    How about an IR heater in the roof pointing down - Will be out the way (if you have a solid roof) and nothing would stop you having some kind of real fire too.

    My shack has an OSB skin roof, beathable membrane and a corrugated tin covering. Can honestly say there's not a huge amount of rain noise. It's a bit dark inside but I have festoon string lights in there and it's lit up like a space station.

    As you mentioned, I think one of the most important things is space. Try and make your BBQ area as large as you can. In the future you will no doubt add to your BBQ collection. BBQ’s can be wheeled in and out of a sheltered area. But ideal if you can have a permanent home for all.

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem +1

      I've cut down the collection quite a bit over the years but I want enough space for a couple of grills at least

    Looking forward to see your build. Going to be doing one myself in the next couple of months. KJ classic II and ooni pro 16" pizza oven going in to it along with some work space.

    Timber and felt is dark lighting is pain. Better lighting as you say is essential. It's also still quite loud, nowhere near as loud as polycarbonate ( I also have a covered pergola. Mould is my biggest issue because the wood is porous moisture sets in and then it gets black spots.
    Build more worktop space than you think you need!!!!
    Any questions just ask

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem +1

      More workspace would be nice. I'm thinking a larger counter along the back then something more mobile at the front. The polycarbonate was so easy to clean... I've no idea what to do lol

  • @sheppaow

    I'm about to build one similar size in a couple of weeks time. I'm going to use metal corrugated roof...you can get sheets of it that are coated in some sort of fabric on the underside to aid with condensation and keeps the noise down a bit. Mine will have my kj classic, Weber kettle which I use as a pizza oven and rotisserie and then my kadai firebowl with tripod and small stainless steel topped table I made and some sort of garden storage to keep charcoal in along with all my other cast iron etc on shelves etc. Going to keep it super simple but practical.

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem

      Metal might be the compromise with polycarbonate skylights. Should last a long time but still might be noisy

    I quite liked the roof on your old shack, in videos where the weather is nice it made it feel more outdoors than other shacks I've seen on CZcams.
    Any idea how big your previous shack was? I'm looking at getting a large area in my garden decked this year and want to plan in a shack as a building project at some point.

  • @Meldelkel
    @Meldelkel Před rokem

    Important to take your time and enjoy it. OSB sides and roof will need a sky light or very good artificial light. If you are height restricticted you probably need a front to back pitch. Everyone says make it big but be careful of over dominating the garden especially with the slope at the back also being a big feature. Digging out the slope will mean 20 tonnes of earth and maybe a reinforced wall behind the shack so for me not worth considering further
    Looking forward to this

  • @gazzidgebbqs1209
    @gazzidgebbqs1209 Před rokem

    I'd build in the shade so you can enjoy the sun outside. I'd be mindfull of getting a pizza oven, because you will, trust me! I'd look at getting curtains for the winter. I'd personally go for a roof with velux windows in they let loads of light in and arent noisy when it rains, you can also open them to let smoke out. It all depends on budget but with curtain sides you can use it all year round the family can sit inside while you cook. Concrete worktops are going to be permanent so wherever you have those you are not going to be able to move them easily. Apart from that I'd obviously have a Bar area 😇

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem

      The whole top of the garden gets the sun in the summer. It starts from the back door and moves around to the grass shade corner in the evening. I want to keep what grass is there for now and have plans to make something else in that space. Curtains could be a good addition down the line

  • @chrisrob192
    @chrisrob192 Před rokem

    Hey James, something I put in my shack was built in cool boxes. I mainly use them for beers as its a shack/bar. But they come in handy for storing meat ready to cook if we are having a party. Saves going in and out the house all day. Just something for you to consider

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem

      That could be a nice touch. I could possibly fit in a small fridge at the back units but cool boxes might work too

  • @DutchyOutdoorCookingBBQ

    Some great ideas! You talked about portability, I think Concrete work tops are going to be too heavy to move around. I would go with the Keter units. They are light portable, stainless steel worktops with storage below. I would 100% go for a Woodfired Oven!

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem +1

      Yea I wouldn't put a concrete top on anything I'd want to move around but I think the back unit will be fixed in place and I'm curious to see how it turns out lol I'd be more inclined to have a live fire setup than a wood fired oven but just don't know what

  • @johng2718
    @johng2718 Před rokem

    Mate, excellent timing I'm planning a shack too, good to hear the ideas. On the roofing, if you've got mains power running up to it, maybe a timber felt roof and load of LEDs to give brightness

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem

      LEDs can flicker a lot on video so might not be the best solution but a mix of skylights and LEDs could work

    • @mrcflemingful
      @mrcflemingful Před rokem

      @@Barbechoo Sounds like this is the main issue...if you were concerned ONLY with how the light was when cooking for friends and family (which your first shack was brilliant by the way) then ditto...recreate that and enjoy the sound of rain as your culinary genius blossoms! However, for a studio, (and you obviously know this), all the lighting needs to be absolutely controlled. Thus, I'd go for the felt roof option with the specific lights (sorry...perhaps no skylights?). Anywho, glad you're back and sharing with the BBQ family!!

    Hey James....Great to see you back. Never did get round to building a shack myself, and probably won't now until we hopefully move house. But will definitely be following for tips...make sure any potential new house has enough room! Re heating....have you thought about infra red?

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem +1

      I have seen infra red but my heart doesn't lie to it. I like the idea of a fire (that is what we all love doing after all)

  • @johnnyq79
    @johnnyq79 Před rokem

    Is there anything to be said to close it in on all sides? I had this idea of having a large window that would open like a chip van and maybe having a counter flip out so as to have a couple of bar stools sitting at it from the outside. The KJ to the side and service counter to the back side.
    Also, would a word burning stove give enough heat if it's not closed in.

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem

      I like the idea of it being open as I can easily move things out of the shack... Also means I can possibly extend out in those directions. I used to have a firepit I lit beside the shack and it was enough to take the chill out of the air, that's all I really need

  • @jenfavc
    @jenfavc Před rokem

    I would go for a felted roof with velux, these can be picked up second hand so wouldnt cost an arm and a leg.

    • @Barbechoo

  • @BackDoorBBQing

    My roof is polycarbonate, and I wouldn't change it for a solid roof, especially with felt. I've had to replace the felt twice on my garage (now box metal sheeting) and have epdm to replace the felt on the shed.

    • @Barbechoo
      @Barbechoo  Před rokem +1

    If it's a choice between the noise in rain with PC, or the dark with a solid roof, then PC wins every time. Your shack will be dark all the time with a solid roof - not so with PC. You said it yourself, you don't film when it's raining.

  • @sonicbacon666
    @sonicbacon666 Před rokem

    Hi James, exited for you mate, your right there is a trade off with light v noise, my shack is quite dark, (timber/felt roof). I have plenty of lighting in there but for pictures and videos you may need some proper lighting to get decent exposure buddy. And in direct sun the shack gets really hot inside too. We have the old discord group if you fancy a chat buddy, I’ll give you an insight in to what I’ve done and what I’d change. Shout me up mate 👍🏻
