Fullmetal Alchemist is often regarded as one of the best franchises in anime. Both fans and critics agree with how high it’s rated on MAL, but in the fandom, there’s a debate that happens every now and again. Which series is better? The original anime aired back in the early 2002 and featured a largely original story that trailed off from the manga. In 2005, the series was re-released as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood that followed the manga more closely.
Now, both shows have their strength and weaknesses, and we could easily make a long and drawn out argument for both shows. However, in this video, we’ll be highlighting the main differences between the two shows. While the OG FMA has a lot going for it, there are some very significant differences and some liberties the show takes with the original source material.
    Featuring:
    Entry 1 - ED’S STATE ALCHEMIST EXAM
    Entry 2 - SCAR’S STORY
Entry 3 - THE DEATH OF MAES HUGHES
Entry 4 - THE COUNTRY OF XING
    Entry 5 - SLOTH
    Entry 6 - WRATH/PRIDE
    Entry 7 - RIZA HAWKEYE
Entry 8 - THE DOOR OF TRUTH
    Entry 9 - THE VILLAIN
    Entry 10 - THE END

While the emotional moments were undoubtably done better in FMA 2003, I just feel that Brotherhood told the story a lot better. Also, it had much cleaner animation and designs. • @Literally-Brian
      @Literally-Brian Před 5 lety +115

I completely disagree on that regard in all honesty. I do think both series have good characters, but the lighthearted nature of FMAB did hinder a lot of the character development that the characters in FMA had (mostly cuz FMA is more of a drama than an action shounen). My primary example is how Ed in FMAB keeps his ideals about not killing people throughout the entire story. meanwhile, in FMA these ideals get challenged until he is forced to cave in. FMA overall puts a lot more focus on the characters themselves than FMAB do. Although FMAB does expand on some side characters better than FMA, but never to the same extent that FMA develops any main characters.

I think Brotherhood was a better overall and well-rounded series BUT, I think there are some strong points in FMA I would have loved to seen in Brotherhood!
    1. I wish Lust's character was in Brotherhood longer. I loved her subplot.
    2. I think FMA did a better job of explaining the backstory of a homunculus (created from a failed transmutation) that Brotherhood lacked in. (Thus the amazing Lust subplot of being an Ishvalen woman in love with Scar's brother)
    3. SHAO TUCKER!!!! FMA spent so much longer building up the Nina story arc!!! So that when *it* happened I was genuinely surprised and terrified! Versus Brotherhood just spent 1 episode building the tension. The same principle I think goes for movies where you need TIME for the audience to develop a fondness and investment in the characters.
    4. I liked that FMA introduced Bradley as innocuous, and then the reveal that he is an evil homunculus was more surprising. Brotherhood, literally episodes 1 or 2 just revealed Bradley's true form.
    5. I liked Scar's tenderness in FMA. The moment that he first looks into Ed's eyes and notices he is different really stuck with me. I think that it develop's Scar's motives more than a raging killer because he's not! He's someone who was deeply hurt. Also the "creator/destroyer" part of Scar's arm in Brotherhood just seemed excessive to me.
    6. HUGHES! Same with Shao Tucker, that Brotherhood only gave us a moment to get to know Hughes before he was killed off. FMA really spent a long time developing our fondness for him. Upon analyzing the whole timeline of Brotherhood, I really think they could have killed Hughes a whole season later. He's such an important part of the storyline and what drives Mustang, I think that it would have been great for him to do more good when he was alive (and thus increase the emotional intensity of this major turning point and driving point in the whole story.)
I do think Brotherhood was better, but I think it would have truly been top tier if it spent a little more time sizzling on these important points!

This was one of the first mangas and animes I ever watched about ten years ago. I just found out ten minutes ago there's two versions of the anime and I've gotta say I'm shocked! I always thought the anime and manga were written differently on purpose entirely by the same author because they were so cool and it really tripped me out how the same characters were in it but what they said and did and how the behaved either had small differences or were way different and some characters were missing from one version. I'd always been rather impressed with that and how it made reading theanga and watching the anime both have different and original things in them. Now ten years later the two versions have merged in my mind and I can't remember which was which and many details which makes it more interesting to think about than run of the mill copied from the source animes.

No , there's one important thing that you forgot , the context , something that works in 2003 context doesn't works in brotherhood context and vice versa . For example , in 2003 context Edward had to choose if he will sacrifices the life of other human for to obtain the philosopher stone in the fifth laboratory and he refused but in the brotherhood context he didn't have to do such thing so he act differently .

@@madmouse4400 What? Human lives are still what makes a philosopher’s stone in FMAB, and Ed refuses to make one because of that, despite needing one to get his brother’s body back. True, there’s no heavy handed villain trying to force him to do it, but it’s still presented as a choice between other people’s lives and the life of his brother. In fact, FMAB puts far more emphasis on human lives producing the stones, and Ed never uses one without great consideration. Even what he gets a hold of one finally, they still don’t use it since human lives went into making it.

Because everything else remains pretty consistent between them aside from motivations and middle and end acts.
The more ugly, elitist and common alternative argument is "Are you deep and intelligent enough to understand 03?" vs "This one is canon and adheres closely to the manga, so it's automatically better." And both of those stances are objectively incorrect.

FMA is not a FAN FICTION just because it wasn't a direct adaptation of the manga from beginning to end. FMA was adapted while the manga series was still ongoing and even though she did not write the script, Arakawa-Sensei actively participated in the production of FMA. Also, she requested for a different ending for FMA as she don't want the same ending for both manga and anime. But FullMetal being a great story, it isn't a wonder that a full adaptation of the manga will be animated and thus FMAB was born. It is your personal preference which of the two adaptation you like. I, myself like FMA because it carries nostalgia of my childhood.

Personally, I would recommend watching the first 10 eps of the original FMA then go with Brotherhood up to 17 switch back to FMA then for the rest go with brotherhood. this is how I'm going to rewatch the anime see how the viewing experience is like.
I've seen both anime but I like how FMA does the first 10 eps especially the Nina eps that had much more emotional impact.
Instead of sticking to one or the other. That way you get the darkness and emotional weight of the original and still keep to the manga's canon by going to Brotherhood after episode 10.

I'd like to suggest new viewers watch the first 25 episodes of the original FMA before watching Brotherhood. Those episodes were done with far more emotional impact than they were in Brotherhood. Brotherhood sped through all those stories so we never got too attached to some of the characters.
But since the manga wasn't complete, the original had to make its own episodes; sadly it didn't quite work all the time.
Plus, you'd be missing out on some history of WHY it got such a following in the first place.
Like how Adult Swim played the second-season opener for the first 3 seasons, keeping the credits accurate to each season, thus making it the most iconic opening sequence of the entire original series. It even got a few fan-made parodies:
    czcams.com/video/l2g7g6zuIRU/video.html
    czcams.com/video/_93wh3_6fgQ/video.html
How about waiting several months in the States to catch the next manga after finding out it was postponed AGAIN (because writing and artwork for comics and manga is not an easy process)? That still makes you feel like a part of the fanbase/family.
How about how excited we were to finally see a new anime that's accurate to the manga? I saw the Japanese dub in 2009 on Funimation's channel before it came to the States translated.
SO, new viewers: watch the first 25 episodes of the original FMA before watching Brotherhood. Or watch the full FMA and Brotherhood, AND the animated movies that were released. It's all about history.
