  • Today we look at the BMW R1250R. I have ridden a total of 1,600 km over 5 weeks on three different bikes: BMW R1250R HP, Sport and the Exclusive. I will share what I think about this amazing motorbike and the incredible BMW 1250 motor. We will discuss the positives and negatives and talk about the 6 different seats that I tested and the accessories I bought and tried from the company Wunderlich. The BMW R1250R is quite possibly the most underrated motorbike from the last 3 years.
This episode is the start of a new series that will run parallel to my Multistrada series. I hope to review and test all the models in the BMW R series line-up, the R, RS, RT, GS and GSA, and share my thoughts.
If you would like to know more about RikkyTang! and his experience moving from a BMW S1000R to the BMW R1250R, and look at the accessories he has installed and his visits to the race track…then please click on the following link: Rikky Tang: / rikkytang

As an owner of a ‘20 R1250R for two years, I’d like to correct one point: On the down-gear movement of the quick shifter, the throttle should be closed, not kept at high rpms as stated. Going *up*, however, the revs should be high to ensure a smooth shift.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  Před 2 lety +4

Hello and good morning, Yes you are correct. What I really intended to share was... when using the down shift blipper to start the down shifting process high in the rpm range and with a closed throttle.
What I experienced was, that if I start going down through the gearbox from 6k rpm.... it's much smoother than starting at say 4k rpm.
So in other words... to start using the down shifter sooner... higher in the rpm range.
      With the throttle closed.
Thankyou for highlighting that, I'll make sure next time I explain things more clearly. Best wishes Carl

Thank you for your honest review. I have this bike. There are standard issue BMW cylinder protection bars, which I think is a must, even to protect against banging a 'pot' when manoeuvring. I once dropped my bike on my driveway, when my foot slipped on leaves. The bike rested on the bars (not the pot) and literally, not a scratch on the bike. Moreover, to my surprise, it was not too difficult to lift to vertical again, by myself to boot. An asset of a low centre of gravity. And yes it is a great bike to ride. I bought one with some inheritance money, and I test rode quite a few as well.

Hello Kleithap, the reason why I'm thinking of changing is, if I want to retain the value of the Multi I need to keep the Ducati service history going... and the next service will be the big one again in about 8k km time which is probably going to be this year. The big service I can easily do myself but if I want to keep the Ducati service history it will cost around 1000€ . So I'm looking at other bikes. Possibly a 2017 pikes peak or maybe another brand. I have just subscribed to your channel. You have a reassuring, honest, style reminiscent of BBC1 in the 1970s….I hope you see this as a compliment! As a recent purchaser (Nov 2022) of the latest R1250RT, I’m interested in your thoughts on the other R1250 bikes. I opted for an RT over the GSA, due to commuting 320km, 3 days per week for a total of 960km per week. It was the weather protection (and the “newer” electronics) which swayed the decision. The GSA has fantastic suspension travel which is great for the poor state of UK roads (outside of London (where I commute to)). The RT has 120/136mm travel front/rear. The GSA has a whopping 210/220mm travel front/rear. Yet, over some pretty crappy roads in Northamptonshire, the RT rides really well, much better than my Merc’s electronic suspension, at least!
I didn’t look at the R, simply because of weather protection. I do like the look of the RnineTs but that’s if I ever move back to Central London and needed a city bike. The one thing you forgot to mention, which I found out on the return journey of my commute, is…..Dynamic mode! My God, what a difference in the engine characteristics and the sound (and suspension). I’ve been in Eco mode for the bulk of 3000km I’ve done so far, mainly due to economy and partly due to filthy road conditions, but one night when I was low on fuel and nearing home, I switched modes. My RT changed from being a cuddly teddy bear into a ferocious fire breathing animal with a tremendous roar! I can’t wait for the dry weather!

I am in the market for a motorcycle purchase, and watching all the reviews, I am left with the questions, how different is owning R1250R vs S1000R. Putting a good windscreen and a handle bar riser in s1000r, idk could it be a decent city as well as short touring bike? Why would anybody purchase R1250R? given other options specific to usage …. Either GS or 1000R covering either end of the spectrum.

If I could have made the R fit me... I would have it now. Honestly I would. The engine is the star in that bike. But...ultimately it didn't work out for me and now I'm rather happy with the GS. With a couple of changes it might be better too. More to follow in the series.

@@justthewayitis thank you for your reply, Carl. From what I learnt, the 1000R and the GS have good value retention compared to the R1250R, seemingly the R1250R is not very popular with buyers in Canada. I love the GS, but it looks outlandishly huge pottering around in the city, and the stock S1000R is a jack of all trades and excellent in none, though it still seems a more sane choice for a weekend rider like me. I don’t prefer the design language of KTMs.
I wish you can get your hands on the triumph tiger 1200 GT pro, for a review, it is a tall bike for sure but doesn’t look nearly as bulky like the GS for city usage.
I love the Multistrada V4S but the gas mileage is unconscionably poor for me, given the current times.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  Před 2 lety +1

Some nice thoughts and observations from you, so... You have mentioned a couple of things that I have not talked openly about on the channel.... One of which is resale value, this was a part of my decision to go GS and not V4S... Only part... but an important part. The second part was my current multistrada does 54mpg... Just about every month, no matter how hard or gentle I ride it which is really quite impressive. The new V4S is terrible 36 to 42 from feedback from real owners I know here locally, plus it's heavier and has less low down punch than my 2013. (And yes I've been out on the V4 twice now.) Also, I can keep the GS for 2/3 years and it will lose less value than the V4 would. These are important factors.
The S1000RR I rode last month was simply great, but I can't comment on the 1000R because I have not riden it, but it does not have ShiftCam so its going to be possibly much much weaker in the midrange than the 1250R or GS.
So my thoughts... For what its worth are as follows. IF... you have access to open fast roads where you can easily build speed and open her up and use the rev range... Then maybe the 1000R might work for you.
The 1250R will catapult you out of every corner regardless of speed, and would be more usable and more fun If the roads are more restricted.
The GS will give you that, plus the comfort, plus the ability to tour, plus passenger capability.
Last thought.... Smile. Multistrada V2S..... This might work for you if your really looking for sporty ability, good running costs, and beautiful to look at and ride.
Try to find time to go and road test as many as you can... Dealers are really happy to let you try the bikes and you will enjoy it too. Let me know what you buy, best wishes Carl

Really helpful insight - Thank you Carl! I've been looking at this bike for almost a year now and I'm almost about to pull the trigger. I'm coming from a Triumph Street Triple 675R and was aiming at the R1250R because I'm looking for a more versatile naked bike. I want something really comfortable with touring capability and the R1250R seems to tick all the boxes - Your feedback on the position on the bike is really interesting : What bother you exactly? Was it the weigh on your wrist? Your back position? The knees angles? Haw tall are you if I may ask?
I'm also wondering a lot about how efficient the wind protection can be with a proper touring screen - My last long trip on the highway almost got me deft and I really hope the R1250R with a proper touring screen for the long trip will be able to help!

Hello Francis and welcome to the channel and thank you for your positive feedback. The R1250R is a beautifully built bike and it handles incredibly well for its weight, which seems to vanish once your on the move. The engine offers amazing performance and the torque is available everywhere in the rev range. Ultimately I just could not get comfortable on the seat and after 90 mins I was glad to get off. I'm 6ft tall 1.84m and 90kg. I did try several different seats (see video) perhaps with more time I might have found one that works for me... but I ran out of time with the bike.
The bmw short screen was good and I think with something like a wunderlich touring screen you would be able to tour in comfort. If you follow the channel you will see that in the end I moved to the GS because of the comfort levels for touring.... but... smile... the R is much better in the curves and bends and probably better in the city and as a commute bike.

    Hi Carl,
I think it was in this video that I saw this, but it might have been another one. Doesn't really matter.
You said that if you brake in a corner with your multistrada the bike "stands up and runs wide".
I have a '13 multi, and I trail brake into every corner. I have lost count of how many times I have had to brake hard in the middle of a fast sweeping corner.
The bike has never changed line on me, not even the tiniest bit - always brakes exactly on line, without me having to think about it.
I also have a 750 honda, which although not as stable as the ducati certainly doesn't have a problem braking in corners. I have used corner braking with a number of other bikes too.
If your multistrada is really doing this, there must be something terribly wrong. There is no way it should change line.

I can only share my recent experience with the 2022 GS which over the first three weeks impressed me with regards to the difference between normal ABS and ABS pro... which is very noticeable. I previously never thought my multistrada was missing anything in the brakes department...But now I know things have moved on and improved. Best wishes Carl

a good assessment of the bike but I am still confused why you could not get comfortable - you didn't say your height for starters? I have the Sport version or HP (at its introduction it was always called the sport in the UK but came with the HP decals) and find the bike very comfy and i have come from an RT! I have never heard of anyone having issues with the lean angle or scraping the cylinder heads and rather than describing that as 'sporty' I would suggest thats at the racing/track end of things - but its a road bike?!! Anyway, enjoyed the review.

Hi David, thank you for the compliment, and yes I forgot to add my sizes (6ft / 1.83M tall 14 stone / 90 kg) I did give all these at the start of the Multistrada series but my mistake for not adding them for BMW viewers. It was the pegs that for me touch down to easily (not cylinder heads) and this is more to do with our roads here in Germany... no hedges.. so you can see much much further ahead when you reach your favourite curves/bends, and as a result corner speed is that little bit faster than I ever dared do back at home in the UK. I'm not the only one to mention this... other viewers on my channel have commented on it too. If your interested in a video about this let me know and I will post a link... it's in German but the guy actually measures the gap between the pegs touching down and how close the cylinders get to the road. The R1250R is brilliant and if I could have got comfortable their would be one in my garage... smile. I wanted to order and try the Sargent seat from the UK but I couldn't get one in time for the test... as I only had 4 weeks. This Thursday I will upload the start of a new series about the R1250GS which I've been lucky to get for a couple of months. Best wishes and thank you for leaving a comment. Carl

Hi. Were the Wunderlich seats noticeably more comfortable than the standard 82 cm seat? I'm thinking of buying the Wunderlich passenger seat to prevent my girlfriend from sliding forward, but I might also buy the rider seat if it's more comfortable.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  Před 2 lety +1

Hi, sadly I didn't find either of the two seats I tried comfortable (Standard and High ) but I struggle to find seats that work me. They might work great for you. They definitely stopped the sliding forward though and the build quality is excellent. Wunderlich have a 60 day "try and test" policy at least here in Germany so perhaps check that first. Not sure of your location. UK ?. If they do I would order and test them as returns are free. They look great on the bike too. Carl

@@justthewayitis Thank you for your feedback, I'm in the Netherlands. I think I'll first try the Triboseat cover to prevent the sliding forward, it's cheap. I'll eventually invest in the Wunderlich seats for more comfort later, but I don't have any comfort problems with the stock rider seat so far. I haven't ridden the bike for more than 2.5 hours yet though.

I currently have the 840mm seat and it's horrible for me(186cm) - pushing me on the tank just when I release the throttle, not to mention when I'm breaking.
Is the 820mm seat any better?
I went to the dealer and sat on one and it felt better right from the start, but didn't do any riding....so don't know is that just wishfull thinking :)

Hello Tom and welcome to the channel, the R1250R is a lovely bike, and if I could have found a seat that worked for me... I would have one right now... a brilliant bike.
Yes the 840 was the least comfortable seat, and like you say its horrible.
The 820 is much better and a completely different shape and stops the movement forward when you release the throttle. I hope you find a seat that works for you, and please let me know which seat you finally end up with.
      Many thanks Carl

I am brand new to your channel having got a suggestion for other video(s) titled Dynamic ESA explained etc.
I currently ride a (very analogue) Honda Hornet 600.
I have been considering a used R1200RS Sport SE
I am aware the R1250 engines have superior shiftcam tech.
I would quite like "Cornering ABS" on my next bike.
I have read some conflicting comments re whether the R1200RS had "Cornering ABS".
Some state that all R1200RS sport spec (& above) models come with "Cornering ABS" ...others have suggested this feature was only available after 2017 MY.
My research suggests that the only definitive way to know if prssent(when not with the bike) is to use VIN checker to look for "Rider Mode Pro " on spec sheet(s).
Do you have any knowledge of year changes re this.
I have spent hours trawling forums, reviews & watching vids for info.
.......It amazes me so many reviewers (including pro journalists) seem to show little understanding of the complexities of rider aids. Some don't even mention the prescemce of 5 or 6 lebel IMU 's present on certain bikes.
I am aware I can try to ask BMW albeit I suspect I may struggle for a proper answer on anything other than an enquiry on a specific used bike.
An answer or simlple point in right direction would be great. RIcky Tamg maybe ???
Sorry for the essay....just keen to be clear.
Your videos are absolutely spot on ...I have read books on sag set up but your explanation very clear yet informative.
Your general comments re seat heights and riders fitting bikes are again spot on. (No point buying fancy shoes if our feet don't fit them 😉)
    Thanks & Ride Safe 🏍👍

Hi AW8, welcome to the channel. ABS PRO is what you are looking for. Cornering ABS came in on different models in different years in different markets in different specification bike. So the first thing to look for is a mention of ABS PRO , then you need to give the chassis number to a BMW to confirm. There are several chassis number checking apps available and you will find these through your local R1200RS forum which I would highly recommend you join.
      Best wishes Carl
