Food Storage: How to Cook a Delicious Meal With Freeze-Dried Foods
Vložit
- čas přidán 21. 09. 2023
- Freeze-dried foods are a great way to add nutrition, convenience, and diversity to your stored foods. We use our freeze dryer to preserve the harvest and to turn our leftovers into shelf-stable meals for another day. Some freeze-dried foods reconstitute better than others. We love to snack on freeze-dried fruits and vegetables just as they are.

I think there should be a video on refilling those canisters for the Vesta if there comes a time you can't buy the canisters anymore.
Hi Kylen & Jonathan my favorite couple ❤❤❤❤ Love your videos.
Im so glad I started to prepare years ago. All the grain mills damaged by 🌪️ this week is going to effect our food supplies.
You are so kind! Thanks for joining us and being part of the solution!
I’ve been wanting to see this side of freeze dried food! Usually no one shows reconstituting.thanks
You’re welcome 😊
I also have wait for this, I'm 83, I want to eat my freeze dried foods now, well within 6 months to a year.
What I like to do is mix freeze dried with canned goods. Save on water because the canned goods have water or broth in with them.
For shredded cheese, if you have more time. It's best to wet a paper towel wrap around your serving of shredded cheese and store in a zip top bag over night. This method works great for bread items too like pancakes or French toast.
I do like this idea, as it gives me some ideas on how to make different meals. Sadly, I like to freeze dry meals that my wife and I have already put together, just in case we ever lose the ability to cook... That, and I'm just plain lazy. 🤣
That's a great idea!
We were responsible for a family reunion meal during COVID in 2020 and didn’t have a clue how many would show up. We decided to freeze dried sliced roast beef and when the time came we reconstituted using Au jus. It was perfect, and we only prepared what was needed. Everyone loved it and we still have left overs today.
I bought FD 🍋 slices and love them for teas ,water, cooking,
I have also dehydrated lemon slices myself but FD better😉
These are fantastic ideas. I so badly want to get a freeze dryer
It is awesome. Some libraries and local extension offices have freeze driers that you can sign up and use for free. Save up. Don't ever go into debt for something like this :)
I want 12 really bad I want to freeze dry some stuff
I love FD! Mountain House is still my fav!!
I pulled some of our freeze dried food for super.
Pork chops. Win
Cooked cubed potatoes. Win
Lasagna. Eatable
Cottage cheese. Fail
.
Tell me more about the cottage cheese. I haven't tried that yet and it is on my list!
Thank you for sharing
Agreed, Jonathan! Always hungry.
Love visual instructions like this. Excellent! My favorite FD food is when it is NOT reconstituted. FD grapes…in chicken salad. Yes, please!!!
These green folks should appreciate how there’s no food waste ♻️ 😂. Freeze dried pineapple 🍍 of course 🥰.
Right!!
I don't have a freeze drier but I've been picking up some along the way. Great demo!
Great video. Thank you Jonathan and Kylene. My favorite freeze dried foods are what we have harvested ourselves. Happy trails!
Love your videos. Do you have a link for the baking pan you used?
Good to see meals from your preps.
Good information. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for being so kind!
Id like to know how you are going to secure your food stores from hungry neighbours when the grid goes down
We would share with our hungry neighbors to the best of our ability. We are prepared to defend ourselves if that becomes necessary. Hopefully, working together will make it so this isn't necessary.
I would have to say my favorite is my homemade lasagna with meatballs. Tastes great and I don't have to deal with 5 tons of leftovers or overeating because there is so much there. Just make how much you want. Great for portion control. Love the channel thanks for all the info.
That's awesome! Teach me how you rehydrate it please :)
@@TheProvidentPrepper I just rehydrate my spaghetti sauce with a little too much water to make thin, then put the lasagna and meatballs into the sauce and let set. I make my meatballs small or cut in half before fd. the lasagna soaks in the thin sauce and flavors it more at the same time, the sauce gets thicker as the lasagna rehydrates.
Helpful video, thanks!
Thanks for another great video. I’m hoping the same principle for making food from freeze dried foods will work for dehydrated foods. I don’t want to store one in my condo/Apt that I’ll only use a couple times a year. The tool branch of the library has 2 dehydrators that I can checkout to make disks from lemons 🍋 I get gifted from 3 different friends. Ready to try other extras from my plot at the community garden.
PS: Sunday afternoon I’m going to try some freeze dried unsweetened blueberries someone gave me. They are a fruit with one of the lowest sugar levels in them. I’m hoping they work out because it would be nice to take freeze dried or dehydrated berries on a car camping trip.
PPS: I hope the technology gets so food freeze driers are as small as dehydrators so the tool library will get those for checkout, too.
I freeze dry a combination of ingredients to make meals and the meals themselves. I want to be able to choose between taking the time to assemble a meal and having the convenience of just hydrating something quickly. I prep and store not only for any kind of emergency but also to help family and close friends who are struggling in this economy. Hydrating does take some practice so I like to freeze dry items that are a bit more forgiving if I don't get it just right.
Eggs, for sure. Fruits, second. Guacamole and refried beans. We also slice meat very thinly and FD the slices. Works great to make hot roast beef sandwiches or stir fry later. Honestly, there are so many foods - mashed potatoes with cheese and garlic or green onion. Salsa is another great one. We do more ingredients but we're starting to get into some dishes. FD has worked great to help us save money by buying in bulk and saving for later. It's been a Godsend.
Your graphic showed 2 T FD egg + 2 T water. But your narrative said 1/2 cup (8 T) water and 4 T egg. OOOOOOPPPS!!
Do you have recipes for creating a “meal” in a Mylar bag? I’m trying to create meals with freeze dried food that I can store in our BOB in case we have to evacuate. Recipes that have a LONG shelf life, instant and can be eaten with only hot water.
I powder the bananas after I freeze dry them. It makes storage more efficient and its very easy to rehydrate. 2 Tbsp = 1 banana.
That sounds great! How much water do you add to the 1 Tbsp banana powder?
Love to cook FD Eye of Round Steak. We fully cook it before it goes into the FD! Yum!!
Nice video TPP!
So I have freeze dried blueberries and want to use them in baking but when I rehydrate them my mix turns blue.
How would you use them in say… a muffin recipe? Should I put them in dry and just add more liquid to the mix?
Would you give more information on the Vesta and the Ember. I have never heard of those. I bought a HR freeze dryer. I am learning to use it now.
Here is a video review on the VESTA czcams.com/video/eR-yPcENA1w/video.html and here is one on the Ember czcams.com/video/nb-tIZ1Xu_o/video.html Congrats on your freeze dryer!

How cool! Thanks for this video. :)
I freeze dry all my leftovers
11:46 😂
I don't have a freeze dryer, but I have been thinking about MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) that don't need hot water. However, I also found that there are flameless heaters available to purchase online. I'm thinking about making a MRE (for the whole day) with the flameless heater and some other prepackaged items all in a Mylar bag with an oxygen absorber. However, my question is for the prepackaged foods (ie. granola bars, trail mix, crackers/crackers with cheese/crackers with peanut butter, pop tarts, fruit gummies, slim Jims, Beef Jerky -- might have to repackage a large bag into smaller portions [mylar with O2 absorber?]) is it better to poke holes in the original packaging or leave the prepackage food sealed as it came? I know some foods like peanut butter won't last as long as other foods. I'm hoping for ~3 (maybe 4) year shelf life. Or do you think I should individually vacuum seal or seal in mylar with Oxygen absorber?
