    Movies are great!
but they cannot actually express the same way a book does!
Tolkien's vast universe goes well beyond Peter Jackson's vision of Middle-earth!
that includes several characters who are so epic that they are yet to appear in a film.
So today, we are ranking the Strongest Beings in the Lord of the Universe.
    #lordoftherings #sauron #hobbit

nothing is ever perfect (this comment includeded) but...
    Issues
    1. Gandalf is referred to as one of the Maiar, but Gandalf is an Istari, Olorin is a Maia. It seems pedantic but it recognizes that the Istari are a more restricted version of the Maiar. If you are going to break him out separate from the Maiar, at least recognize that it's only because he's limited.
    2. Gandalf didn't become more powerful when he came back, he was just allowed to use more of his already existing power. The Istari had failed (Saruman wanted lordship of his own, Radagast only cared about Nature, not fighting Sauron, and the Blues weren't making any noise in the fight either) so Gandalf was the only representative that was doing the job. When Eru sent him back, he loosened the reigns a bit since he was the only one representing and he had already shown that he was acting responsibly and not abusing his powers.
    3. As wise as Galadrial is, Gandalf/ Olorin was considered the wisest of all the Maiar, if not all the Ainur. That's not to say that she isn't incredibly wise, but she's no Gandalf.
    4. The Maiar are not "assigned" so much as they were drawn to hang around a Vala with a similar mindset. Just like modern hobby clubs.
    5. Mairon is a proper name. It's just Mairon, not THE Mairon.
    6. Sauron is not stronger than any of the Valar. He was juiced, but not that much.
    7. Sauron doesn't BECOME the one ring. It contains a large part of his essence/ power, but not his consciousness. Its continued existence is what allows his spirit to stick around in Arda, but he's not able to take any physical form (ignore the flaming eye pot device in the movies) unless he has control of the ring. Once the ring is destroyed, taking that huge chunk of his power with it, his spirit is cast into the void. So, he still exists, he's just stuck in the void like Melkor.
    8. There is not a theoretically, Sauron is the lord of the rings. Most of the story is about how the lord of the rings was defeated. Frodo's addition to the Redbook is called "The Downfall of the Lord of the Rings and the Return of the King". Where did you think the title came from or who did you think it referred to?
    9. VALAR is the plural, VALA is the singular. No letter s is used to pluralize.
    10. The Valar aren't THE 14 Ainur. The Ainur encompasses all the Valar, the Maiar, as well as all the Ainur that did not enter Ea. Valar and Maiar are just power classifications differentiating the Ainur that DID enter Ea.
    11. Maiar is the plural, Maia is the singular.
    12. THE Ungoliant. Again, proper name, no THE.
    13. He was saved by balrogs, not THE balrog. It was plural, not just one. There was never really a singular balrog to be called THE balrog, not even Gothmog. Even the last known surviving one in Moria is called A balrog of Morgoth, not THE balrog of Morgoth.
    14. THE Morgoth? /sigh
As far as the actual rankings are concerned, you give no clear definition of what you mean by "powerful". Did you mean the overall strength of their spirit? Their physical strength? Their fighting ability? Their ability to throw magic/ elements? Their ability and knowledge to create? Their desire to impose their will on others? The charts would vary by each classification, so it is a muddy concept. I would assume that you mean either the overall strength of their spirit or their willingness to use/show/display power but for ease, I am going to refer to their overall strength of spirit. Also, this is also referring to inside Ea because the power of the Ainur is greater outside of Ea than inside it.
    "Rankings"
    1. Eru
    Duh!
    2. Melkor
The strongest of the Ainur and it's not even close
    3. Ungoliant
Most likely a creature of Melkor's darkening of the music of the ainur that came into Middle Earth from the Void. Probably originally somewhere between a Vala and a Maia in strength before feasting on the trees and drinking the Wells of Varda which had a power boosting effect like an Ainur taking control of Sauron's ring would.
    4. Manwe and Varda
the most powerful of the Valar
    5. Rest of the Valar
all are more powerful than the Maiar else they would have been Maiar.
    6. Sauron/ Mairon
already one of the stronger Maiar but was also strengthened by Melkor.
    7. Rest of the Maiar/ Balrogs (corrupted Maiar)
the "lesser" Ainur but still had a hand in the creation of Arda so still strong enough not to be trifled with.
    8. Tom Bombadil
is most likely some avatar or manifestation of a part of Arda, most likely the land itself, his power is still bound to Arda. The ring not working on him isn't surprising, what does the land care about a spirit's power? He does have great power yet limits at the same time. Do not confuse the woods where he lives as his domain, his domain is all Arda, he just settled in those particular woods because of Goldberry.
    9. Gandalf (the Istari)
A Maia in an even more limited form (don't forget, the Valar and Maiar are already weakened just by entering EA). Still more powerful than any Elf as Grey or White. I'm putting Tom ahead of the Istari because he probably is more powerful as long as they are limited and it's in Arda....but it's close since Tolkien intentionally left him as such a wildcard
    10. Galadriel
As great and powerful as she is, she still isn't an Ainur. There is a reason that Elves generally defer to the Istari.

I do not agree on the ranking, the thing that in my opinion makes less sense is Toma Bombadil above Varda and Manwe: not much is known about his power but it is confirmed that during the company of the ring he was among the three most powerful of the middle earth (Bombadil, Sauron, Saruman), being probably the most powerful, but in the Return of the King Sauron he strengthens himself and also Gandalf resurrecting as the white, in fact he says that the only creature more dangerous than him in the earth middle is Sauron, and if that's not enough Tolkien himself said that the only being in middle-earth at the end of the third was able to fight 1v1 against Sauron is Gandalf the white therefore Bombadil< Gandalf the white

Hobbits deserves an honorable mention because they were able to overcome the evil of the ring while having literally zero power. I know nothing in TA was as powerful as previous ages but those hobbits sure saved the day

this list is just BS. Maiar is the plural of maia, valar is the plural of vala. You saying maiar's and valar's (and primorial instead of primordial) is just the top layer of the lack of effort put into this.

How gandalf weaker than galadriel? Gandalf is an maiar and his powers limited by aule for arda. Galadriel is so strong yes but gandalf is on another level. Also, where is the glorfindel? lastly, manwe and melkor have same power levels. it written on first chapter of sillmarilon. btw gothmog is not a maiar. annnddd where is ancalagon???

    • @SLMADE
      @SLMADE  Před rokem +1

In absolute terms, Gandalf is certainly more powerful than Galadriel.
However, Gandalf is also expressly forbidden by the Valar from using his power directly against Sauron. Throughout the books he rarely uses his powers. Galadriel on the other hand has no such limitations. She has clearly been using the power of her Ring. She has also been in Middle-Earth longer than Gandalf. Thus she is probably wiser than Gandalf and this is one of the reasons why we have put Galadriel over gandalf..
