Finding the a new band member is never about finding the absolute best player, it's about finding someone you know you can get along with.
Don't forget that this is the very first audition video they got. With a bit more time it would have been even better. Some guys also included backing tracks in their videos before uploading it to CZcams which makes it sound better to your ears even if the playing might not be. It's easy to record a video, being interviewed by Wintersun and playing while they're watching you is not. Let alone performing with them on stage. Asim is very experienced and apparently his playing in person was the best out of all applicants. I don't know why you'd even question the band's judgement. Jari and Teemu are guitar masters and especially Jari is the definition of a perfectionist. If they think he's the best, he is.
His pick control and emotion for the music is what sets him apart from the others IMO
And this is why auditions should be an internal process - because people will bitch whoever they pick.
I'm sure Jari knew best. Saw Wintersun live 2 years ago and Asim and Teemu were fantastic as was Jari. One of the best live performances I've seen in 33 years.

I actually think Garrett Peters' and Lassi Tiainen's audition videos were better. But I think it all came down to the actual auditions and Asim's playing sounds amazingly tight on the interview videos, and he seems like an awesome guy, so I'm not complaining!
ToastedCigar and Asim singing must have been great addition as well. Also their personalities seem to synch pretty well

Being a good fit in a band is so much more than just having the skill to do it. In an average professional band, you'll probably be spending more than half of your time wth each other, so if you just have the skills but you are an ass, then you're not going to stay long in the band. The same if your vision for the music is completely different. If the others want to do black metal and you want to do power metal, it's not going to go well :)
Also Garett Peters said in his audition that he wasn't planning on winning anyways since he's not living in Finland and is not planning on moving there for the band. don't get me wrong tough, I think Garett plays amazing!

There's something about his pick attack, that keeps me coming back to this video. The "chik- chugga-chugga-chik-chik-chuk-chik" sounds of his smooth picking, are very entertaining to listen to. I've seen all the other submitted audition tapes only ONCE. This guy had a nuanced little something extra to his playing. A certain consistency to his sound, that goes beyond just trying to hit all the notes cleanly.
It's the same thing that makes Teemu's playing sound really special to my ears. I wonder if Jari felt the same way when he heard him. I still think Teemu is far superior overall. But I can see that Asim has put alot of thought into his playing.

I love the feeling and emotion you put into the playing which is a difference in the other auditions I saw.
He used to take guitar lessons from Teemu. I'm sure it had something to do with the choice. I mean, it's far easier to evaluate someone's performance in that setting than in these videos where it's rather easy to overdub your mistakes.
tbh when i first heard this i was like ''you picked this guy?'' but i hear you playing live in the netherlands and also on YT and i am impressed he fits really well
Good thing about this video is that you hear without any filter or anything what his real playing is like... GREAT! countless people will criticize but I bet none of them are even close to the skill Asim has. Just try to make the solos and riffs that he is doing and make them sound as clean as they are sounding on this video, it requires skills and a lot of practice to do that, not sitting around and giving opinions. And for the people who are wondering why his playing on the interview sounds "better" than in the audition video well, on the interviews they actually recorded and processed the guitar sound, every metal recording does... and you want to know why it sounds so great on the interviews, well is because Asim's skills, he is accurate and clean which makes the recording process way more easier and faster. Asim is not messing around, The guy is a great addition to the band.

I was really impressed by Lassi Tiainen too, although I think they made a fantastic choice. Asim's life story until he got the position of Wintersun's guitar player is inspirational, almost out of a Law of Attraction movie - He should feacture in the next "the secret" movie.
To me this audition doesn't sound the best compared to some others if you compare the covers of wintersun riffs and sweeps... but he can clearly play them amazingly as we saw him do it on the interview. Also his improvisations and other things he threw in just for fun sound really cool and he shreds like crazy.
On top of that (if i understood correctly) they've know each other for quite some time now which is probably quite a big plus because they know what he's like and if they could spend whole months with him when touring.
And on top of everything he can sing and has experience with being in a band and playing live so i can see why they picked him even though his audition takes didn't sound the best compared to some others.
He may not be the best guitar player to apply but he's probably the best choice. He's tight in his playing, he's a hell of a good vocalist that can expand the Wintersun sound if needed, and he's already got a good following that may bring in more fans...I'm still going to miss Jari on guitar while he sings. Its what made him one of my biggest musical heros.

Fat yet sharp like sawblade! i wonder what amp did he used! it is so difficult to play on Tube amps like that and i think he dont even have additional distortion pedals or compressors to help him play. hes relaxed and he show that he knows the instrument well!

Look. Yeah there were equally good players to Asim auditioning but its not only about that. They chose the best players and then they sat down with them and TALKED ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN AND CANT DO FOR THE BAND BESIDES THEIR PLAYING
Is it me or he was playing a bunch of random stuff from like 1:45 onward? what the heck was that stuff? hahaha. Didn't seem bad though and he totally nailed the Time sweeps and the other Wintersun riffs. They picked someone really good.

Please guys! Understand! They didn't choose him cuz he plays well...everybody can play as Wintersun...I see you guys talking about Garret Petters and stuffs. You need to know they choose a guy with a huge musician experience! And not just cuz he can play Wintersun songs...They choose the right guy for this job. Asim is a great musician. He can sing and play guitar pretty well, he had a lot of good bands, he can speak Finnish and he is a great musician. So do not think they choose him just cuz he can play Wintersun songs...everybody can play that...But they wanted someone else besides this.

I think hes vocals had a major role in getting him the gig! Hes pretty freaking awesome! mistakes happen. im sure he will be flawless on stage! Wintersun know what they're doing!

About choice of band members, I always think of a Motorhead audition I once watched and what Lemmi said about it (roughly): "They are all great at playing the guitar, but in the end it's about spending months in a tour bus with them." So during the audition he didn't even listen to them play, they were only drinking beer together. Or so goes the legend.
And then, I recently was lucky to see Wintersun live. I don't know if Asim is the greatest ever, but certainly awesome enough ...
Audition wise i still prefer Garret's.
But during the interview Asim showed he knows his shit very well.

Garrett Peters is actually quite a bit cleaner than this guy. I thought for sure no one else could've played the samples cleaner and I guess I was right. No hate on Asim tho he's a monster as well.

Well we don't know. :D It's the unedited and uncut version. Probably he rearranged and cut some parts of his extra stuff for the video he sent them.

tbh i wouldn't have it any other way. the man's a fucking genius ^^ they're all awesome though, i'm looking forward to seeing asim with them in finland this summer

I'm not saying he was better, I just enjoyed his recording more and expected a better audition from the chosen one. If you take into account all aspects of being a musician (which I'm sure Wintersun did) Asim is probably better.

When watching the interview videos, personally he immediately stuck me as coming across as perhaps a not very genuine person and also arrogant.. his body language, what he said and the way he said it just gives me that impression. Of course, it's possible he's just being kind of false for the sake of the interview, as in he's saying what he thinks they want to hear which makes him feel false to me, and also that perhaps he's purposely trying to act confident for the interview and comes across as over confident, but I don't know.
I wasn't aware of the search for a new guitarist and that people had submitted auditions until after it was over as I don't use Facebook if I can help it, but from what Asim said in his auditions, I also can't help but think that maybe the other guys who auditioned didn't have much of a chance.. it sounds like he pushed his way into contact with them, then given that he became friends with Teemu and having already known them for a while, I feel like that may have boosted his chances a fair bit and elevated him over perhaps more talented people just because they already knew him. Then again, I guess this way if they do know him quite well there's hopefully some security that they'll get on with and work with him well which is of course a requirement that also needs to be filled and he should meet. The comments I've read about him being fired from another band for being unreliable and creating drama among other points make me somewhat wary of him though, but hopefully everything will be fine!
Also, I'm saying this in reply to your comment because I didn't much care for the idea of picking him apart and being all negative in the sea of 'wow, he's amazing!' sort of people in the comments of those videos heh. I'm not really one for putting my opinions up in a publicly visible place, but it's just the opinion of one person so it should count for little anyway :D my first impressions of him could be completely wrong anyway, it's just how he comes across to me unfortunately :/
