I had the honor and pleasure to study this quartet with Mr Dubinski at IU School of Music back in the nineties. What a great musician he was. I still recall rehearsals under his supervision.

Borodin was a Doctor who turn turned to research organic chemistry successfully yet had this musical creativity he was a member of the mighty handful who eschewed formal music education taking as their inspiration Russian folk songs and tales. Rimsky -Korsakov left an autobiography My Musical Life describing this and much more . BTW he was a liberal in his thinking championed women in medicine. He often went to conferences on the latest developments in this field. Sometimes these were in Paris and he would look up Liszt and play over his compositions one such being In the Steppes Of Central Asia . PS forgot that he was posthumously awarded a TONY for his contributions to the musical Kismet . Forrest and wright took his music added lyrics and fully credited Borodin for the music.

No better versions available than the old Borodin quartet! There is a recording of Kopelman quartet (Kopelman being the ex 1st violin of Borodin q as well) in CZcams, that's excellent too. Other versions are simply not to listen after these performances, they are inferior. Valentin Berlinsky, my favorite!
