Devdas is a multi-layered film. And can be studied in a way that Shakespeare would be studied.
Almost everything holds a symbolic meaning, from the technicalities to the acting styles, to the colors. Everything. Personally the old style of acting from the supporting cast was a bit annoying for me but it was very necessary because this is the movie that literally propelled Bollywood from the old era to the new era. I'd definitely recommend watching it, but keep in mind this is a movie that goes beyond just entertainment.

Aishwarya is phenomenal but you should really understand that Madhuri Dixit is the best at this form of classical dancing. She's the best at portraying kathak in Bollywood, her hand movements and expressions are immaculate. This song is a masterpiece but it doesn't show how great Madhuri really is, so I suggest watching her other songs like: Kahe Ched, Maar dala, Aaja Nachle, & Hamari Atariya Pe. Truly the best there is.

One of the singers is shreya ghoshal. Indian actors have no time for singing because they have to dance and act so comes the playback singers lol. They are just as famous as the actors.
And mainly they have to use autotune most of the time😂

I mean singers use auto tune but who doesn't for party songs and all, and now all over the world a little bit of auto tune is used in every songs, sometimes it's hard to notice, in most cases bollywood doesn't really use much autotune in songs which are kinda folk-fusion songs. Not talking about KAMARIYA, LOLIPOP LAGELU kinda songs though this songs need their own genre I guess. And you won't even find autotune which are supposed to represent classical music in bollywood movies.

Can you believe I'm Indian (Indian American though) and I've never seen Devdas? I am adding it to my list. I've seen Sanjay Leela Bhansali's more recent work and it is stunning. I know the songs but I stopped watching Indian films around 1998 or so, so I missed this movie.
@@BollywoodTherapy Do watch it. This film is like DDLJ , Sholay and Mother India. Every Indian just has to watch these movies at least once in life. Though Devdas might have a little bit of unrealistic kind of acting in the first half compared to other recent works of Bhansali but it was just because of the intentional choice of the director to make it look like a grand theatrical of the bygone era with story set around Kolkata of those times. And depiction of old times in films anywhere in the world is anyway a bit extra dramatic. But in this case it only adds to the beauty of the film. So... Go for it.👍 Definitely worth a watch.☺️

To be honest, I think the reason it bothers me is because I love SRK and he began his career doing such wonderful acting in his first films but by the time he got to DDLJ era (and beyond), I hated the over acting. I just saw Kuch Kuch Hota Hai because it is such an iconic film with iconic songs and people (even American Bollywood fans) told me to watch it.. and I didn't like it. I hated the way he acted when he was in college. The clothes he wore and his acting in general... But, I'm such a huge Madhuri fan and a fan of Bhansali that I will put it on my list! Actually, there are many Madhuri films I have not seen. Let me know if there are any more of hers that you would recommend. I've seen Anjaam, HAHK, Aaja Nachle, Kalank, Bucket List, Dil, all the ones with her and Salman Khan but it has been so many years since I have seen the 90s films as well.
@@BollywoodTherapy Agree on Srk's overacting in many of his films. 😊... He's just too much sometimes. Still I'll say he was way better in Devdas than in Kuch kuch....,. Plus both the lead actresses were phenomenal in this. Specially Madhuri's classical dancing and her facial expressions while dancing. She's undoubtedly the expression queen of Bollywood when it comes to dancing and deservedly so as she is a trained kathak dancer ( didn't have to mention though.. everyone knows I guess 😊) .... And in Devdas she got to show her classical dancing skills in its pure from. I can't remember if she could do that in any other film because all those were contemporary films and she had to do modern Bollywood steps. She excels in every dance form. Love to watch her dancing.

Just for ur info this song is one of the iconic dance in Indian cinema picturized on the two most beautiful women of Indian cinema.. Aishwarya and Madhuri Ji. Aishwarya was Miss World and Madhuri JI was pregnant when this dance was picturized...the Saree and jewelry they wore were very heavy... This is one of the grandest Indian dance song... The story behind this song is, Ashwariya and Madhuri are in love with the same man - Devdas. But Ash's family gets her married off to a rich landlord, whose home is the setting of this dance. Ash, consumed by her love for Devdas, cannot forget him, and even forgives his dalliances with the courtesan played by Madhuri (the more mature one). She invites her for a celebration - the Durga puja (a festival of the Goddess Kali) to her husband's home, (very progressive, and risky move!). They are singing and dancing, (Dil Dola re translates as my heart is swaying with happiness), the lyrics mean - I'm all decked up to dance and I'm so glad you're here to dance with me..they become friends. (loosely translated). The man is chewing paan - google it. He knows the identity of Madhuri, that she's a lowly courtesan and he also has an axe to grind as he has been spurned by Ashwairya, when he made moves on her. So, in the end, he tells the old granny that the woman dancing is a courtesan (she's essentially not permitted in religious celebrations), and that is where the dance ends. I have watched this movie a million times, and danced countless times on this number. Love your critique by the way.
