Hi Tomlin .. I'm 65 years old and want to learn the blues-harp .. Your instructionals, I have found, are the easiest to follow .. Keep up your good work, bro .. There's a Father up above .. and He'll bless you, for sure .. .. 😎👌🏻
Never too late to start learning. Im 36 and Ive been using apps to learn Spanish, and I also want to learn the Harmonica, with absolutely zero music experience. I picked up a Hohner Marine Band key C from Guitar Center and surprised that their selection is very minimal, and only 2 books on harmonicas. I guess thats why its called "Guitar" Center. The blow/draw transitions are what I really need to work on and this video so far is the best on conveying the nu ka tu ka part that I was having a hard time getting.
Yeah you are the best teacher NO OFFENCE TO OTHERS....but everyone is different..and I finally caught on ,from your INSTRUCTIONS..... 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀☮️☮️☮️☮️ Love all your tips.....It all makes sense now( again no offense to others teaching); I am so happy...
Hi Tomlin! I just started to learn harmonica and wanted to ask if it is okay to also breathe through the nose while doing the "train" exercise or should I breathe only through harmonica?
Hi Tomlin, Can you make a video on how to play “Man with Constant Sorrow” on Harmonica C, please? This is a link for the song: czcams.com/video/YDDEqgmGIVg/video.html P.S. sorry I missed the name the first time as I made the request on another channel too. I am really hoping to learn this one and I will be having another request later on hehe Thanks
@@shad.almighty That is such an awesome movie. The tunes are excellent. Would love to be able to play that as well. It's like 'made for the harp'. Good choice dude. ;)
My thoughts on what I beginner needs to learn first......No.1...clean notes. No.2...bending notes.. No.3.....understanding the first and second position (major and blues scales).No.4 Learning major and blues scales. No.5 Learning the 12 bar blues chord progression.
I stated playing about 6 years ago. I play a bit and then i don't for like a year at a time. But watching this video and realizing i know those things made me think i might not be a complete beginner 😂 all jokes aside, great channel, great videos, keep it up. ✌
I was super keen 2 years ago but now feel very disappointed in myself for not persevering with my harp. I still tune into your videos obviously, but need some inspiration sadly.
Nothing sad about needing inspiration! Everyone has demotivsted phases! If you use Discord, I can recommend the harmonica Discord servers, it's a great place to pick up some motivation again and get feedback. When you were still playing harmonica, didn't you make some great memories? Wanna join the bright side :P
Dude I had the same problem honestly just don’t beat yourself up about it. I found listening to new songs and learning new licks really re inspired me . 3 years on I still have off periods ,but id say the trick is not to beat yourself up about it
Breathe in stomach out: ne ? Breathe out stomach in: nor ? 3 note chord Index finger & thumb parallel, middle finger supporting, righthand thumb at the other end fingers under all of it. Tap foot 1234 Blow note 4, draw note 4. while breathing & tapping my foot. That's really hard. I looked at your links download. Which arrow is draw & which ones blow. And that's my brain overloaded. I'm still trying to put all that together. I'm hoping 20 mins daily will be enough to be able to think this is easy by next week. I'll let you know. I signed up & instantly decided that it's to technical for me to master & have only opened & read through your emails. The mountain looked to difficult to climb. I've agreed to play Captain Pugwash theme tune at a friend's funeral. I thought that it wouldn't be to difficult. Now I'm hoping that he's not going to die anytime soon. At mine & his ages, anything is possible. I really need to get into a routine of daily practice. I'm still shocked at how much I've got to think on to get a train noise. I'm glad you are such a methodical meticulous teacher. That gives me hope that what I learn will be stop on correct. Thank you
Hi tomlin , I'm possibly thinking of expanding to a chromatic but I hold my diatonic with my left. Should I go for a 12 hole chromatic with a slide which can be swapped for a left handed player or a 16 hole chromatic ( I'm possibly thinking about an extra octave ) without a swappable slide for a left handed player?
OK everybody. Here is how to learn . 1- you DO NOT need to listen to videos. That is the MOST IMPORTANT first step . NEXT: Listen to whoever you enjoy. John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, Sonny Boy Williamson ( the second) his real name Rice Miller ). . And whoever you enjoy, there are millions. Then understand that whatever key the song is in, you cross harp, which means: If the song is in A , you use a D harmonica. . And on and on . Ok, then, just try and imitate what you are hearing and before you know it , you will be able to do play lick for lick and then make it your own . . It will happen . . All by itself . . Good luck mates.
Although this is a great tutorial, seems to me that there are five even more important lessons for a blues harmonica aspirant. 1) Everytime you wake up in the morning; find outbyour baby done gone. 2) Allow a mule to kick in the stall of your happy home. 3) If your friend comes from Mexico at you, don't follow your right mind. 4) Allow the thrill to go when your baby does you wrong 5) Get a black cat bone and a mojo. If you diligently practice all these things every day, you'll be an expert in the blues.
I am surprised you are promoting lip pursing rather than full embouchure for holding the harmonica in your mouth to get single notes. If a student uses lip pursing to start, they will have to unlearn it later.

Instructor Tomlin: “number 1, breathe naturally”
Also instructor Tomlin: “breathe totally unnaturally, until it becomes natural “ 😂😂

Looking for bending notes.. to create the Wah...
35 and just began my harmonica journey as well good luck
I learnt Pt.2 after more than 20 years of playing the harmonica. I used my hands in the opposite direction but cupped holes 1 - 7 only.
Playing since 55 years holding the harmonica with my right hand. I'm right handed too.

It's also kind of baddass when a skinny white dude can bust that out. I sir, am also a somewhat skinny, white male. I need this in my life

Some of the greats lip purse.
Full embochure what do you mean by that? I understood there are on lip pursing and tongue blocking?
