- We talk to Mikey Way about his love for The Smashing Pumpkins, from attending shows as a teenager with his brother Gerard to how their music influenced his work in My Chemical Romance and Electric Century. Mikey picks his favourite albums, including 'Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness' and 'Adore', and tells us how the MCR song 'Summertime' was written as a "high five" to the band. he genuinely understands the love and infatuation from a fan’s perspective and surely that must have something to do with how my chem are so successful...sleeping outside venues, adoring the theatrical live performances, getting autographs, he’s done everything that his own fan base do, I feel really seen lol
I could go on and on about him, but MAN... I love Mikey so so so much. I have never related so much to a person in my life before him.

I always thought Summertime was a nod to the pumpkins. Cool to see it's true.
I discovered them during the Mellon Collie release, and of course Today was still in heavy rotation on MTV at the time, so like late ‘95. Both those albums are tied to some really wonderful memories. It sounds corny to say it but, a simpler time in my life. They’ll always be very close to my heart. And they are still, and probably always will be my favorite band.

I'm about a month younger than Mikey. Rocket was the first song that made me want to listen to over and over since Disarm and Today, which I love now, were just played too much on MTV and radio for me. BWBW is the one that really got me into them, though. Perfect song at the perfect angsty 9th grade time when I can't get along with family or classmates. I really was a rat in a cage.
The last time ever went to the old Capital Centre, I saw their show. Then their (temp) keyboardist ODd on the way to their NYC show. Unfortunately they fired their excellent Jimmy Chamberlin as a response. (But he has been back in the band for a while).
Will check out CR for once in my life. Signing off from The Pixies/Slayer nation, Matt. (Always heard your bands name, but am 47 and have been out of the loop for a while. Cool...you were a fan on that tour too..virtual beer toast!!)

The smashing pumpkins/garbage tour was my first real concert and the today video was the first time they captivated me. I remember seeing it and being like "that Asian chick is kinda hot". I also saw them when fountains of wayne opened and when they played by themselves for machina's sacred and profane tour. I also saw zwan and one of their zeitgeist residency shows.
Zwan, and also the music that came out of the residency is some of Billy’s most under appreciated work.
The Pumpkins and Garbage - my 2 favorite bands (actually in reverse order lol). Man would that have been something to see, wish I was alive then (21 haha). Not really an MCR fan but I used to like some of their stuff and enjoyed this clip.
