    Thank you so much for this,it was so entertaining and interesting. I think the Bolshoi was my favourite as it is the version I would most like to see within a ballet. I found the dancers' mesmerising synchronisation every bit as fascinating as the acrobatic version. The NYCB solo was also amazing but maybe a bit too different for me to imagine it as part of a whole ballet. At first the clearly Indian rather than Arabian movements of the Bolshoi version jarred with me, but soon this was overtaken by wholehearted enthusiasm for their brilliant precision. Best ten minutes I've spent this week!

      You know, firstly this dance was Indian, and then was renamed to Arabian. But still in many renditions we can see it Indian basis in choreography, costumes and scent.
      NYC rendition was beautiful and the most arabic - belly-dance like - but too "adult" for Christmas fairytale.

    Of my years in listening to and watching the suite, it's the Arabian Dance that I love to see. It has an "adult" look and feel for me. However, not every dance company incorporates this dance. Each option offered here was a good interpretation, but the last dance was the closest to what I prefer to see.

    The Arabian dance is one of my favorite pieces of music from the ballet but there are few choreographers who’ve been able to come up with choreography that truly embodies the music. A major exception, I think, is the choreography from Nutcracker the Motion Picture (1980s, Pacific Northwest Ballet) where it is danced as a solo by a peacock. I think that choreography really illustrates the beauty and even melancholy of Tchaikovsky’s music.

  • @beckasmith6725

    Not particularly impressed with Bolshoi or NYCB; Bolshoi was all lines and angles, when the music flows. It didn't seem like NYCB was dancing to the same music at all. I'd never heard of the last company, but their choreography matched the music wonderfully. They were athletic yet graceful.

      В классической постановке Григоровича это называется Индийский танец, точнее Танец индийских кукол. В России это общеизвестный факт, поскольку, помимо Большого, очень много российских театров используют именно эту версию. Странно, что автор не указала на это, введя в заблуждение недалекую публику, которая не в состоянии критически осмыслить полученную информацию.

    Bravi e complimenti a DanceLine Ballet per averci fatto amare e apprezzare tanti Belletti: opere d'arte! Bellissima danza! Il sincronismo, la bellezza e l'armonia dei movimenti dei due Pas de Deux sono un incanto che non vorresti mai finissero e riesci a entrare in armonia con essi. The Arabian Dance is my faaavourite!! And Bolshoi hits the spot perfectly! And there's also Mariinsky Theatre's variation with the ladies and i love that version so much! Every year i watch Mariinsky and Russian State Ballet's Nutcracker, but sadly, not most theatres do the Arabian/Chinese dance and i've only ever seen 1 theatre do the Nutcracker ending where Clara and the Prince actually meet at the end. Needless to say, Nutcracker holds a very special place in my heart~ ♥

    In the Bolshoi version, you can clearly tell that most of the dance is Indian rather than Arabian (as an Indian myself). You can even see the Arabian princess wearing a Bindi, which is often worn by Hindu women in India. It is ultimately a huge cultural symbol and a bit offensive to viewers who are part of the culture. Edit: I’m not saying the dance is bad, I’m saying I’m a bit offended by the way my culture was represented.

    • @dzenjer
      @dzenjer Před 6 měsíci +15

      There is no mistake here, it's just that in 1966 Viktor Grigorovich, the chief choreographer of the Bolshoi Theater, staged his vision of Oriental Dance, it's even called the dance of Indian dolls. Since then, this dance has been staged exactly like this - with Indian motifs. This is a feature of the production of only the Bolshoi Theater, and classical Arabic dance is still being staged at the Mariinsky Theater. By the way, the Georgian lullaby "Iavnana" served as the basis for Oriental dance music.

  • @robstockton2463

    - The Bolshoi’s choreography is the most interesting, but it feels like it would work better as a solo. The man’s extensions are never going to match the woman’s, and their unison is off throughout…they’re not feeling the music in the same way. (Not very Bolshoi!)
    - City Ballet’s Arabian has always been a bit characterless, maybe that’s why it’s “Coffee” rather than “Arabian”. Let’s face it, the Nutcracker isn’t Balanchine’s best work. This dance is strangely generic…like it could be dropped into any ballet with any music.
    - AcroDuo dancers are beautiful, but it’s just a series of tricks - nothing much to the choreography - with the audience dutifully applauding after each stunt. This one to me is Cirque…trick-applause, trick-applause, trick-applause. Yawn.

    One of my least favorite parts of big ballet companies is that in the nutcracker all the sweets are just a man and women pair and it can get boring. I do a nutcracker with a prof company but they have students dance with professionals and in the arabian dance there is a man and women but there is also 4 older student dancers that add a little more to the scene and thats similar with all of our other sweets

    The great Teresa Reichlen of NYCB gets my vote. She was a phenomenal dancer and brought her sinuous line and agility to this version of Arabian. The Mariinsky version with Ekaterina Kondaurova is stupendous too. I like the Bolshoi version but as others have said, it seems less Arabian or "coffee" than Indian. I don't like acrobatic ballet so the last one didn't appeal.
