DIY Ultralight Backpack - MYOG

  • In this episode of zipworks, I'm making a DIY ultralight backpack intented for fast and light overnight hiking. Really excited to share this one, I think it turned out a fantastic pack - my best sewing work to date! It's fairly small, frameless and hipbeltless - so it's suited to shorter trips with minimal gear or a thru-hike if you have your gear extremely dialed. The main body is made from Ecopak Ultra 200, the shoulder straps from venom and then there is variety of mesh fabrics used for the pocketes. It's a roll-top with a magnetic closure and the buckles for the top and sternum strap are magnetized as well. The final weight came out to 14oz and the dimensions are 11x7x30in, which works out to a total usable internal volume of about 30L.
    Thanks for watching!

    ABOUT
    -
    This video is not a tutorial per se. This is how I enjoy documenting a few of my projects, it's not meant as a comprehensive sew-along guide. Some may find it useful to see how I like do things but my hope is primarily that some will find these videos inspiring - sparking creativity and ideas for making their very own bespoke gear. My thinking is that by showing the projects in a fast-paced and light-hearted manner conveys the message that making your own ultralight gear as a hobby is not very difficult and ultimately a very rewarding pursuit.
    That said, I realise that some people watching this may want to follow along and some of them will be beginners at sewing. I try my best to not leave any important steps out of the clips but for anyone finding it hard to follow even with a rewatch I will be including some commentary for each step of the process below which may shed more light. If not, leave a comment below and I or someone else in the community may be able to help.

    Terrific design and project. Kind of covers all the stuff I've wanted for years. Terrific water bottle pockets! (Who in the corporate day bag 'industry' thought it was a good idea to not have bottle pockets? For years I used either $20 day bags with pockets, or a $250 Sea To Summit, with bottle pockets -- but really crappy ones (Unless you're only going to carry two 500ml bottles. ) Add to this the $500 part I DIY repaired on my laptop because the bottle I had to put inside the bag leaked on my computer. While I probably won't be making this whole project... I carefully watched the section on the padded straps. This video is a resource far beyond this one bag. A huge contribution. Thank you.

    This was another great video and I'm going to incorporate some of these features into my first backpack. I downloaded the shoulder strap pattern. If you offer other patterns again, add an extra page that have it full size on a big sheet of paper, that way people can go to staples or something and get it printed full size, sometimes that's easier than piecing together multiple sheets.

      It’s a decent machine that is certainly capable of making some gear, best thing about it is its affordability. I can’t compare since I’ve ever only used the Singer HD but I would imagine it is not worth it to upgrade if you already have a machine of similar price.

    • @zipworks
      @zipworks  Před 2 lety

      That sucks, I feel for you! When something like this happens I usually change needle, rethread at least the top thread completely and then experiment with the tension on scraps. For whats its worth on my machine the tension is often set quite high, like a 6 or 7, I don’t think its supposed to be that high but for whatever reason it seems to work for me. Good luck

    • @_valfreyja
      @_valfreyja Před 2 lety

      Another thing that can prevent the bird's nest is holding/lightly tugging the loose threads every time you start stitching. It's one of those simple things that can make all the difference!

    Hello! How much fabric do I need if I want to make an entire backpack out of X-Pac? Don't consider mesh, airmesh and the like

      Typically 1 yard or meter is enough

      @@zipworks I looked at the scheme on your website, counted, and came out about 3 meters

      @@beviraway8616 3m sounds too much, probably more like 1m in my opinion, considering ca 137 cm width and a somewhat efficient use of fabric

    Maybe I'm doing something wrong? When I click your link for more details on the pattern I get advertising I can't click away.

      Are you referring to the PDF linked under specs or the shoulder strap pattern for sale?

    Ounces, inches, litres.....! Beautiful backpack but the weights and measures get confusing. Let's keep things simple with metric.

    What happened to your site? Is there anyway I could possibly get some specs off of you? I love your designs and I would really appreciate it.

    Aloha. I was trying to access the PDF patterns you used for your packs, but it seems like your entire website has disappeared from existence and they are no longer available. Is there any way I might be able to get a copy of the PDF for the spec sheet you used for the 40 L pack? I'm willing to pay for the pattern.

      @@tomaszpigowski3216 If you watch the video, you can actually freeze frame it when it gets to the specs, and you can copy all the measurements down. That's what I did. I am currently constructing the 40 L pack.
