  • I install a new 2000W Xantrex inverter/charger in this video into our 1976 CHB trawler boat. The new inverter replaces a 13-year-old 1800W Xantrex that has seen better days. It is also a modified sine wave, and the new one is a pure sine wave. Other features include a 100 amp charger, lithium battery charging, transfer switch, and a remote display with Bluetooth app.
    The installation was easy for me since the older inverter wiring was previously installed and suitable for the new inverter. Stay tuned for a full review once I've used it for a while.

    I have a zantrex inverter in my semi truck. It's a pure sine wave and it's absolutely amazing. It runs a 42 inch TV microwave air fryer refrigerator and the wife's hairdryer oyeah... and the coffeemaker every morning and has for a long time now

    Hey Ray..
    I've had and used continuously, a 2004 Cobra Marine 3500 watt modified sine-wave Inverter with no problems at all. I've run and charged computers, smart TVs, satellite tv boxes, cell phone chargers, DVR boxes, microwaves, portable refrigerators and many other electronic devices. I've never had any trouble in almost twenty years of service.
    Oh, I use it in my semi-truck not a boat. I've had it in two different trucks..
    So, I don't believe the myth of Modified is Bad for electronics.
    But.. I guess I could just be lucky.
    Have a good day

      To each their own, but having repaired electronics for many years as a TV & Stereo repair tech, I'd rather have a pure sine wave. Things may run with a modified, but often, it will shorten the life due to the switched mode power supplies running extra hot to filter the square waves. Heat is bad for electronics and dries out the electrolytic capacitors quicker. Also, the modified sine wave produces a lot of interference and noise on the power lines making some things hum, and pure sine are more efficient at power transfer. samlexamerica.com/differences-modified-sine-pure-sine-wave-power-inverters/ Cheers, Ray

    Thanks for sharing Ray! Like 211. If the Easy start is before this, it won't help start your A/C when off-grid.

      @LoveYourRV  Před 11 měsíci

      If a boat has a generator for running an air conditioner off-grid it will likely use the main power panel via a transfer switch before the ActiveStart. There is a spare breaker on the main panel if we ever decide we need AC but not something really needed in the Pacific Northwest.

    Summer of 2024 will be a busy one for you Ray. I know the wiring on the boat is not up to your safety, organization and neatness standards after seeing the cabinet. I’d suspect that next summer, when you have more time, it will look like the RV setup. Hope you enjoy the rest of boating season!
    Any plans for a small solar setup? Edit: I see from catching up on the other videos that the boat already has some solar.

  • @herb7877
    @herb7877 Před rokem +1

    I appreciate the schematics you show. I guess I'm old school or ??? but it helps me understand what you are doing when I can not be there to see the whole thing and trace the wiring visually. I was really shocked to see the absence of fusing off the 4 golf cart batteries. There's a lot of current being stored, and the largest fear I have in my boat, next to filling up full of water is fire. Personally, I'd never mix my starter batteries with house. I'd manually move them or have them on a separate switch. Surprised a Coast Guard Inspection didn't alert you to that one. Glad to hear you're mitigating that risk. If you are not aware, electrolysis is a big problem on boats; especially in salt water . Be sure to check your zinc (aluminum or magnesium ) plates (sacrificial anodes). They need replacing every few years.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem +1

      There are numerous sacrificial zincs on the outside of the boat and in the engine that get routinely changed. I've also discovered the boat has a Newmar 30 amp galvanic isolator installed on the incoming AC earth ground line. It was hiding high up in the main electrical cabinet. I tested it today with my multimeter and its still in working condition. Next season though I may replace it with an updated one as its pretty old.

    Thanks Ray! How many 120v outlets are you powering with the inverter? I wasn’t clear if it supplies power to all your outlets or just a few. Thank you.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před měsícem

      It can supply all the AC outlets on the boat and the fridge on AC via a sub panel on the boats AC distribution panel. Here is a simplified block diagram. www.loveyourrv.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/AC-Electrical-Block-Diagram-scaled.jpg The inverter had a built in transfer switch so when shore power is unplugged it auto switches to the inverter supplying the outlets.

    How much charge amperage can u safely push to the six volt batteries

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  Před rokem +2

      Its been a while since I've had deep cycle lead acid and it can vary between make and models but if I remember right about 15 amps per 6V golf cart battery is optimal. So in a bank of 4 about 60 amps. The max charger amperage can be set from 5 to 100 amps

    I have the 3000 watt rv model. It charges the batteries and inverts well while on shore power and off the batteries. When it is on onan 10000 kw generator the Xantrex will not let the 120 volt thru. I have called Xantrex people but their comment is if it works on shore it is not their problem. Probably a bad wave length on the generator. I was not impressed with their customer service at all. Just be warned!!!

      @@danjohnson7767 The manual says the AC shore power input must have a bonded neutral and ground. Maybe the feed from the Onan generator isn't N-G bonded but floating.
      "AC Shore Power
      A source of 120 volts AC 60Hz sine wave alternating current
      provides energy to pass power through to AC loads. This source
      is usually the utility grid (power company) or an AC generator. An
      automatic or manual AC source selector switch can be used to
      switch between the multiple sources of shore power to the
      Freedom XC PRO system.
      The AC source feeding the Freedom XC PRO must have the
      neutral conductor bonded to ground. When the inverter/charger
      passes shore power through, it will lift its internal bonding relay on
      the output and will rely on the input neutral being bonded in order to
      ensure that the power delivered to a sub panel is properly bonded.
      See AC Output Neutral Bonding on page 20 for more information
      on bonding relay operation.
      NOTE: Throughout this guide, the term “shore power” refers to AC
      input power from a utility grid, generator, or other AC source"
