Fun fact: the brakes on these race trucks generally are water cooled. As in: they spray water onto the brake disk during braking, because they would overheat otherwise.
I've been told that those systems can be the Achilles heal sometimes in that racing, especially in warm climates. Glad I'm not driving anything like that!🤣👍
it's not only water cuz if u put water on it the brakes would be damaged. its a mix out of water with additives to avoid that ;)
Regarding hill climb, don't forget it's Goodwood Festival of Speed, this very weekend.
Can be streamed all day long on CZcams, Thursday through Sunday.
Probably one of the top events in the world (along with Pike's Peak). VERY British and great fun. Sadly missing it for the first time in many years as it clashes with a Scout hike my daughter is doing. And yes, that is more important :P
I don't think that would fit past the Cheese Grater (if you know, you know)
I can't wait for FoS. I would very much like to go there sometime. Variety of cars there is just astonishing.
Should check out British/ European truck racing
Yup, and the American truck racing.
There's a thing over there, where they drag race fully loaded - 120 000lbs or ~55 metric tonnes - truck and trailer combo's over a short distance! The chassis' torque so much they can be carring the left front a foot off the ground in 1st and 2nd gear.
Here's an example - czcams.com/video/sD8VPOxZU_0/video.html
It is the "Gurnigel Hill Race" in Switzerland. Held every year since 1910. It starts at 'Rüti bei Riggisberg' (N 46°46'45" / O 7°26'40") and goes up to 'Gurnigelbad' ( N 46°45'43" / O 7°26'35").
I always thought they should be running the exhaust out of the giant cigar.
The thing he's got (you thought it was a beer bottle at first) are Krumme Zigarren (Cigars bundled in 3-4 twisted into each other from a Swiss cigar manufacturer).
As far as I know, at least in the past, there was a rule for racing trucks that they could only use standard tires (i.e. commercially available tires) and no tires made for racing. Judging by the sound, this should also be the case.
Racing trucks, seen for a while similar to the DTM (German Touring Car Championship), absolutely spectacular.
As a truck driving woman, I love it. When driving the standard unit without the trailer, it is really fast in everything. Braking with screaming tyres, From 0 to 85km/h goes really fast. Sometimes faster than some cars. That s fun!!
I've attended a truck race on the Hungaroring racetrack. When all of the trucks arrive at the same time to the first corner doing 150-180km/h... you can feel the power. Even the earth shakes a bit.
Race trucks on permanent race couses are electronically limited to 160km/h (100 mph) else they would be prone to falling over due to the weird center of gravity. Naturally this makes the racing extremely close.
@@dschoene57Mainly for safety, imagine crashing 5+ tonnes with over 160km/h
that thing got soo much torque that it doesn't wheel spin it just makes the earth rotate quicker for a few seconds lol
"Krumme" = "the bent one"
and "wold of cigars" should be self-explanatory.
thus the "cargo" probably is one such (oversized) cigar :-)
That braided triple cigar actually has an interesting history; If you work as a cigar roller at the cigar factory you were allowed three cigars for free a day. They were handed out by the factory and braided as to be identified.
Krumme or Krumme Hunde are cigars, usually several braided together when the tobacco still is wet.
And these are basically go-karts. As you can hear, they run with a locked diff, so weight transfer and power is essential.
he drives in Switzerland or Lichtenstein. Blue town signs with 50 on top.
Germany has yellow town signs and Austria has white ones with a blue border
Otherwise they are the same street signs in these countries.
In Germany and Austria the limit of 50 km/h in towns is not specifically mentioned but apply
It's in Switzerland at the Gurnigel Bergrennen (hill climb race) in 2012.
@@pikpik-rj8to I thought it must be old, today's racing trucks don't show that much black exhaust. The soot filters seem to be more effective nowadays.
Probably Switzerland. Since the 1955 Le Mans desaster track racing has been banned in Switzerland except hill climb races, which is why there are a lot of them in Switzerland.
Those are cigars "Krumme hunde" translates to "Twisted dogs". 3 cigars bundled by twisting them together.
As for the brakes, they simply dump water straight on the brakes to cool them.
So that's what they look like - they've been part of the plot of a children's book I've read ~30 years ago. 😅
5.5 Tons, Rolling to 100mph faster than a porsche, Speed limited to 100mph, Water Cooled Brakes. You should see 10-20 of these race round a track. Gets even funnier in the rain as they only use slicks.
I was lucky enough to get free tickets for a truck race here in the UK from the tyre company that supply tyres for these race trucks. The experience of seeing and hearing 15+ race trucks flying past is like nothing else!
never in my life have I hear a semi truck make a turbo flutter noise! so Weird yet so Sick!!!
Holy shit, man, this thing HAULS ASS! Not surprised, since this thing can handle 1,000 tonnes! Love it!
There is a Swiss cigar Brand named "VILLIGER",
their most famous cigar is a verginia-style cigar (3 long cigarillos briaded) called the "Original Krumme".
That is what that truck is "hauling".
This is how you get your amazon order in 30 seconds flat.....
That is so amazing to watch, utterly mental creation. Love it.
As someone else already pointed out to you, the Goodwood festival of speed is this week from Thursday until Sunday and they stream the event for free on CZcams. For someone who loves all sorts of cars like you do, Goodwood festival of speed is right down your alley. Free to watch on CZcams and you will get to see so many cars you'll be wondering about that you've never seen before. Seems like Christmas literally came early for you.
This beast doesn't drive at all - it turns its wheels and moves the earth underneath it in the desired direction.
One thing missing is the steam from the water cooling of the brakes typical of race trucks. This vehicle may be so stripped down as not to have water cooling for the brakes and for a short hill climb course get away with normal but big air cooled braking. The cab makes it look top heavy but the rear view shows the motor as low as possible between the bigger wheels.
This is in Switzerland. Near Bern/Schwarzenburg. Is also a beautiful route to drive with the motorcycle. Is near to me and drive there regularly.
If they made a remake of the old classic movie "The Duel" this truck would be the main character.
This dude not realise we have had televised truck race series for decades? This is not a one off truck, they race wheel to wheel every weekend. Its awesome
There is a race series, where these trucks are driving on racecourses like Nürburgring or Hockenheimring. It's called truck racing. You have to search for this. When you see it, you will understand, why.
Also take a look to truck trial or tractor pulling. Very interesting as well.
The way those tyres where protesting was awesome.
😃🤣 🤣👌
This turn sharp.
An ecolo nightmare but an effective move-machine.
i doubt my car would go up there as quick as that thing. what a wicked toy. it's really been a pleasure to see you enjoying finding new motor sport things like this. becoming a true "Petrol Head". keep up the good work. cheers from Down Under 😀
Twisting fresh cigars like you see on the truck comes from cuba. Very rare to see nowdays because it, has to be done by hand and don't really adds to the taste, just optics.
Villiger out of Switzerland/Germany uses this on some of their products.
A former Pikes Peak winner (Rod Millen) and family have an event in their New Zealand driveway. Usually circuit and hill climb cars but the drift boys try to show off until Dave West does a demo run and drifts around the corners that are too tight for his Freightliner race truck…. Worth a look
on the back of the MAN truck you witnessed the giant "Original Twisted Cigar" (Original krumme Zigarre) from Villiger, Swiss Cigar Manufacturer
When Optimus prime was sick at home and asked bumblebee to take his place for a day 😍
this are Cigars on the back of the truck ! and they are 3 together called: "KRUMME HUND" ! (it means : Bended Dogs )
Rodney Crick was a hero of mine as a child. His runs at Oran Park were amazing.
In Europe they do Racing on Racetracks with those Trucks. Its going down hard when 15-20 of these Race against each other. You may should look that up.
This needs to be a ringtone
The stuff on the back is called krummer hund. Its a cigar type
The thing on the back is a Culebra;
a braided cigar.
We race these on tracks against each other
We call them rolling coal as they pump so much fuel in them all you see is smoke
They had to water cool our truck brakes to keep brakes on them
Look up Aussie truck racing
Even videos on how they modifie them in truck views also truck crashes
They do find it hard for tracks to race on as when crash do alot of damage to protective walls
Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
Those Trucks are insane... i was at Nürburgring a few times at Raceweekends... when they come down the Startinglane... your hole body is shaking
When a cabover design not only looks mean..but goes like a tornado.
Oh right, the ADAC Truck Grand Prix on the Nürburgring just happened.
This video with the truck immediately reminded me of the Valtra tractor video with the title " The Fastest Tractor (Full length) New Guinness World Record"
Actual representation of my colleagues driving up the "Fernpass"
European Truck Racing is pretty "common" mostly on regular Racetracks. I think the Payload on the back ist for balancing the Weightdistribution for the Hillclimp event. in normal Truck-racing events they don't have these on the Trucks.
Lock at the Volvo Iron Knight Truck 2400 PS and 6000nM tourque. This thinkg is an absolute beast.
Haha - MAN zieht am Berg, Mercedes zieht im Führerhaus ;-)
The thing it's hauling is a type of twisted up tobacco leaves called a "Krumme" which means crooked.
On the truck lies an oversized replica of a cigar. They are called "Krumme Hunde" = "Crooked Dogs" because they are intertwined.
In answer to your question, Stopping them needs seriously big water cooled brakes and very strong leg muscles. These beasts are limited to 100mph and can do 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds! That's quicker than a 2019 Dodge Charger R/T! Under hard braking the rear end becomes lighter so the rear end bounces making the rear tyres squeal and complain on every corner. Truck racing is a really cool thing to watch. Noise, smoke and tortured tyres. What else do you need?
was a great video again. The load on the back of the Truck is a Swis made Cigar it called Die Krumme.and smals horribel. The speed of this kind of Truck is limeted at 120 mph. At the weekend of 14.07-16.7 is the Europeen Truck Grand Prix on Nuerburgrin Germany . There you can see more Race Truck´s.
Gretings the Think on the back is a Cigar deco...the Truck drives on top 160 kilometers...per hour...take a look for " Nürburgring Truck Grand Prix..."
What he has on his back are "krumme Hunde" it's just a kind of cigars.
If it wouldn't absolutely wreck the roads, hillclimb would also have a tracked vehicle category.
Might be a tow truck during the week🏴☠
Welcome to "Formula Shed". We have far, far too many old airfields to play with this shit on.
I think that thing on the back is ballast to hold the thing down and stop it spinning on the spot
Love the little effects such as 1:40 :)
So glad you're finding about what we're doing in the rest of the world 😊
The crazy thing is that this truck are elecronicly capped of at around 95 mph, but they are technical be able to run more than 125 mph. And this race trucks get only topped by the rally trucks going with mutch more than 60 mph through narrow wood paths.
A acquaintance once set the engine speed governor on his friends race truck back in the 80's. At one point on the straight at Silverstone the tachometer indicated just over 3000rpm engine speed. When they pitted they did the maths and the truck was travelling at over 110mph!!
" Villiger" > Swiss Cigares advertising on the Tail from the Truck
About to 1500 PS tuned Diesel engines...😮😊
If this truck is based on the Euro racing class it should be at least 5000 kg. Engine is moved back for better balance running twin or triple turbos hence the hp/torque.
Alloy wheels etc for weight reduction. They also would have had water jets cooling the brakes in races but I don't see steam coming from the front brakes, they likely deleted the water tanks (another 200/300kg) probably due to the lower speeds.
Regular European truck tractor units weigh around 9-10 metric tons (around 20'000 lbs). This one surely has been lightened in any possibly way. Maybe down to 8 tons (17.5k lbs). I can't think to any less than 7.5 tons (16.5k lbs).
...
P.S.
There's specific reason mentioning 7.5t - in Europe you have 2 different truck driving licence categories. One's for full time big trucks, other's for small van-type trucks (up to 7.5 tons). If you fancy, I'll elaborate.
Eurotruck racing is pretty cool, I'm a Craig Smith fanboy and race a replica of his Daimler in the tamiya rc eurotruck series👍🇬🇧
Not sure if you know, but, there are no racing tyres for trucks...they ALL run on regular road tyres the same as ordinary trucks use. And they are limited to 2600 rpm. That's in the race series anyway....This truck will have to comply with that if it races. They get it to stop Ian with water cooled brakes...Water is sprayed onto the discs(rotors) whilst braking to keep things cool. You should watch truck racing if you haven't already.
IN the 80s they raced semis in California . WE had a racer in Ventura.
I have a piston from a racing truck engine, used to use it as an ashtray when I smoked
They are even more interesting when you put them on track with loads of others, the brakes have water sprayed on them to keep them cool, you should watch the goodwood livestream the next few days
when you pay extra in delivery fee 😆
This race truck has NOTHING more in common with its streetlegal counterpart. It is, just like a Nascar, just looking like a streetlegal car/truck. Check out videos that explain these trucks in detail, you'll be amazed.
The late great Georg Plasa was the best at Hillclimb broke many records in multiple places with his Judd powered BMW,that would be great videos
This is INSANE! But .... surely this lowered MAN would look like a toy truck side by side with a Dakar Tatra Phoenix. :-D
@Cvokarium Doesn't really matter since neither of them was specifically built for hillclimbing. One is a pure track racing machine and the other an off-road racer, so apples and oranges.
Dakar had only one real beast. The DAF of Jan de Rooij. Imagine that evolution into the 90s.
Should look up the truck racing in the UK😮
" can you think of something more ridiculous ", lol yes the SLR Mclaren, its a car but sounds like a WW2 frikking Spitfire Fighter plane.
He's transporting a giant Culebra😂
Do we all ignore, that giant joint on top?
Tobacco twist. Rolls of Tobacco. Name on truck . Cigars.
Imagine that one chase you. Jesus
Like the ETRC (European Truck Racing Championship) Truck.
It‘s a cigar on the bag
1:18 OH MY GOD! Poor Greta "Tuner" 😲
Oh yeah, I love big machines. Truck racing is epic. But this is just INSANE!!! Holy crap dude, I am as excited as you! 🔥👌
Search for Scania Chimera, that thing looks also amazing. 😍
KRUMME is a well known Cigar Brand! that`s what he`s "transporting".......
Ever seen the 90s sisu racing trucks
They were speed drifting
Litterly the same stuff takumi did in initial D
But on a official race on a race track in 5500kg trucks
With multiple other trucks on track
These trucks have interresting brake cooling system, you have to watch the temperature and if they get hot, wich they do after every corner, you have to use a button to spray water directly on the brakes
I was thinking its the ultimate test the Ratchet Straps holding that load down.
Ian if you don't know already we do have truck racing over in Europe but surely you guys over in the US aswell.....
They typically boast 1100hp and around 5000 NM of torque, so I guess this one is only slightly modified
I highly encourage you to search for that on CZcams, should be easy to find :)
Edit: search for FIA ETRC..... there ya go
They do have truck racing in the US; don't know what they call that as they have the (what used to be) Craftsman truck NASCAR series but they were pickups not proper trucks. Looking on CZcams though it doesn't look like they race real trucks. :( Of all people I thought would have done, after all they race just about everything else.
@@johnbower7452They do drag racing with semi-trucks/tractors, but no circuit stuff unfortunately
I'll be at the Goodwood Festival of Speed tomorrow. All sorts of things run up the hill, bikes, cars, race cars, trucks, etc. Some try for a good time, others just want to entertain the spectators (e.g. the drifters). Do try to watch some of the highlights on CZcams.
That black cloud of unburned fuel/carbon coming out on the side of the truck makes me wonder if someone drilled a hole into the DPF...
Those trucks weigth around 5-6 ton with watercooled discbreak , are governered at 100mph in euro-truck grandprix ,without Restriktion mid go up over 200kmh. My last time being live at Nürburgring truck grandprix an man race truck raced an audi dtm-racecar .
these trucks are insane - a bunch of them and the earth is shaking 🤩
"i dont know what it is sticking up " ... dude ... in front of the truck " The World of CIGARS" ... i wonder what he could have on display .. :P
it is a "Villiger Original-Krumme" a braided cigar by the company Villiger
So that how my Amazon order comes in less than 24 hours 😂😂😂
Mercedes Benz Racing Trucks are amazing too
The cigars are called "Original Krumme" from Villiger. The cigars on the back of the truck are for marketinreasons oversized.
Meanwhile the truck don´t exist anymore. The engine (MAN 6-in line and the ZF specialgearbox) is now installed in an american schoolbus with 10 seats and gave the passengers a lot of fun.
Meanwhile I am retired and the bus is in my workshop. It was a fantastic time - thanks to all my sponsors, teammates and the people who loved my vehicles.
I enjoy it every time when he is doing testdrives with this monster around our office😳😉
