Au contraire... mvt 4 gave me so much life! Then again I’ve only played the tenor and bari sax parts, haven’t forayed into the clarinet parts yet

@@robertperez2262 Ah, I say this as a French Horn player! So yes, we all dreaded this movement.
But I agree, it's a very fun piece!

@@emsglaceon was gonna say: horn player? I played Horn 4 on this (or was it 2...? Regardless I didn't get to play the crazy part :( )

very relatable, i played 3rd horn and the 4th movement was like hell, but mainly because i didnt practice lmao

I always liked the second movement most. It always reminded me of busy traffic. I, the Euph soloist, played the part of a huge garbage truck recklessly shoving everyone out of the way in order to cover my enormous route in the morning rush hour. >:)

Matt Boehme Yes, both in the euphonium part and the tuba part

My first time ever hearing (and performing as well) this piece was when I was invited to play in an honor band. That was the first time I got to play music with people who actually cared what they sounded like. It was amazing and beautiful, and everything else. I actually started to tear up a bit during the concert because for the first time in my life, I was able to experience what it felt like to play with real musicians.

As the oboe soloist, I can say this piece is actually really challenging! But it's also so much fun and it's very beautiful!

so basically the first chair oboe was gone the day we sight read this and i cried bc i had to play the solos and i was using a new reed

I am a saxophonist playing this piece and I have a a few things to say. One, the fourth movement alto part is boring. Two, movement 3 is such a pretty piece. Especially all the solos in it. The 1st alto, the oboe, and the piccolo are so cool. Lastly, movement 2 is the most fun to play imo.

In order: Saint-Germain-des-Pres is the religious and cathedral district of Paris.
Pigalle: A poorer region of Paris, this is essentially the red-light district.
Pere Lachaise: One of the largest graveyards in Paris.
Les Halles: The center and marketplace district of Paris.
I think Ellerby did a masterful job of capturing these atmospheres in the piece.

I have returned to college and got the pleasant surprise to hear that I will be playing it again! So happy to revisit a piece I fell in love with so many years ago.

It truly is a great experience when people do care. I played for the New York all state band in 2011 and it was a great feeling coming from my high school band, which wasn't too shabby to be honest. It gets better in college if you choose to pursue music.
