Tornado in Willmar, July 11th, 2008

- This is a video I shot standing in my front yard, on the 11th of July, 2008.
It is also the source from which I took the 1min 14secs worth of footage from and gave to one of our local news channels (FOX) KMSP Channel 9 out of Mpls, MN.
It was Broadcast on Local FOX News 6 times that evening.
This is shot with A Canon Powershot SD750 Digital Elph (Still Camera) in movie mode.
I am standing in my front yard for most of the video.
I met one of my neighbors by actually going to her house during a tornado threat. I recently moved here(Northeast Alabama). She invited me to come via other neighbors I had met, who already go to her house for safety. She is in her late 90's, and probably won't be with us much longer. Sweet lady. Only one in the area who has a basement, that I know of. I plan to build a shelter of my own in the future, big enough to hold my neighbors, even if we have to squeeze in. (hopefully we'll have masks, if Covid doesn't go away)
I wouldn't worry about "wearing masks to stop a virus".......ANY virus. I mean no disrespect whatsoever, but I bought a book about this whole "covid 19" AGENDA. This book is chock full of interviews with nothing but virologists, molecular biologists, etc, and every one of them can be verified. But the corrupt world powers and the media will NOT allow you to see these people speak on "the evening news" or any tv show for that matter. One of them stated: "Wearing a mask is like building a chain link fence to keep mosquitoes out". He continued with this explanation: The size of each opening in chain link fence compared to a tiny mosquito is a good illustration for how much tinier the microbes are for ANY virus compared to the weave in a surgical mask. Here's another example: If a person puts on tight fitting thermal underwear PLUS a pair of tight fitting bluejeans over that.......and then passes some really nasty gas........can people in the same room still smell it. OF COURSE THEY CAN, because the particles of the offending smell are much tinier than all of the weave in both articles of clothing. So "wearing 2 masks" won't help either. A friend of mine who is an RN, brought over a box of surgical masks months ago, and showed us a warning label on the box that stated: "NOT designed or intended to stop the spread of viruses". Surgical masks are designed for 1 purpose: To keep a surgeon and his team from projecting spittle INTO a patient during a surgical procedure. A surgeon and his team HAVE TO communicate with each other during any surgical procedure........speaking to one another. When we speak, we sometimes accidentally project spittle. PS........covid 19 is a real MAN-MADE virus ( only the elderly and people who are deathly ill to begin with are under threat of this virus, like any other virus ) for the plan of trying to force the entire population into taking their wicked, nasty "vaccines". And don't think there won't be more of these engineered viruses in the future, because there absolutely will be. They are literally trying to destroy the DNA of mankind. Food for thought, and it's A FACT: Before the very 1st vaccine, which was for polio, cancer was EXTREMELY rare in humans. Today in America alone, anywhere between 2,000 and 3,000 people die of cancer EVERY SINGLE DAY. That's 60 to 90 THOUSAND Americans dying every month from some form of cancer. Look it up. So where is the "pandemic" in that? THERE IS NONE.......because everything is going as planned. Believe on Jesus Christ as your Lord & Savior.
@@howabouthetruth2157 Yeah, I posted that 11 months ago, when the virus was just getting started. I had no mask then, because I couldn't find one. I ordered some online. By the time they arrived, I already had the virus. I got pretty sick, like I do with any virus I catch, but I recovered. I must admit, I did have some lasting side effects, but they seem to be clearing up pretty good. I'm an older woman with some pretty serious health issues. It was supposed to kill me, had my body just listened to the experts. I only wear a mask when it is absolutely required, like at the Dr office or the likes. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area of the country where folks live and let live. I don't get harassed at the grocery. Mask wearers don't seem to be bothered that I or other folks aren't wearing them. I know a number of folks who have caught the virus. But none I know have died. And many of them were also those it was supposed to kill. Makes me wonder what really killed the people who died from it.
I wonder if you've built that shelter? If not, I believe you can get kits. I also believe you can receive a pretty good tax break from Uncle Sam. Good luck! I live in a condo, and it's not as safe as having a home with a basement-shelter, and I don't know if the only room, (a bathroom without windows), is still safe enough. The building is on a slope, and the crawl space is, of course, not safe. The only place we can go is possibly the Chamblee library here in the greater Atlanta area nearby less than a half a mile away.
I love how they're so distracted by the tornado that it takes them awhile to figure out that they're neighbors but haven't actually met. Kind of adorable.

At about 3:35 into the clip, the droning of the two sirens begin to harmonize at different pitches...quite beautiful. Excellent footage also!

My heart goes out to you folks in the midwest that have to deal with these storm.
I suspect they did the best they could with the sirens given the fact there were no spotters in place. And the re-sounding of the sirens is excellent. People need to know to stay in their safe place. A few months ago I was napping on a Sunday afternoon and her the word "tornado" in my bedroom. I thought i was having a supernatural experience! So I got up and went outside and everything was green and our village siren went off. The voice I heard had come from my cell phone. I live in the Chicago suburbs and the media followed the tornado as he sailed above suburbs heading east for the city. It was such an excellent example of effective warning. The tornado finally came to ground not on ground but Lake Michigan and a friend has video of it.
Here, they leave them running until the danger is fully past. As in, as long as a tornado is formed, they're sounding. We know it's safe when they shut off.
Tornado was on the ground before the sirens went off.

never seen a funnel cloud tornado only seen severe thunderstorms like 5 . But yes they are beautiful
I lost my friend and my mom to the f5 in OK and I still can hear those sounds of screaming and wind to this day

Great footage. I like how it appears the sirens are what made the tornado strengthen (the timeliness was impeccable).
I was there that day. as we were coming into wilmar to eat I told my husband "holy sh!t there is a funnel" much to my dismay he said no and we kept on going. lol the moment we walked into the restaurant the sirens went off. What a rush!

Strange that it took so long for the sirens to go on. The Twin Cities area is usually quick to point out bad weather before it approaches. Someone must have been asleep at the controls!
Today's sirens can be activated remotely. But in smaller municipalities, the sirens may still have to be activated manually by someone in the police or fire station. So the tornado has to be confirmed and someone in authority has to activate them. And that takes time.
I grew up in Minnesota and well remember the 1965 Twin Cities tornado outbreak. You don't know how lucky you are--poorer states don't have siren warning systems. I was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi, where there were NO warning sirens. If you happened to have the TV or radio on, you'd hear about threatening weather. Otherwise, you had no warning whatsoever. That's when I got cable TV so I could get The Weather Channel.
One of the best tornado videos on the tube! 10 yrs ago I was going to visit a friend 30 miles from where I live. Skies were dark to the Northwest. There were no warnings at the time. 2 miles down the road I drove into the path of a tornado just as it was coming out of the wall cloud. Looked very similar to the one in the video. Then the warnings came on radio just as it was touching down and debris started flying. Scared the crap out of me! It was rated an F2 and did quite a bit of damage.
Grew up in Stewartville MN, just south of Rochester... its interesting to note that the Mayo Clinic got its start after an F5 tornado came through the area as well as a f2 and 3 I believe. I love storm chasing and always felt like we got really good storms but never had tornadoes, and I feel like that is the outlook for many when they think of Minnesota. In reality Minnesota gets the same amount of bad weather everywhere else. keep filming guys, but be safe!

I've always had a obsession of seeing tornadoes forming and all sorts of things at a young age but never have came across something like this! I'm so glad you recorded this. Also heres a tip, if the tornado looks like its moving, its moving away from you and if it does not look like its moving, its heading towards you:)
I remember this like it was yesterday. I lived in Willmar at this time and worked in a group home in that neighborhood. I got the clients in the basement. All we’re safe.

+Haley Buitron Ya i kinda noticed this to after i read your comment! Ill have to watch 2016 vids next fall and see if this trend is still there! Funnel cloud should be enough to set them off. Even a swirling storm would give alot more advance warning for people to seek shelter!
Actually, most places require their sirens set off multiple sirens during a warning. Usually in videos it's not the first time they've gone off, This one applies.
In Willmar MN and in most places a funnel is automatic grounds for siren activation with no question. But they don't sound until a report is made and then it still takes 30 seconds for them to sound. I'm pretty sure they had already sounded once for 3 mins before this video started

I agree with the last person-this is one of the best tornado videos I've seen. I live on the north side of Willmar and watched this tornado. It was 4 miles away from me and I could still hear it when the sirens weren't going off.
SUPERB!!! I felt like I was standing right next to you guys watcing this thing and hearing that siren! I live in the Twin Cities where it's not as easy to see a funnel. In Willmar, you seemed to have the perfect vantage point, what with the flat land in a more rural area with fewer trees. I suppose when the second round of sirens went off, is was the "all clear" since the tornado was roping out at the time?

As a storm chaser, you cannot tell how strong a tornado is by it's size. I've seen tornadoes 1/2 mile wide that did EF-1 damage and some that are 300 yards wide and do EF-4 damage. A good example is the Paris, Texas tornado.
It's rare for a home video to catch a tornado from birth to death. Very nice catch.

Only tornado I remember in my hometown was around 2003. I was living in Tiffin, Ohio at the time at my grandmother's house. It was somewhere around October or early November, and we just got this really cool safe, so me, my brother and my uncle were playing with it. We heard the sirens go off, and we found out that there was a tornado really close to Tiffin city limits. Thankfully, it didn't come into city limits.
I remember a few times tornadoes came close to us, I just have yet to see one.

Crazy, I was actually biking across country and passed near here (Clara City) about 3 days before this. On the 11th I was just over the line in South Dakota and that night I remember watching the insane storms across the prairies back in Minnesota.

no matter how many times you hear it, that siren is eerie.
I've only seen this one other time. It was a water spout off VA Beach back in 2007. It literally sat there for a good 20mins or so and churned like a washing machine. It didn't move hardly a few yards until it finally dissolved away and disappeared into the clouds, craziest thing. But to see it on land with a tornado is freaky.

how does the sirens work do they start as soon as the funnel hits the ground or when a funnel drops out of the cloud and keeps going until the funnel is off the ground?

I think they sound quite nice together (at least when you're a siren enthusiast). To me, the sirens sound like music rather than unsettling but sirens are supposed to get your attention so that's why they sound quite eerie and unsettling.

Cool vid. I showed it to my boys (they're born and raised in New Hampshire) to show them the dichotomy of weather...ie: tornado, sunshine, thunder. I was born and raised in Nebraska and it's been hard to explain it to them, easier to show them. Did that end up being a F2? It looks like it got bigger there for a while.
Heather H Yes, if memory serves, it did indeed end up an F2. Luckily it ended up just skirting the south end of town, a few turkey barns were leveled but it could have been much worse if it we're just a mile or so north of where it ended up.
Hint: if a tornado doesn't really appear to be moving, it is heading directly to/from you, if it is getting larger-it is coming to you.

There is 2 tornado sirens being heard. The lower pitch one is a Thunderbolt 1000 and the higher pitch one is a 2001 SRNB I believe.

i grew up in Litchfield,have family in Willmar,Benson,the whole area,worked at BNSF and brought trains into Willmar and that by far as to be one of those moments I wished I wouldve been in town,my brother was in Clara City while this was going on.

Actually, its a thunderbolt 1000 with a 5M blower! Its since been replaced with a 2001-130.

I heard that it damaged a farm equipment store, a mobile home dealership and some homes. It was an F3 and it injured 2 people.
