    The band here has four trumpets and three trombones but trumpeter Roy Eldridge is not yet in the band, and, if my eyes do not deceive me, Anita O'Day isn't either, while saxist Sam Donahue is no longer in the band, so this is late 1940 or early 1941. The trumpet soloist must be Shorty Sherock, and the Artie Shaw-like clarinetist is in all probability Sam Musiker, one of the mainstays of the Krupa band.

      Yes, the clarinetist is Sam Musiker, swing and klezmer musician...

      Oh I though Sam Donahue was still in the band during that time. But yes, this came out in the short film called America's Ace Drummer Man that cam out in 1940

    I think the best comment I ever read about this video was : "I wish my face was as hot as this song." Always makes me laugh.

      @spercoco Před 7 lety +3

      I heard Popeye himself was a little high during the making of some of those cartoons. He used to forget his lines a lot but the producers of the show didn't want to say anything in fear that he would down a can of spinach and kick their arses.

    Aren't those Wartime drums? Looks like lugs fashioned from wood rather than metal.

      Nah, it may look like it due to how low res the video is, but these are chrome Slingerland streamline lugs.

      That is most definitely NOT Ziggy Ellman, as someone has said. I know what he looked like. If you want to see Ziggy playing, go on CZcams, and click on, " Hawaiian War Chant," by TD, and you will see Buddy, and Ellman. I would still like to know who was the trumpet soloist.

    • @earleschecter1043
      @earleschecter1043 Před 6 lety +1

      Ziggy didn't wear glasses, as this fellow does. Ten years later, in, " The Benny Goodman Story," Ziggy wore glasses, and really couldn't play anymore. In fact, he was shown in that movie playing a solo, but, it was really Manny Klein playing the trumpet.

    • @Joshster-si6ov

      Earle Schecter Ziggy Elman did wear glasses. In fact, if you watch some of the Tommy Dorsey orchestra playing in some Warner Bros. and MGM movies (Like Dubarry Was A Lady, Girl Crazy, Ship Ahoy, etc.), you see Ziggy wearing glasses.
