  • Andy Smetanka is TEDxUMontana's first artist-in-residence. He creates stop action animation using Super 8 film and cut out silhouettes. He created individual introductory slides for each speaker using his film making techniques. Here he makes a case for using old school technology.
Two-time UM graduate Andy Smetanka has lived in Montana, Minnesota, Finland and Sweden for 43 years. He has always been interested in learning new languages, particularly those of northern Europe. He has been making Super 8 movies and music videos since 2001; recent clients/collaborators include Isabella Rossellini, Guy Maddin and Pearl Jam. He lives in Missoula with his wife and three kids.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This is great. I just found my Dad's old Super 8 camera he bought in Hong Kong when he was on leave from duty during Vietnam. I can't wait to get started with it.

Where do you develop your film?

+000mrman105 If you allow me to chime in: still many labs developing Super 8mm film. Just check CZcams and Vimeo for Super8mm footage (recent uploads). The description usually includes information about film stock and the lab where the footage was developed and scanned. Just find the lab which is closest to where you are located. Used Super 8mm cameras in great condition can be found on Ebay and the likes - very inexpensively.

Probably Pro8mm in California, and that's where he's getting his digital scans too probably.

Thats' fine whe you are located in the US. In Europe I would suggest Gauge Film, UK since they have an agreement with Andec, Germany now to get top professional machine processing. Highest quality both in ECN-2 (Kodak Vision-3 color negative) E-6 (color reversal) and many B&W stocks.

Sound striped film isn't made anymore, the machines to add a sound stripe are very rare and the sound stripes themselves even rarer. Even if he were to shoot an old sound cartridge, there aren't any labs that exist now that can develop sound-striped film. That's not to say that he doesn't use sound in his movies; if you look up the originals you'll see that they all have sound/music. They don't use sound here so you can hear him speaking.
