  • Tokugawaen, also known as Tokugawa Garden, is a traditional Japanese garden located in Nagoya, Japan. It features a central pond surrounded by winding walkways, waterfalls, ravines, and various types of vegetation. The garden's design, characterized by its hilly terrain and large rocks, reflects the style of major daimyo gardens from the Edo period, symbolically representing the Japanese natural landscape.
The garden was originally established by Tokugawa Mitsutomo, the second lord of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa clan, during the early Edo period. After changing hands several times, it was donated to the City of Nagoya by Tokugawa Yoshichika in 1931. Although the garden was destroyed during World War II, it was later restored and reopened in 2004.
Tokugawaen is located on the same grounds as the Tokugawa Art Museum and the Hōsa Library. The Tokugawa Art Museum houses a vast collection of samurai artifacts, artworks, and cultural treasures from the Tokugawa family. Adjacent to it, the Hōsa Library contains historical documents and materials related to the Owari Tokugawa family, making this site a rich cultural and historical complex.
Tokugawaen, alongside Shirotori Garden, is one of the two major gardens in Nagoya, and there is a common admission ticket available for both.
