    Any show that shies away from any/all hard discussion, disagreement, and/or debate, does a disservice to educating, inspiring, and/or encouraging audiences to think outside the box and beyond their limitations. In this show, ART is the topic, and therefore it is MORE SO critical that it practices what it preaches, otherwise runs the risk of becoming a religion full of censorship and dogma. I love and respect this show for keeping the judges and presenters discussion raw and uncensored.

    Art is so very subjective. I really feel for the judges. I think they are doing a fine job when faced with so many superb portraits, and having the weight of all the Rueben’s, Turners, Gauguins, and daVincis behind them. It’s hard to look to the future, to consider the direction a talent might go. It’s hard to consider the direction art itself might go. I commend their choices each episode even when I dislike the art. Bravo.

    Contrary to popular opinion here, I agree with the judges. I liked Maggie's portrait the best and it was my pick for the overall winner also. My preference is a portrait be more than a detailed likeness, otherwise I would settle for a photograph. Maggie's portrait gave an expression, a creative interpretation that highlights that it is indeed art.

    • @michaelmottlau5941
      @michaelmottlau5941 Před měsícem +2

      I agree with you. Maggie's portrait gave an expression, and a creativity, but I just didn't see enough of the inner likeness of the sitters personality. But that's just my personal opinion. I agree with the fact that we should embrace a new style and modern way of portraits, as well as not just choosing somebody because they make a trendy portrait.

    I love this program. I was a journalist/photo journalist for many years and I "see" the split second expression my camera would hunt and I'm always surprised when the artists work from a very still, posed setting and then surprised when they get the inner energy in there anyway. I am also surprised at how moved I am by the entire process.

    I see what the judges saw in Gabriella's work. It was also my favorite piece. It's so different, sensitive, and melancholic. I wish more people could see (or feel) what I feel. She was my favorite from the start. There's many wonderful painters, but only few of them can do something truly different (without it being wacky or too kitsch). It's not easy to find such talent.

    Serve is intense, even in repose, which the portrait does not communicate. He is edgy, with immense energy contained. The self portrait of the artist, however, is excellent.

    I like this show but have no doubt, it would have been a much better show right from the beginning, if only the judges had half the courage of Joan Bakewell. We would have seen some real head to head talent then, not this let's go for the new flavour of the month deal, pawning it off as moving forward...

    Interesting to see how the winner painted Dr.Maggie Aderin-Pocock very realistically in shades of black and white instead of her real skin tone, its a nice painting and this may not sound good but the painting would have probably been even stronger if the skin tone wasn't depicted in black and white

    I don't understand why when they have a sitter they are allowed to take a photograph.and paint from that .why not just give them a photo of a celebrity

    • @OVRQT
      @OVRQT Před měsícem +4

      You can paint with a real life sitter and still have a photograph for reference. Sometimes the sitter moves and you completely loose your angle, or maybe (like myself) you have a terrible memory and don't want to be walking up to the model every few minutes to look at their face and eyes, or maybe they have bad vision (also like myself) and can't wear glasses or contacts. Let's not be so judgemental and narrow minded about using tools to make art. The old masters would have used photography if they had it at their disposal.

    I think smartphones, tablets, etc should be banned. My A Level students were not allowed them. The only use of photography was for research not for execution of a piece. They are just copying!! Direct observation sorts the wheat from the chaff and an artist from a technician.

    • @Watkinsstudio
      @Watkinsstudio Před měsícem +5

      Smartphones and tablets have always been allowed. This a portrait competition, not art school.

    • @jekalambert9412
      @jekalambert9412 Před 26 dny

      Perhaps you should prevent your students from using manufactured art supplies so they have the experience of grinding pigments and using them to create their own paints, pastels, graphite, etc...maybe they should make their own papers too while they're at it. I'm sure this would enhance their "artistic expression".
