time. That father was Wilbert Awdry, the author of The Railway Series, and his son was Christopher. And fans who want to keep the memory of this little tank engine and his friends' many adventures alive for years to come, would create their own stories, hopefully not forgetting what made them as special as they were back in 1945.
Thomas and Friends has brought us wonderful characters and memorable stories... stories that we continue to tell to this day because they're worth telling and worth remembering. I'll always have a special place in my heart for those characters and their stories as long as I live.

My parents still have VHS tapes full of my childhood memories. One of the first things in the recordings was of me, pointing and jumping excitedly at passing trains. They weren’t steam engines, but I was blissfully excited regardless.
Further on in the tapes, it shows my first time actually riding a train. It WAS a steam train this time, and of course, it was for A Day Out With Thomas (the engine they got was a pretty good replica of Thomas). I still remember how massive it all seemed, how loud everything was. I remember how the tank engine hissed with steam between its wheels, and how I heard it’s long and loud whistle proudly roaring over the vast crowds. The coaches were… sadly not Annie or Clarabel, but they were still pretty and comfortable.
Sometimes I wish I could relive those memories.

I'm not sure when it'll happen. But one day...
I will ride a steam train. I've taken rides on miniature steam locomotives, and diesels. But nothing is like riding a steam train. Someday, when I'm older, maybe it will happen. I'm still hoping for that day to come soon.

@@invisibleman4827 actually, I live in Canada. Canada has very few steam trains left. the only train-related things that I have in my area are preserved trains and miniature trains. Not much of a selection. But when I get older, I will move to another place that has plenty of steam locomotives. Someday it will happen. Also, the only place where we do go on holidays is The Clarendon Station, a recently renovated old train station. That’s pretty much it. Anyways, I will stop yapping.
