Transnistria: An autonomous Russian province within Moldova

Officially the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, this region -- almost as big as Connecticut -- was annexed by the USSR in 1940, and remains under military occupation by Russia. Most of the 360,000 people who live here today speak Russian.
