It looks like they're trying to evade a predator. You can just see a dot that's darting around in between the groups (near the center of the screen @ 1:16) ... it may be a hawk or other bird of prey.
Question - are these phenoms predictable? i.e. is it on a schedule? I ask because people have lawn chairs pulled up as though they were about to watch fireworks
From what I’ve seen, the take flight right at sundown, so for the past several days they have been predictable. It was the same when they were here, in the same spot, in 2007. - Alan
@@marinij Thanks. The last time I remember seeing these is almost 10 years ago, near the marsh behind Costco. Perhaps I just don't out enough but it was a real treat - although drivers on the 101 were being really careless and I'm amazed there wasn't an accident as a result of all the people with their phones out whilst driving.

Hi do you mind sharing which parking lot this is? We'd like to try and catch it tomorrow!
I think it was by chase bank
Hi Martin, it’s at Northgate Mall, the parking lot by the former Sears building facing Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

@@user-kr4jl6en7r The show was on tonight from a little after 5 to a little after 5:30pm. Extraordinary!
@@marinij I saw this several years ago near the Marin Civic Center. Startling starlings.
