Thanks for explaining exactly what they are, I could never get my head around it as I also heard that Edinburgh was built over an older city, I get it now. I got the concept after doing street view on top of cowgate bridge and could see the lower level, thanks again
No worries!
I could never understand the location and arrangement of the vaults, until I took a tour into that mysterious lair. An extensive labyrinth runs beneath South Bridge, with dark and hellish subterranean chambers concealed by the overbuild. By all means, if you've never seen the vaults, get yourself a tour through this intriguing part of Old Town! Thanks for today's installment, Tony.
Hi ! Is it the same location as the real Mary King Close ?
My band used to love playing Bannermans, the acoustics are fantastic.
There was rehearsal spaces just round the corner for a while in the `80s. Turned into a nightclub for a few years and i heard it re opened as rehearsal spaces!!
LOVE the vaults. Thank you for telling the story, I never get tired of hearing about them and you explained it just fine, really enjoyed listening, you sir are a fine storyteller! 🙂 I miss them quite a bit as I was a guide with Mercat for 5 years before lockdown and adore hearing and talking about the city's underground secrets 🙂
I Loved your video "History" chat re the Vaults in Edinburgh. I had the great pleasure of staying in Edinburgh in 2017. I toured the Vaults and did the Ghost walking tour as well. I absolutely loved the stories even though I was scared half to death in the vaults at one point. Being highly sensitive to spirits ( don't think I'm crazy) I could feel the presence of some in those vaults. I also believed the old stories about a city underneath and it being closed off during the plague and a new city being built over top. Glad to have that straightenend out!
Tony, love learning about the history of Edinburgh. Thanks for all you do.
Love it when you ramble Tony, you always have something interesting to say! The vaults sound fascinating, will definitely have to add it to the list I am slowly building for when I can finally visit! 😃
Very informative. Thanks for helping me visualize where I was, when going underground on the tours and placing above ground location. Thank you. Please more of the historical stuff.
If you're ever in Seattle, you should tour the Seattle Underground. It actually is an underground city of sorts. After a big fire, they moved the roadways and sidewalks up a storey, leaving the existing structures underneath.
I live in Vancouver, only a 2.5 hour drive south and enjoy it when I have visitors!
Thrre is a night stalker episode on it. Fascinating.
Hello Tony. I love learning the history of Edinburgh. Thanks for all you do. You are the best . Love from Inger and Sweden
Good to see you and Merlin! This video is very interesting and educational. I went on a tour of the underground caverns about 13 years ago. The guide told us that the city was built on top of the old city. I'm glad to know that it's an urban legend. Now I won't be telling others false information.
Very interesting! I did a tour several years ago that was mostly about ghosts 👻. They didn’t really explain the history, and I’m so glad you did! Great job!
Thanks for a good story. I wish I’ve heard it from you in a nice pub and then might have been able to squeese another good story out of you. All the best from Denmark❤
Definitely a place we're checking out on our next trip. Thanks for the info! 👍
What a delightful doggy. A handsome fellow
Yes he is. 😀
Great video buddy, thanks for a better understanding!
I'll be there in August! Looking forward to seeing you underground! Thanks for your stories!
Love the Border appearance! :D The vaults are fascinating, when I was a kid I always thought people were living under there 😂 all I heard about was the 'city under the city' and assumed it was something from Futurama...
The underground city came about from the Jules Verne's novel, The Underground City which references Arthur's Seat as being above the underground city.
The video was great! Exactly what I needed to understand. I can't believe I had never heard of this aspect of Edinburgh before. Now I have more incentive to visit Scotland!
Thank you for chatting to us! We appreciate it. Nice talk about the vaults under Edinburgh. I visited several years ago (from Canada) my bro married a scottish lass! I will be back again! :D
Great to see you back again, lovely to see Merlin. Hope it won’t be too long before you can get out and about again. Best wishes to you all.
Absolutely love learning about the history of Edinburgh. If you haven't done so already you should do a video about Burke & Hare.
I love listening to your stories very interesting 😌
You explained really well. We have been there so it was easy to follow you.
Love this channel! Watching from Houston, Texas, USA.
Thank you so much.
Not confused at all. Good job! 👍

just come across your channel, as I will be visiting Edinburgh in a couple of weeks. Cool video! look forward to seeing more. 👍👍
Thank you so much. Hope you enjoy it!
@@ClanBroonford Cheers. That Makers Mash place looks pretty decent, the portions okay? If I do a video of my stay in Edinburgh I'll give you a wee mention 👍👍
Tony, I remember when I toured Edinburgh in 1990 our guide told us the story of the closes being walled up after people got the plague and left in there. Interesting
Same! And, we just did a tour in 2019. Our guide did talk about the business that had used the vaults and the darker things that happened after the businesses left, just as Tony mentioned, but our guide also talked about how it was sealed up due to illness, plague, and some people chose (or were left)to stay behind and were sealed in
Well good morning and welcome back. As interesting as the history of the Vaults is the Engineering is amazing. As a builder the first time I saw the buildings on the Royal Mile and the Castle was HOW did they build on such challenging ground. By the way.....who layed the first base stones for the Castle waaaaay out at the edge right next to certain death?
Despite having been through the vaults, I was still kind of confused on how they all worked 😂 thanks for helping! Love your videos from Australia
Weve done 3 tours of the vaults really fascinating highly reccommend doing 1 when you visit. We met our guide on the royal mile and she told us a few stories before heading down into the vaults. It was lit up by candle light really gave you a feel of what it must of been like when they were in use. If i remember rightly some of the vaults were also used for witch craft.
Veryyyyy informative
Thanks Tony for sharing this piece of Edinbrugh's history with us. It was very interesting and fun to see you explaining all of this. Btw, it was crystal to me after I rewatched the video at least 3 times lol.. just kidding!!! 😁😁
Salem MA downtown to the wharf has many subterrranean tunnels when it was a major US maritime port.
Edinburgh really is a fascinating city. Can't think of another city in the UK quite like it.
Hi loving the videos, recommendations for the best tour to see the vaults ?
Very interesting.
Me and my partner were just talking about theses the other day also spent a few nights in one of them vaults aka hive night club
Also thanks for the advice on twitter then other night
Don’t forget the shops on Market Street...current use of the vaults. I think some of the shops on Victoria are built up against and maybe in vaults too.
Excellent account of the vaults. I’m a tour guide for Auld Reekie Tours, which as you mentioned goes into the vaults. I watch all your videos and despite being a tour guide for years I always learn something new. Thanks for the publicity, come and visit us again sometime 👻💀🧙🏻♀️🕷
Hello puppy!😃👍👍♥️🐶🐶🐶🐶♥️
Would this also apply to the arches on Market Street, Tony..
I always visit Edinburgh when studied in Aberdeen
and I never realized there is a huge underground story in it
especially when walking around South Bridge
and I didn't know why the street named as bridge when I couldn't see the bridge
And I rarely explore the oldtown beyond Royal Mile and Edinburgh Uni
What a waste...
Thanks for sharing to enrich my knowledge on the Scottish Capital.
The vaults are very spooky, there's a demonic stone circle there
When we visited, it seemed like all the tours of the vaults were scary houses. Maybe because we were there too close to Halloween. But we passed on a tour with 2 littles with us. We don’t like scary stuff, but I would love to tour it on next trip. We’ve toured the underground city in Seattle years ago. It was ok.
We did a walking tour, that included the vaults, in 2019. It was an evening tour so it did include Greyfriars Kirkyard and a few ghost stories but wasn’t particularly scary (but depending on the ages of the children, I can see how it could be creepy). I think going earlier in the day would make it better; we went in the evening. The tour was fascinating but we did get creeped out while touring the vaults. While down there we started hearing voices and our guide seemed genuinely alarmed because no one else was supposed to be down there. Turns out another group was ahead of schedule because some of the streets were closed due to the filming of Fast and the Furious 9. So, they came down and “ambushed” us. I can definitely say, 100% though, the vaults are not a place that I’d want to go by myself- I got a little claustrophobic 😂
Really confused 🤔 research will help me. Thanks
So are the opium dens closed then?
How go get to exit through the gift shop?
This is no longer running.
I do recall hearing a story of a street being closed off due to plague and a child was locked in and died...haunting the place still with their babydoll that was left with her. 🤔
That’s Mary kings close.
There's obviously no water, under the South bridge?
How about videos of castles nearby Edinburgh like culzean or Falkland palace or videos of Glasgow?
Once we are out of lockdown I hopefully will. Don’t really know much about Glasgow, but might start to explore there..... if we are ever allowed to go there again.
You might enjoy this one.

Cheers tony
is Bannermans music room in a vault?
Yes, it is. Although I myself have not been in it since the 80's, I don't think it's changed that much!
Merlin steals all attention and our hearts :)
One of these days..... 🪣 list
Norfolk terrier?
Border terrier.
