Hocus Pocus is a lot of fun to watch and we're really glad we got the chance to revisit it for a movie commentary video. It's corny, campy and beautiful with awesomely over the top performances from Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker!

Also the film is well done in many ways
for example, its never stated but clear if you look for it
each of the sisters powers/abilities is designed to trap children
Mary can literally smell/sniff out kids, Sarah can lure/hypnotize them with her voice, and Winifred has the magic Knowledge to drain your life energy.

"museum shut down to lack of tourism" - This is set in Salem, Massachusetts, guys. Even the most boring and dull spots in Salem that have any significance to witch hunts make practically their entire year's operating costs during the Fall, but in October especially, from tourists. A witch museum with actual occult-related items would KILL there. Forever. I'd honestly recommend going if we ever return to normal.

I went in early October with some friends on a special mid-week trip and you got the Autumn aesthetic and Halloween excitement with quieter streets. If you go out of the season though it's also still really really nice! I lived within 20 minutes of Salem while in college and visited often. The town is very walkable and full of really cool small businesses, beautiful architecture, small beaches because you're surrounded by water right on the coast, and the people are really kind. Definitely recommend!

To explain why Winnie goes after Dani rather than using another kid is because when Dani called her "the ugliest thing". Winnie's fatal flaw is her vanity. The reason she turns Thackery into a cat (therefore leaving him alive and able to help stop her) is because he calls her a hag. She's so determined to boost her own ego that she throws herself into punishing people who've struck a nerve by insulting her. Unfortunately it distracts her from her goal and ends up being her downfall.

15:39 As a girl her age-ish in the late 80's early 90's... I never saw or experienced older/teenage boys picking on little kids. However, sometimes if a parent wasn't nearby during trick-or-treating an older kid might steal your candy... but that was more like a purse-snatching. They'd come out from behind a bush, swipe your bag from your hands and run like hell. That happened to my older brother.

That’s the best part of the movie, rewatching and learning new stuff
for example the beginning where the guy drops the book, it wasn’t a mistake, the sisters made the verbal cues because they knew people would cover their ears, meaning the guy holding the book would have to drop it, so they could incite their spell.
it was planned, that’s how clever Winifred is.
And the reason the witches didn’t die when they burned them, was that the black flame candle was still lit, and until it dies they cannot fully die.
Also the witches are from the 1600’s, they have no idea what pavement is, or indoor plumbing, sprinkler systems, and or car headlights
that’s part of the charm of the film is the reason the heroes can get away from them so often is becasue the modern world is scary and foreign to them, easily allowing them to be tricked.

I grew up in New England and was Dani's age in the early 90s, so to address the Teenagers Harassing Kids Question: for most kids, teenagers have *awesome* power on Halloween (as they are either intimidatingly awesome or terrifying). The goal as I recall it when younger was to get trick or treating done and be back at home BEFORE the ~Bad Teens went out and about to engage in the looting of candy, smashing of pumpkins, toilet papering of trees, and general mischief. It'd be rare for older teens to just harass a little kid on a busy street right in front of someone's house, but I can see it being happening if there were fewer people around and they had some shitty half-costumes/masks on, so they could at least have a shot at bolting unrecognized while harassing a kid because they hate the older brother. YOUTHS! PS LOVE THIS REACTION! (And esp. Stef's commentary on the cop costume)

Have family in New England, it was the best Halloween ever. To add to your comment: I live near Detroit, MI in the Midwest. Don't know about bullies b/c a parent always took us trick or treating but for sure there were 8 yr olds out by themselves. Did see some homes the next day toilet papered, egged or smashed pumpkins. Don't know if that still happens. The night before Halloween in Detroit they would just light abandoned homes, cars and other shit on fire. It was a tradition for decades (Devil's Night) and some teens tried in my city for a couple years but that was short lived, thankfully😅

In Burlington Vermont, the night before Halloween was called Cabbage Night, because traditionally people threw cabbages through people's glass windows. My first Cabbage Night, local parents had their kids slash the tires of enemy neighbors. So everyone parked their cars in the back yard. Route 15 was littered with burning tires. By the time I left Vermont, things had settled down, and I, for one, was thankful.

So jealous of Americans getting to go all out for Halloween. It's just not as big a deal in Australia. It's kind of just an excuse for the occasional group of teenagers to dress up (more slutty than creative, to be honest), and drink. America has awesome holidays. We do Christmas and, to a lesser extent, Easter (and most people do something on Australia Day), though Americans do Christmas (and *really* go all out), Halloween, Thanksgiving, 4th of July etc.
      So jelly.

My favorite behind the scenes fact about this movie comes from a Bette Midler interview. The host asked her why she took the role of Winnifred Sanderson and she said (note: I’m paraphrasing her quote because I can’t recall the exact wording.) “I wanted a movie where I could bring my daughter with me to work. A movie she could watch with me, see her mother. Most of my movies are not appropriate for kids. I wanted at least one that was.” So Bette’s idea of a great mother-daughter movie is a story about 3 witches who kill kids to gain youth and the main witch spends the movie obsessed with killing the little girl. I love that logic.
I adore this movie. It’s a Halloween staple in my house. Along with a Nightmare on Elm Street marathon (New Nightmare is the BEST), the Addams Family movies, and Bride of Chucky.
We definitely go all out for the holiday in the USA; you’re right. Growing up, my family never decorated for Halloween because my mother couldn’t handle gore and scary stuff. But the rest of the neighborhood went crazy. Especially this one house with this huge corner lot where the family would set up horror vignettes with living characters. They had the Phantom of the Opera playing his organ, and it would swing out when he crescendoed. And a copse of trees housed the Wolfman who would howl and lunge. Dracula would give you candy if you were brave enough to make it past the open coffin with a movie serial killer (usually Freddy Kruger or Michael Myers, once it was Jason) I loved that house!
When I get a big yard, I’ll BE that house. For now I just decorate the inside and get insanely creative with the Halloween meal.

Military Brat here, child of 90s. Yes, as a little girl of 9 years old, a pack of fellow military brat boys would chase me down and beat me almost daily in 4th grade. We were in another country, and my single mom wouldn't know I'd clean myself up before she got home. Oddly enough, we moved to another base in the same country the following year, and one of those boys later became my friend, as his dad transferred, too. He was also bullied in the peer pressure sort of way, to beat me up. But yes, packs of boys will beat a little girl bloody, when adults are looking away.

Edit: Sam Raimi actually produced the new evil dead. He said in his mind he imagined evil dead to be a brutal horror but in his words they were “broke and inexperienced.” Tho the original trilogy is fantastic, I really appreciate the remake. You can see the polish Raimi style, and him finally being able to make his evil dead vision, while never talking down about the original trilogy.

Winifreds curse is her obsession with her own vanity, that’s why she sold her soul to the devil and steals children’s life force, to help keep herself young and beautiful.
that’s why she wanted Dannie even though they had lots of other kids, because Danni insulted her vanity.
and in the end that was winifred’s undoing.
the whole point is that her character flaws are the motivation for her curse and her own destruction.
it bugs me when people always ask why people don’t act 100% logical all the time, as if that’s how any human being has ever lived (surprise, no one ever has)
and it makes even more sense with villains whose entire character/moral failings and flaws are what creates and often then destroys them in the end.

During DST, we roll the clocks back by an hour, meaning sunrise comes earlier again, around 6:30-ish. HOWEVER, DST happens the weekend AFTER Halloween, even though the daylight has begun to change. There's a sketch from when they were planning the movie showing Thackery finding one under Emily's pillow and of the sisters making them in modern times. And in the trailer we see a scene of the sisters in the supermarket buying the ingredients (using a barbecue instead of a cauldron or fire) and Mary snacking on baby oil, and we see them handing them out to the kids (those scenes were never fully released as deleted scenes on the dvd. CZcams Pattycake Productions created a video of it last year (they do a hocus pocus tribute video nearly every halloween) as a tribute.
