- After many requests following our retrospectives of the old Dragon Ball Z games, we are returning to Legacy Of Goku. However, we're doing it in a new way! Today, we dive deep into this Gameboy Advance relic which was critically panned and see if it's truly as abysmal as they say...

Who else remembers being stuck in the Namekian temple trying to get that dang green artifact?
I just found it without looking for the solution! You can go through some walls in the tempel!
Yep. Had to get my cousin to do it for me lmao
The legacy of goku games, and buus fury, as well as GT Transformation were all a staple of my childhood. Back then reviews didn’t exist to me, and this game was a gem!
Legacy 2 and Buus fury were genius. Alas I was only able to experience it on a gba rom on my PC. Easily my favourite DBZ games of all time. I love how they used Bruce Falconer's music score aswell.
Legacy of Goku II, Buu's Fury and Transformation are unbelievable games. Legacy of Goku 1 is rough
Nothing better than that blind buy as a kid that was an absolute score.
@@Croftyhere LoG 1 is fun to fly into energy blasts and become immortal until you fly again. Lol, it was a broken game, you either get man handled or become immortal and kill everyone else. It's a great way to train once regular enemies start doing ki blast attacks, especially since the game is full of difficulty spikes
Back then reviews definitely existed…
I purchased a GBA just to buy this game. And for it’s time, and my youth, I loved it.
I did extra chores and yard work odd jobs for months for family and neighbors to save up the cash for the GBA and this game!
You’ve become one of my favorite channels in like 3 weeks. Binged every single video you have. Keep ‘em coming!
#meatrider
This game was so disappointing as a kid but without it we wouldn’t have legacy 2 and buus fury so I’ll gladly expect as this game for what it is

They did not switch Developers.
Webfoot tech is the team that made all 3 Legacy of Goku games. They were making the 1st Legacy and that awful GBA fighting game at the SAME TIME with only about 9 months of development time. They had more time and tools to make Legacy of Goku 2 afterwards.
Infograms was the Publisher, who later rebranded to ATARI
You mean to tell me he did not do his proper research?
Thank you. I was gonna say it but i looked to make sure someone else hadnt already said it before I started typing aeay
@@PikaLink91 Honestly thought I had the proper knowledge. I didn't feel unsure saying it, but happy to be corrected. Thank you @herodm77 ! Hearted your comment so more can see.
@@retrorebound8887 Love your work man!! Keep game collecting and preservation alive!!!
They made taiketsu at the same time which i had. It was awful xD
This game had a glitch where you could use flying to make yourself invincible. Figured it out randomly and finally beat this game after having it for months as a kid.
Up, Down, Left, Right, B, A (during the intro song.) 😂
Honestly, as a young teen when it come out it completely captivated my imagination and I loved it dearly. Still do. Sure, as an adult it is a bit grindy. Slow paced, but it was the first experience where I felt like I was actually apart of the story. For that and it's presentation alone it will always be precious too me.
Obviously 2 was better and Fury was phenomenal.
The whole trilogy is absolutely worth playing for any DB fans.
Same! I was like 9 at the time and I loved it!
It says something about how huge the DBZ Boom of the early '00s was that a game as genuinely awful as this even got a sequel in the first place. Legacy of Goku II is easily one of gaming's biggest glow-ups.
Remember they start out with a very small budget as a small studio. As soon as the money started coming in that's when the real meat of the franchise started coming in.
It wasn’t THAT bad.
@@westonmeyer3110 It was. Even as a kid I thought it was trash.
@@GamingintheAM0801 You aren't the only one. The game got fairly middling reviews. I don't see why people try to defend the first Legacy of Goku. The combat is fundamentally flawed and most of Goku's other abilities don't aid you much. There's no real way to beat this game without stocking up on herbs and spamming Solar Flare.
I remember watching my step brother play through all of Legacy of Goku 1 to 3 on my mom's laptop back when I was a kid, never got to play it, but always wanted to.
They're just such a vibe
Your bro wouldnt let you play? That sucks could of have awesome memories
I never hated the first game, but damn was it diffcult, had an acquaintance that let me borrow his copy. Says a lot when this game is the only game that makes Raditz feel intimidating. Unfortunately I hadn't managed to beat the game without the invincibility cheat lol.
actually Attack of the saiyans has raditz as a boss fight like 1/3 of the way through the game and it's actually a bit of a difficulty spike if you aren't loaded up on items. it's not the hardest RPG but it's a far better game than legacy of goku
I've played attack of the Saiyans but I mean in the context that Raditz is usually the first boss or opponent you fight in most DBZ games@@jackdiddles4304
@@jackdiddles4304 I played Attack of the Saiyans in around 2010 for the first time, The Legacy of Goku I and II around 2018! I really enjoyed that Attack of the Saiyans was a turn-based RPG!
Remember Legacy of Goku II only happen cause Legacy of Goku 1 was selling like hotcakes back then despite the game not being quite as good. Back in 2002 the Dragon Ball Z hype were hot in North America and the urge of getting a chance to play the very first ever North America Dragon Ball Z game was exciting. Remember before the GBA, PS2, GameCube era, there was never a Dragon Ball Z game released for NA yet and as Toonami brought the DBZ anime to a more wider western audience, the DBZ hype was big. Almost as big as the Pokemon hype, I remember getting excited seeing DBZ been showcase on GamePro magazine saying there will be DBZ games coming for PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and GBA, as soon as the games are coming, my excitement got the better of me. I end up buying all DBZ games back then whether or not they're good or not and I'm glad I did cause because I help bought LOG1, the money I throw at Webfoot lead to them improving the game with the sequels.
Literally decided to play through the game again because of this video. I haven’t played it in almost 20 years. It’s BAD. I beat it in about 6 hours but oh jeez it’s rough. Never got around to the sequels and the quality jump from 1 to 2 is immense. Thanks for starting a dragon ball z game binge for me!
Buu's Fury is the real gem
You made a really good point that in a game like DBZ Kakarot (2020) most people would expect that the exploration aspect of the game would be pretty good, but Legacy of Goku (2002) actually did a better job with the environments having much more stuff to actually find and interact with.
I'm glad you talked about LoG I. Honestly, I remember having a hard time with it, but overall enjoyed it. I remember loving Buu's Fury, and spent a lot time on it. LoG II, however, I barely remember anything about, even though I finished it twice while I only finished I once
No all three dragon Ball z game boy advance games in that RPG style we're actually really fun and very faithful to the anime and even had many Easter eggs hidden in them
The first was trash
Legacy of Goku 1 was shitty broken game, the other 2 games were gold though
@@rodrigonascimento1800 Legacy 1 was like Pokémon Red and Blue. It has its charm to this day but shows clear signs of being the first, and its sequel was infinitely better.
This is my new favorite channel! I'm glad I found you
Oh man you sent me on a trip through time with that commercial on the beginning. I remember just how excited it made me as a kid and I BEGGED my mom to buy me the game. If only I new the horror that would come, I never was able to even best Raditz
I genuinely believe in the concept of judging games not just as individual experiences, but also as combined groups. The Legacy of Goku series for example. You can look at each game individually, but taking into account that they are a series together and that certain ones came before others contextualizes them. Judging Legacy of Goku 2 as a standalone game by today's standards, it might not hold up as well to a new player as it might someone nostalgic to it. However, starting with the first game will contextualize it to them to where they might be able to see what improvements were made in the second game, and they will be more capable of appreciating those little details. It doesn't guarantee they will like they game, but they might at least be able to acknowledge that it was an improvement.
However, at the same time, I don't think that people should get so obsessed with judging games as a group that they forget they are individual experiences. It's logical to compare to what came before or since to a certain extent, but it's also important to remember that each game is also it's own thing. It's important, I think, to examine games from both perspectives. It's normal and natural for us humans to have preferences and biases, but we should try to put such things aside when trying games out for the first time. A game being old or made in a particular style doesn't necessarily mean you won't like it, and you can't know for sure unless you can give it a genuine chance. We can't even trust mainstream opinions to tell us what we will and won't like, the only way to know for sure is to go in as blind as possible and give it a shot. Reviews should be treated as a guidance on what to expect, not a mandate on what to and not to like.
i can't believe i am only just now finding out matty has another channel had to throw you a sub
I love this, can't wait to hear you talk bout the next one :)
Damn forget about these! Only played the first one as a kid and the memories of me struggling vs the Saiyan invasion brought me back. And the puzzles (?) on Namek. Was awesome as a kid especially the “cutscene” going super saiyan.
This was the first game I got with my og gba agb-01 back in Christmas of ‘02☺️ so much nostalgia struggling with this game, trying to find some good lighting and extra batteries. Sounds awful on paper but the memories are still sweet
I appreciate all the Dragonball game uploads man I've been watching you for a long time started with fallout on your main channel, never commented before but if you or anyone wanted to ever try a mmo version of log/buus fury check out Dbz Heroes United, its a BYOND game on PC and it has a discord and a old trailer on CZcams its been around since the early 00s and still gets updates today. The most recent big one was a battle royale mode like fortnite
Great video as always!
Underrated but DBZ Attack of the Saiyans and Dragon Ball Origins were also awesome!
We had some good handheld DBZ games looking back now.
origins was horrible (i haven’t played it since it released so idk how i would feel about it now.) Attack of The Saiyans is in my top 3 DB games of all time tho.
Agree with you for Attack of the Saiyans. A shame nothing similar came for the other sagas. The exploration was great in this too especially for its time.
The thing I remember most about this game is the glitch that if you are hit with an energy blast while flying you become invincible. that's what i used to beat freeza
Damn! Haven't seen you in a long ass time! I remember watching your other channel religiously when you were first covering Fallout 4 stuff.
Glad to see you're branching out into other gaming content
Man I loved these games growing up
Love your content!!
UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, B,A IYKYK.
Yessss!!! love this game and your content
Hey, I know that The Legacy of Goku is very challenging, but I was able to complete it two times without dying once. I collected plenty of herbs and used the senzu beans wisely. In addition, I defeated the dinosaur in the forest very often to reach level 10 quickly (600 EPs every time). If you make use of the glitches, you should be able to beat the game consistently 🙂👍🏻
Omg yesss you’ve unlocked a core memory of younger days 😊
Never played the original Legacy of Goku but I did play its sequel when I was younger. I fired it up recently and started new and man they really made a great game, highly recommend making a video on that one next its miles better.
Hope you try out some older Dragon Quest games sometime soon! Would love your takes on my favorite series!
Nice review, Mr. Pink.
Thank you, ginger ProJared!
I never played it but definitely will be checking it out now!
Just played through this myself recently
Insane how accurate your review was for the game from my own perspective.
The game has some cool ideas but it is so brutal, it's very unforgiving, and it never gets better, in fact it gets worse.
I loved the first two games as a kid
Definitely do a review of Legacy of Goku 2 and Buus Fury
First I'm hearing of it being bad. Loved this game as a kid.
oh it was a blast, but then Legacy 2 came out, and man on man... it blew the first one out of the water
Yo the GBA is looking super slick my guy. love that vibrant screen
Yes.
I remember the only way we could get through this one was to do the immortality cheat code during the games intro. It's actually crazy how big of an improvement the second game was
The time to kill for Legacy of Goku was AWFUL. Thankfully they fixed it in LOG2
Having just completed Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, I felt the Castlevania "death by touch" hate. So many times, I got frustrated by a boss because I took damage from a light graze against my ankle.
Funny thing is that this was developed my my VideoGame Programming classes Teacher. She is the Ceo/Owner of Webfoot Technologies. This trilogy was their biggest game series.
I loved this review. Please make DBZ LEGACY OF GOKU 2.!!! can't wait for the next episode of "is it that bad?" I'l have treats ready for that video. :3
My brother was the lead game designer and originally wanted the game to be an RPG with this IP but unfortunately there was a game type compromise and the manager at webfoot ended up putting herself in the credit as the Lead Designer at the end.
I loved this series! The original wasn't the greatest but I remember cheesing my level up. #2 was a huuuuge jump! It took me years to realize Buu's Fury existed but so great as well. The last two games have a decent amount of side quests. Would love to see all three on Switch Online but that service is a drip. Great video Matty!
Bro I’d buy that in an instant.
@@thefanficdinosaur7621 we can only dream 😂
@@miked3018 it’d be hella easy to remaster all 3 games into a trilogy. Atari is the kind of company that would release anything to make money. We just need to make them hear it.
@@thefanficdinosaur7621 it's working for Capcom and their megaman games@
@@miked3018 my point still stands
The combat for this game was completely broken. It was utterly impossible to have a sensible fight. The only way to play without pulling your hair out, you have to spam the solar flare technique which freezes the enemy momentarily. You can get in a few hits before running away again. There was a cheat code for unlimited health you could use, which was the only way I could enjoy the game
There was an infinite health cheat?
Fuck, that would've made things bareable playing it.
I beat the game by spamming kamehameha and poping all the sensu beans you get in game as ssj2 gohan.
@@-LastStand- Yes! You have to put it in at the start of the theme song before the menu pops up. It’s honesty the only real way to play the game and enjoy the story without having a heart attack fighting a dog in the forest 😂
I'm going to have to go play this again and then I'll come back to the video!
Those wolves are some of the hardest enemies in gaming
They had to know that this game was rough because the developers put an invincibility code in the game
Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku came out on May 14, 2002 from 20 years ago. Who never thought that this game be able to have two sequels.
I played this one after LOG2 and my god was it a major step backwards. Admittedly, I still loved it because I was a major Dragon Ball fan as a kid and loved anything that had to do with the series. But I just remember it being sooo hard. I eventually beat it but I remember never playing it again after that.
I was actually able to secure a CIB copy a year or two ago just so I could have the complete GBA DBZ collection, but I still don’t plan on revisiting it any time soon lol.
To this day I’ve never been more disappointed with a game, going from LoG2 back to LoG1 was such a huge bummer for me bc the saiyan/frieza saga were my favorites
How could it be a step backwards if you went back to the first game from the second ? Lol LOG2 is a huge step forward from it's predecessor.
The legacy of Goku series was my childhood especially Buu's Fury, which is why I'm glad they made dragon ball z kakarot on consoles
Love the soundtracks
Anyone who suffered through this game you're godlike
its the reason I never gave 2 and buus fury a shot lmao
Suffered?
@@bri1085 this game was always impossible for me 😭 2 and buus fury are all time classics though ofc
@@parkernv wait realised I only played the sequel and not the original, 2 was a lot if fun.
This game was amazing back then to me lol
I remember picking up LoG 2 as a youngin and I had a pretty good time with it, I was compelled to max it all out and do everything and the soundtrack bopped occasionally. Haven't dared touch it since as I was sure it's better through the old rose tinted and never got to play 1 or 3
legacy of goku, supersonic warriors and buus fury are all the dbz games i had as a child. I still love them
Supersonic warriors is done by arc system works. Who are the creators of fighterz
i used to really like these games as a kid i had fun with them it’s been a while though so idk what i would think now but i remember having fun for sure
When I was a kid I couldn't beat Raditz without the infinite life cheat so I played the whole game with it on.
Definitely used that cheat constantly
Well that was stupid
Up down left right b a
Only reason I beat this game plus that part on namek with the finger pointing through the wall stumped me forever as a kid. Up down left right b a
I don’t think I ever got past the screen with the wolfs! Needed a buddy to help me get to vegeta fight and maaaan did that fight take forever!
Loved This game took forever to figure out how get the 3rd ball /red/green/blue.
Remember game guides? Like the thick cover manuals for games? I remember now that that's how I beat this game
Would enjoy seein the other Legacy games yeah
When the second one came out I got it. The Second one was really fun. I was surprised when I went back to the first one. That said, incredible improvement
the make myself unkillable glitch is how i beat this game as a kid 😅 there was a mechanic while flying and getting hit by ki that made you unable to be harmed. it was fixed in 2
God, I still remember the temple on Namek.
I think the only good GBA system is the GBA SP that flips open and close.
The GBA system that actually allows you to see what is on its screen.
I had a blue one, and I miss it man.
The age I played it, I found it way too difficult. I can still remember how long it took to beat Raditz. And because of that, I didn't finish and never bought another DBZ handheld.
Dragonball Gba games are peak nostalgia for my childhood
I just finish my first ever play through of this game. It was awesome! I have seen a lot of reviews saying it sucked, and you had to grind in a bad way. I thought it was a great game
Had that game when I was a kid good memories
It was actually the same developer for the whole series, Webfoot Technologies. The budget was higher, more than likely because of a successful prequel
I decided to try this game despite the negative reviews and it felt miserable to play as expected.
However, it seems there is a rom hack that makes the game way more playable and fun. It balances starting enemies to be way easier, the late game harder so you aren’t one-shotting everything, and your flight recharges on the ground so you don’t have to hunt around for those orbs all the time and can easily use flight in battle to get some distance between you and your enemy.
Playing like this and wow is it like night and day. Really glad to not have to skip this after all as I want to play the entire series.
Sweet! Played the 2nd and 3rd Game and loved them! Haven't tried the 1st one though...
i bought the first game on release ans loved it. but the same happened when 2 came out and that one blew me away because it had improved upon the first game it literally every possible way. but honestly when the first one was new it was great! just didnt have very much content. never played the 3rd buus fury.. think you can use equipment and things like that aswell
I played this game as a child, and yes hit detection was not great but this game was easy... i beat this game multiple times and was a big part of my childhood. Along with Legacy of Goku II, and Buu's Fury.
I really hope to see you cover Supersonic Warriors for gba, that was probably my favorite game growing up
Man that game is fun😂
Great fighting game
I loved the sequels, but god this is one of the roughest games I’ve ever played and beaten
Sheeeeit. I remember that commercial
Ips gbas look great, but I prefer ags 101 screens for the authentic feel. That screendoor effect really helps the pixels where as IPS looks emulated.
I loved LoG 2 so much as a kid, so I was really surprised to find out that the original was so bad.
I remember playing this game on my older brother's gameboy sp, I didn't know what was going on or what to do
Me & my mate smashed these games out! They stuck very true to the original stories which was great 👍
I remember getting this game for my birthday back in 2002 or 2003 and there was a way to get to ma x level quickly so the difficulty in battle wasn't an issue lol. But I did give up towards the end as I couldn't figure out how to get through the temple part on plane namek.
The title screen of this game looks like it was made in Flash.
I hated the namek section when you had to go around and find tbose orb things in the statues.. i still have nightmares about that part in legacy of goku 1
Ahh yes, Legacy of Goku. My first ever moment of gamer rage. I forgot to save around the Vegeta arc and died then bashed my 10 year old gamer skull against my game boy. Fun times.
this game really makes you appreciate 2 and buu's fury a lot more, much more fun games.
Mom rented me this game so long ago. I liked it as rough as it can be. I feel it’s a tad underrated. But you can definitely tell the immense improvement with the sequels.
Haven’t watched the video yet, but…. I love the LoG games. They might not be amazing Dragon Ball games, but they ARE really fun RPGs.
Now that I’ve finished the video: definitely agree with some aspects of the game feeling broken or not fully thought out. The second game definitely improved on everything, but for a 20 year old game I have fond memories of it. I wish more GBA games got remasters for the Switch, and other consoles honestly. They deserve quality of life improvements at least
I remember as a kid saving up enough money to go and buy Legendary Super Warriors for the GBC. I already had a GBA but I found out that game is awesome and really wanted it. When I got to the store it was sold out... which made me sad. This game was on the shelf though... So I ended up getting this instead. I got home, started playing and felt that actual dagger your were talking about in the video. One of my earliest cases of buyers remorse.
I loved this game series growing up lol
I used to go to the grocery store with my parents just to read the Tips and Tricks magazine walkthrough of this because I couldn’t afford to own the game.
