Koh Samet, also known as Ko Samet, is a picturesque island in the Gulf of Thailand, located in the Rayong Province, about 220 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. Renowned for its pristine beaches, clear waters, and relaxed atmosphere, Koh Samet is a popular destination for both local and international tourists. Here’s a walk around the island:
Arrival and Main Pier
Upon arriving at the main pier in Ban Phe on the mainland, you'll take a ferry or speedboat to the island. You’ll disembark at Na Dan Pier, the main entry point to Koh Samet. Here, you'll find a variety of shops, cafes, and rental services for motorbikes and bicycles, which are popular ways to explore the island.
Sai Kaew Beach
A short walk from Na Dan Pier leads you to Sai Kaew Beach, the longest and most popular beach on Koh Samet. Sai Kaew is known for its soft, white sand and vibrant nightlife. The beach is lined with bars, restaurants, and resorts, offering a lively atmosphere during the day and night.
Ao Phai and Ao Tubtim
Walking south along the coast from Sai Kaew, you’ll come across Ao Phai and Ao Tubtim. These beaches are quieter than Sai Kaew, with a more relaxed vibe. Ao Phai is a great spot for swimming and sunbathing, while Ao Tubtim is known for its laid-back beach bars and cozy bungalows.
Ao Wong Duean
Continuing further south, you’ll reach Ao Wong Duean, one of the largest bays on the island. This crescent-shaped beach has a mix of budget and mid-range accommodations. The waters here are calm, making it ideal for swimming and water activities like kayaking and snorkeling.
Ao Thian (Candlelight Beach)
Ao Thian, also known as Candlelight Beach, is another tranquil spot further south. It's less developed than other beaches, offering a serene environment perfect for those looking to escape the crowds. The beach is small but charming, with clear waters and a few beachfront restaurants.
Ao Wai and Ao Kiu Na Nok
Further south, Ao Wai and Ao Kiu Na Nok are secluded beaches offering peace and quiet. These areas are less frequented by tourists, providing a more intimate experience with nature. Ao Kiu Na Nok, in particular, is known for its clear waters and coral reefs, making it a great spot for snorkeling.
Ao Karang and the Southern Tip
At the southern tip of the island is Ao Karang, a remote and picturesque bay. This area is less developed, offering a true escape from the hustle and bustle. It’s a perfect spot for those looking to enjoy nature and solitude.
Western Coast and Sunset Views
Exploring the western coast of Koh Samet, you'll find fewer beaches but spectacular sunset views. Ao Prao is the most notable beach on this side, known for its luxury resorts and stunning sunsets. It’s a great place to end your day with a relaxing evening by the sea.
Interior and Nature Trails
Koh Samet is also home to lush forests and nature trails. Walking through the interior of the island, you’ll discover scenic viewpoints and a variety of flora and fauna. The island is a designated national park, so there's plenty of natural beauty to explore.
Practical Tips
Transportation: Walking, renting a motorbike, or hiring a songthaew (shared taxi) are the main ways to get around the island.
Accommodation: There’s a range of options from budget bungalows to luxury resorts, catering to different tastes and budgets.
