Brutal Weather Mountain Camping on Glyder Fawr | Gale Force Wind, Heavy Rain & Hail! MSR Hubba NX

- I made my way up the Devils Kitchen from Llyn Idwal in beautiful weather, although there had been so much rain in the days before that the route had turned into mini waterfalls in places! This route up is a really fun scramble, but the slipperiness made it precarious
I made camp up at 700m on Glyder Fawr, close to Llyn y Cwn. I saw the stars & milky way before the weather turned. The winds actually got over 60mph gale-force gusts, although I didn’t know this at the time. I was sheltered by the rock buttress behind my tent at camp, but you can see how my tent still takes a battering. Without the shelter of the rock buttress it would have been pretty hairy indeed and may have been a pole-breaker
The next morning I made my way up to the 1000m summit in the crazy wind, rain & hail. The last 300m is a gentle ascent so there's nothing to get blown off of. Unsurprisingly I had the mountain to myself and didn’t see another person until I’d descended back down to Llyn Idwal. The weather continued to worsen as I made my way back to my car
Apart from the unfortunate wrecking of my filming gear again, I loved this lil trip and I’m super excited for more wintery weather & scenery :D

Whenever I feel negative and gloomy I watch one of Claire's vids to snap me out of it. Her positiveness and optimism are an inspiration.
I love watching Claire’s videos when it’s too hot to do anything. Adventures by proxy 😊
I agree it has personality and real. Unlike ame in a van that relies on her charm and glamour to gain views as much as she's lovely it gets but samey and not real id imagine her in air b and bs the rest of time not filming
Well done Claire for achieving the summit in atrocious weather. Was worried about you descending on those slippery rocks, especially holding a camera in your hand. Don’t worry about getting footage, Safety first yeah? Much love
Heyy thanks :) anything sketchy is filmed on the go pro, which is hands free attached to my rucksack, no need to worry about me :)
My god that's some serious guts and tenacity there Claire. Shame about the lost footage but you've still crafted a beautifull video out of what you still captured, thoroughly enjoyable!
The glyders were the same twelve years ago, I need to get back after seeing your videos, the weather is so much better than the pennines 😂😂, a little tip, carry some form of cordage, I use old faithful 550 para cord, £15 for 30 metres, that's 550 pounds breaking strain, you can lower your kit instead of carrying it down dodgy slopes, just a tip from an old guy who was once like you, ❤❤.
Stay safe out there Claire.
Nige 👍👍☕☕
Great video. I love laying in a tent, listening to the rain.
i think you may be some sort of rain goddess, jeepers the weather you go camping in!
You certainly have balls climbing up that slippery slope.. you have earned my utmost respect. You are one amazing lady.
I don't think it's slippery there tbh, not sure why she's going up the waterfall parts which are dangerous when there's no need.
It’s such fun to watch your evolution into quite the respectable hillwalker. I can’t imagine why you had the mountain to yourself in hail, gale-force winds, and rain. 😜 Love the thrilled smiles, though, as you pressed on and endured!
Ahh thanks :D I have loads of fun up there hehe. First summit with no one else present this one I think! Yep I can't think why😄 Thank you for watching, and have a lovely eve :) Claire
Hi Claire, steep climb up Devils kitchen and up, slippery when wet, 🤣opens up on to Y Garn to the right and Glyder fawr to the left, castell y gwynt ( makes whistling noises on a windy day) and on towards Glyder fach, then keep going to the scree path down to Tryfan, love it up there, hope you enjoyed it, one of my fav climbs 🤗🤗🤗♥️👍🏽
Why would two people give this inspirational video the thumbs down, strange... Keep 'em coming WILDBEARE..
Probably because of jeaulosy pal.
Good to see the sense of adventure still lives worldwide, you definitely are brave for being in those windy conditions with very little cover. And your nightsky photos are fantastic! Thanks for sharing..
You are an amazing inspiration to me, an incredible happy joyous human, we could all learn a hell of a lot about how to keep smiling through this challenging thing called life. I wish you nothing but happiness. Thank you so much for these wonderful dream like vids, love the music too. Bye. Si, in Bristol x Aloha
Breath of fresh air, what a precious soul you are Claire.
Great video Claire. A great example of how beautiful and brutal the Welsh wilderness is!
I attempted a walk around the Great Orme in Llandudno a few years back. A easy walk along tarmac of 6 miles, until the wind whipped up to near 80mph gusts which nearly put me over the wall between me and a drop into the Irish sea!
Your tenacity is infectious, that weather would have had most of us calling for back up and you even manage to get those class night photo's.
Aw thanks, I enjoy a bit of bad weather, bad visibility puts me on edge more than wind & rain. I was sooo glad to get those night sky photos! I lost the evening camera footage when it broke but it recorded the star images 😍 thanks for watching :)
Holy Moley! What a trooper! Thanks for braving the weather and terrain to bring us some breathtaking views! The colors were amazing and the night sky with Milky Way divine! Wow.
Hi Claire. There is a far less challenging route up through devils kitchen. That looked proper sketchy. Very brave to do that with a pack on. Was up there a few weeks back with poor conditions, and it's no joke. That said, i i still loved it. Ogwen valley is my happy place
Heyy Rich, this is the route up Devils Kitchen, I was using map compass and following the route along on view ranger too. I think maybe because there's so much water at the moment, it looks different because a lot of the 'path' is running water. Glad you like it, it's a beautiful place isn't it. Stunning here in the snow ❄
Hi Claire - There is an easier route up - if you look on the OS map it is the other path shown - you cross a wall/stile on the way up and won’t encounter so much water / sketchyness as you did. The path is clearly shown on strava. 👍
@@dylanwynroberts ahh the other path that goes up and around the top rather than straight up to devils kitchen? I like the scrambling to be fair, chose to do this one :) although the rocks are slippery as hell at the moment
That looked gorgeous even in that weather. You can see how people get into trouble on the mountains when the weather turns like that, glad you survived intact! Great video!
Thanks Martyn :) yeh absolutely, it's nice to have all the overnight stuff, even though it's a lot heavier of course but there's very little I couldn't survive up there with it
Great wild camping filmmaking, really enjoyed Glyder Fawr’s spectacular rugged scenery and the sound of the wind, and hail storm, from inside your tent was quite something!
Being outside in the wilds of Britain is uplifting but when the elements hit and everyone else has left I feel positively alive (I also like the contrast of getting home to the warmth and a nice hot drink). Good to see another all weather person. Hope you do some winter camping. Stay safe.
Maybe that's a silly thought, but it was a good way for a camera to go. It helped you capture a ton of beautiful shots and didn't rot away on some shelve. I'd choose that! And this last shot? That so poetic.
I do have a bit silly sentimental habbit to sometimes accredit some inanimate objects with soul or smthn (not entirely seriously but still 😛) so I am totally with you on this thought 🤗
Sometimes, when I watch your videos, I have to remember to breathe!
great shots awesome location good viewing
wow Claire that looked well scary with the wind but what a Awesome adventure you had there and can't wait to see your next adventure Claire Lovely❤👍👌🙂❤
Depuis la France. Un grand merci pour vos superbes vidéos. C'est toujours un grand plaisir de les visionner. Bravo.
Claire you are a very brave girl and a great watch. 👍
Great video, just wanted to add for the benefit of anyone wanting to follow in your footsteps that Llyn Idwal itself is an SSSI so wild camping anywhere near the lake is strictly prohibited under any circumstances, you were fine and far enough away, but just for anyone else looking into camping in that area. I'm a local wild camper and fell runner, you get used to the slippery rocks and high winds over time, but for short trips like this over that terrain you'd find you have much more grip with a pair of fell running shoes, or boots-wise I find something like the Inov8 Roclite 286's give you loads more grip and confidence than traditional style boots.
What a gorgeous spot, even in bad weather - great video Claire!
You all ways have the most fantastic views. View with the stars was amazing.
Absolutely wonderful adventures. Thanks again.
Claire you are so dedicated to getting where you set out to go and are such a brave soul dealing with the weather you faced. So glad you weren't hurt when you had your tumble. The mountains and the lake were so beautiful. Take care and stay safe. Thank you for sharing this amazing trip.
Cool video Claire, I loved those night sky starry shots you took, just beautiful. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us all 😉👍🏼x
You are such an inspirational person! Keep up the great work! Thanks for sharing your great uncut real experiences with nature!
New Sub here. Enjoying the ambience of your camps. Cheers, Tony
More fun in very wet and windy conditions. Its great to be at one with nature and relying on one's own self reliance. So peacefull your videos .Great.Thankyou.
Absolutely brilliant video and pics. Stunning landscape. Good on you not letting the weather stop you forging ahead. Keep up the great work.
Absolutely stunning, beautiful! The scenery was incredible as well! For a place without trees that was incredible. What an adventure, thanks for sharing.
An insane beautiful scenery.. I'm blown away too.. thank you for sharing your wild adventure 😀
WOW!!! YOU ARE PHENOMENAL!
Yep, I can't do slippy rocks... but it's great to be able to watch your adventures.
What an awesome place to spend the night - and summits are always cool to achieve.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Hello, the weather is always bad in your country, but it is what a country, the hike is magnificent, you make me dream. Thank you for more. Bonjour , il fait toujours mauvais dans ton pays , mais c'est quel pays , la randonnée est magnifique tu me fait rêver.Merci a plus.
Claire, you are amazing! fearless! thanks for taking us on your adventures! love it!
Aw thank you Neil :) by no means fearless but I do my best. Thanks for stopping by
When my world gets crazy, I watch one of your videos. Thank you for all your cuteness and journeys !!
You are very courageous! Thank you for the ride!👍
This is really well shot and edited. It's so good that it's easy to overlook the thought, vision, skill and time involved.
Congratulations on getting through all this and thanks for the video. Amazing.
Yup, there you go again leading from the front and showing us all the way it should be done. Tenacity and grit.
You are amazing Claire, and those night shots well... WoW xx
Really great video Claire. Epic adventure & so nicely edited together. Thank you so much for sharing. 👍 Take care Mark
Excellent video. You're an inspiration to everyone to get out and enjoy nature, no matter what their level of fitness. Start with small walks and work your way up to more adventurous endeavours and never let the weather stop you, as you always feel so much better for doing it. This is from someone who's been idle for a while and started going out woodland walking every evening again. Thanks for the inspiration.
Fantastic, your an inspiration. My whole family love your adventures
Great video. Thank you.
An epic adventure & all just a few hours away from a comfy Sofa & a warm bed. Its a great feeling to come through a jaunt up a hill like that, well done.
Hello 👋 Claire, thank you for sharing another exciting adventure video. You have great perseverance out there on the trail. Please take good care of yourself. All the best to you Dear for your good health and safety. 🤗
Croeso i Gymru! Welcome to Wales, but maybe next time show some extraordinary weather!!! LOL!! Love your vids,Den, Llangyfelach (just down the road from the 'Glyders'). X
Her pronunciation of the Welsh mountains always makes me smile ☺...She pronounced Glyder as Glidder...pronounce it Gludder..also Fach as Fack..pronounce the F like V and the CH as in Loch (Ness)..Tryfan as Truvan..Despite that I still think she's awesome 👍 👌 😁 ❤🌳🌲🔥🗡️xxx
Happy Anniversary, keep doing what you love joe
Looks like fun, thanks for the video!
Absolutely awesome, Claire. Definitely one of your best videos yet if not thee best! You really captured the drama of that tricky ascent. Fabulous. Can't really think of other superlatives to add.
I had a holiday in that area a couple of years ago in rather more friendly conditions.
Take care.
Hi Frederick, aw wow thanks! So glad you like it :) It's a really fun ascent up there :D would be much easier without a giant rucksack. Such a beautiful area isn't it, I just can't get enough of Snowdonia 💚 Will have to tear myself away and explore other places at some point 😄 Have a lovely eve! Claire
@@WildBeare 👍🙂
Wow so beautiful and relaxing
Hello. I find it fantastic when a woman is traveling alone. More courage than many a man
You are very brave, this was the most exciting video!
What a trip!! I'm up there this weekend for a couple of nights wilding, weather looks considerably better, great video.
Wow, that sky... amazing 👏 lncredible and so inspiring 🙌
Wow so beautiful!
Such gorgeous terrain!
You are amazing! Much love and respect from NZ 🇳🇿
I very much like the way you always put safety first, and include it in your videos. We have the same kind of considerations on our hills and mountains down here!
I too love winter tramping and camping. Its so exhilarating! 😍🙆🏻♀️🏕️🗻🏞️
This one
Every time I watch your clips I am amazed at the beauty on view. Some of the scenery is very nice too.
Assolutamente fantastico, Claire.

Your one crazy lady and I for one ….am totally jealous I’m unable to do it, Love watching keep them coming.
OMG I didn't think that someone could be crazy, courageous, entertaining and beautiful in equal measures until I started watching your videos Claire.
I love your videos and you are a truly amazing lady and outdoors adventurer!
Cosmic Claire, you are a star, all hail, fine and hardy.Though wind doth blow ,on still you go - the summit you n'ere tardy. So from this joyous fountain these words doth freely flow " I've got myself a mountain ! "....." Now down i need to go ! " Down, down you go the battle's won,now rest in peace the ZV 1.You take us here, you take us there, your epic tales you love to share.the hills you love to roam (whilst we're at home - just glued t' flippin chair ) .....what is this life if full of care,we have no time to stand and stare ? .... cos we're all watching Wild Claire !
Well done. Your so brave . Look forward to seeing your next video.
Oh, this is fantastic. You are my kind of people!
Love the elements great fun x
Love the grit and determination. I have the same tent. It’s possible to set up and take down the inner with the rain fly, poles and ground sheet placed and secured first. It takes a little maneuvering but definitely helps keep your living area dry. Keep on with the adventures!!!
I just can't stop watching your video adventures ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊 thank you so much from a Kiwi down under
Another fantastic video Lady....stay lucky
Hello Claire. Wow what a journey you have taken us on. The weather was so bad for you yet you kept your spirits up. Thank you for sharing this with us. You have done more than i could have done there bless you. You appear never to give up and carry on like a mountain Lion. At least your alright and you must have been cold at some point.. Regards Mick.. x
You're beautiful and crazy creature, Claire! I really enjoyed this video 😊
Another great video - like that's a surprise!
'This girl can!'
Great stuff. Thank you
such a nice place, and so much water! lovely
When I go to summits like this, and I know I'll return the same way, I drop the back pack, and pick it up later. And with your orange cower, it should be easy to find it, if it is a monotonous terrain. And in winds, it really helps to get the weight balance down. But what a great spot and beautiful area. And no people around. That is the good thing about hiking out of the season.
Love your night shots of the stars! Peace. Thank you!
Very sound advice about the wind Claire. I had to bail at the foot of Bristly Ridge when I first attempted the Glyders, as you couldn't stand up braced with two trekking poles, one second it's relatively calm and in a matter of seconds it just rushes in up the valley from nowhere. At least you didn't face plant and snap a trekking pole downclimbing the Devils Kitchen like me, just another Camera this time!! The conclusion I've come to is, if you are the only one out and about the weather is trying to tell you something, well done though for getting up there and back safely and for sharing your adventure.
Wow! That was amazing, such beautiful pics.
Thanks Darren :) love north wales 💚
You are one brave lady, !!!! Well done.

Young lady is always smiling x
Love the night sky footage - epic ascend to the summit in that weather - keep doing your thing 🙏💪💪💪
That picture of the sky you took was f**king AWESOME! Brilliant. Love doing the mountains when the weather is like that. Makes it more of a challenge. Makes you feel alive!
Thank you, it was so beautiful, I was so glad to get a few photos of it before the weather came in and my camera died. Yess it certainly does doesn't it :D feels like quite an achievement when you finally make a summit in that haha. Thanks for watching :) Claire
Brilliant video !
Bellissimo posto 🙂 veramente magico ❤️
The views are absolutely stunning
10/10 for bravery and determination in those conditions. You are introducing Wales to the world.
Great scenery and camera work , thank you .
