  • Shergar (1978 - unknown) was an acclaimed Irish racehorse, and winner of the 1981 Epsom Derby by a record 10 lengths, the longest winning margin in the race's 226-year history. This victory earned him a spot in The Observer newspaper's 100 Most Memorable Sporting Moments of the Twentieth Century. The jockey on the day was Walter Swinburn. Shergar was trained by Michael Stoute and owned by HH Aga Khan IV.

Wow, what a jockey! So sad to hear this news. He was so stylish along with Cauthen and Eddery. Now only Steve left of those 3, way to young to die, R.I.P.

People say this was a sub standard Race, but it's still the Derby, and the way Shergar won was crazy, a record ten lengths being eased up well before the line, and being patted on the Neck ??, along with SeaBird, and Nijinsky the Best 3 imho

I was 16 years old and watched a young Walter Swinburne kick shergar out of the starting stalls into the perfect position and then watched in awe as the two legends swept to the front in the home straight and they just kept on going further and further away from the field. I'll never forget that derby and I personally think shergar was the greatest derby winner of them all

Oh Shergar poor horse. He was stolen on my 15th birthday and to this day it's breaks my heart to think of how he met his end. How I hate the people and world when they bring defenceless animals into their arguments. Damn the IRA.

@ mark Dunlop he was a truly great horse that was killed before his time ! It's said the IRA gunned him down whilst he was still in his horse box coz shergar was a very highly strung horse and couldn't settle but for me the really sad thing was that the following year he was due to run in the st legar , the arc ,and the champion stakes at ascot ! And if he'd won them that would marked him as one of the all time greats and also I feel that SHERGAR is the only horse in the last 30 years that could have beaten the great FRANKEL !

Sean you talk crap. Why would they run Shergar in the Leger again when he got defeated easily as a 3 year old in it. Shergar was to never race again as he was retired to stud after his defeat in the Leger. You made all the crap up.
