But we don't know, and can't know, and Vash never will. The life he saves could be a worthless human who chose evil at every turn, and the one who dies might have lived the hardest, meanest life of all, and we can't know beforehand. The irony of Legato is he has every reason to believe humans need to end, to stop. He is exactly the person Vash would want to save most of all, to show a brighter future. But Legato won't hear that, won't see that, and sees no reason to tell Vash about it. The people who needed saving the most are the people who are too far gone to save.
That explains a lot because when I first saw this scene when I was young I thought he just kill these guys because he felt they were disturbing him while he was eating

Yes, Cole is right. Legato actually was the main villain for the most part of the Gung-Ho Guns Arc. The fight with Millions Knives (Knives) was actually for the most part a denouement for the character of Vash the Stampede (Vash) to show what he had learned.
They did have a fight in the manga, however, the final confrontation felt fresh and original. Instead of a predictable final showdown, legato forced vash to break his promise, and died with a smile on his face. It's one of the many reasons why legato is a better villain than knives.
thats why midvalley is one of my favorite trigun villains (or possibly a fave in general), it's so funny how he just. hangs out and provides background music to legato. i like his writing better in the manga, he has more nuance to him, but his presence in the anime is unmatched and i hope trigun stampede does the same

Kind of odd that in the anime, Vash only has one singular power (make an arm cannon from the gun), yet Legato has way more powers including pyrokinesis by using Vash's transplanted arm which Vash never gets. In the manga, Vash has way more varied use of his Plant abilities while Legato only has one power that is actually his own and has nothing to do with Vash (microscopic wires that he controls from his brain).
Maybe Vash knows he has the powers, but wouldnt use it to control other's wills making it immoral. But there is the power he did that made a power reactor not explode.
Technically Vash has a variety of less obvious abilities. he has vastly increased strength, speed, agility, reflexes, senses and the like. That's one of the reasons why he never loses for the most part.
It's ironic this VA played two characters who are complete opposites. Kenshin is a total pacifist who'd sooner kill himself then ever kill another person and goes out of his way to save any person he can. Legato meanwhile is about as cold and ruthless as you can get, showing no mercy or empathy to anyone.
