This is really true. People always argue that he didn't have the same level of competition. Fact is, in his prime, he made people look slow.
This is what is special for me. He won on the 500cc monster. He dominated on the 4 strokes will less electronics. He is a sporting icon and will be remembered so fondly.

"Same level of competition" is a fallacy. It is much more likely for one driver to be better than the average, and therefore for the rest of the field to not become world champions, than a whole generation of riders being subpar.

It's exactly races like this that prove Valentino Rossi was, is and always will be on another level compared to other rides. He battled with so many and won against so many in the most surreal of circumstances. His last podium came when he was 41 years old! Nicky Hayden gets a podium in his first race ever at Australia, he got 2 podiums in his first year, considering he had never been on a GP track before joining GP in 2003 lots of us in America were insanely proud. Just a regular ole boy from the country went to GP and won a world title during Rossi’s legendary championship run.... people who didn’t witness Rossi’s run in real time cant understand how unbeatable he truly was.

In Hayden's best years in 2005 and 2006 Melandri had more wins than him on the Gresini Honda. Just unlucky imo to finish just 24 points behind Hayden in 2006. His drift at the last corner in Philip Island 2006 just before he won the race is classic. Pure skill.

@@NoLuckJKMY807 Nope I said Melandri has more wins than Hayden in MotoGP and both of their best years were the same.(2005, 2006). And Melandri has a lot of other wins and World Championships in other classes like 125cc, 250cc and World Superbike to back this up. If finishing above Factory backed Hayden in 2005 and again in 2007 but just behind in 2006 isn't unlucky. I don't know what is.
I watched this race live...it might be the best performance of a motorcycle racer i have ever seen. back when everybody was basically on the same level of bike...Rossi simply said 'Eff it' and commenced to crushing. I would have loved to see Rossi, Doohan, Stoner, Marquez, Schwanz, Rainey, & Lawson all race at their peak...that would be very interesting to watch

This is the era when skill of the rider matter the most. Not so much ECU as motogp nowadays
That's only half of the story. In the end skill will always be the key in motorcycle racing. Just have a look at Márquez in his last victorious years for example.
@@jicklesjingles8134 not really, Marc has been riding in MotoGP since 2013 and by that time software technology was way advanced compared to 2003.
Marc took multiple chances knowing that high sides will not happen as it controlled, hence higher number of front low sides. Remember when Honda's ECU miscalculated and throw off Marc in Malaysia and started the problem of his injuries.
Marc was fast because he was taking chances and when you ride like that then you are just pushing your luck. Honda was made for him and he rode it well.
Valentino and other riders from those years rode motorcycles purely based on the feel and skills. Complex ECU stuff came much later in MotoGP. Now it's all about budget, in 2004 Yamaha with Valentino won races and championship with a smaller budget. No one can do that now.

But in 5-10 years time most people will watch races that happened when Marc, Rossi and others like Stoner, Lorenzo were fighting against each other and the newest races. A very small amount of people will watch 2020 and 2021 races in 5 years time. It's the truth. There is no excitement to go back and watch the races that happened in these 2 years. Most of them.

I've been watching MotoGP and it's predecessor since the 1980s, so I've seen several different eras, and I've seen great riders come and go.
We've never had so many competitive manufacturers, and we've never had younger competitive riders....with more lining up in Moto2 and Moto3.
Yes, there's some deadwood, but there's always been deadwood.
I simply don't buy this nonsense that MotoGP cannot survive without Rossi on the grid.
If people want to switch off then fine - they won't be missed.

I mean people will watch the current races as they come but these races doesn't have much historical significance as the ones we watched with Rossi dominating, Marquez dominating, Or Lorenzo, Stoner, Rossi all up against each other. In the near future only a small number of people will rewatch most of these races that happened in 2020 and 2021. They just aren't exciting to go back and rewatch like the period before this with Rossi, Marquez, Lorenzo, Stoner at the top.

@@NoLuckJKMY807 No he went straight into the factory Yamaha team in 2003 in his rookie year after winning the 250cc title in 2002. The sponsor of the Factory Yamaha was Fortuna in 2003. So strange to see the factory bike in this colours. Then in 2004 Gauloises became the sponsor of the Factory Yamaha and Rossi joined and the factory livery changed to normal blue. While Fortuna sponsored the satellite Tech 3 Yamaha and Melandri spent the 2004 season in the satellite Yamaha team before begining his peak MotoGP years with Gresini. Similar to what happened to Alex Marquez. Although Melandri got his 2 podiums while with Tech 3.

@Troy Clark- A Life In Racing why Valentino was left from h0nd4 because of h0nd4 arro94nc3, they told to valentino that valentino can win because of the bike, not from a rider, now h0nd4 is getting karma, the fact is that h0nd4 is the worst bike in motogp without m4rc, because h0nd4 made a bike that is only suitable for mm h0nd4 doesn't thanks to valentino who at that time valentino was able to build an RC211V that is easy to ride by all riders HAHAHA

I've been watching MotoGP and it's predecessor for over 30 years - I watched these races at the time.
If you think the current MotoGP spectacle is "boring", don't watch - you won't be missed.
There are plenty of people happy to watch MotoGP in it's current form.
There's certainly nothing wrong with watching old races, but not everyone can devote all of their time.
If you watch an entire BSB weekend, an entire WSB weekend and an entire MotoGP weekend you'll barely have time to do anything else.
