  • The anthem of Belgium is the composition La Brabançonne / De Brabançonne (Brabanconne). There is an official text in French, Dutch and German.
The text of the anthem was written in September 1830 by the young French revolutionary Genneval, who read it for the first time in the Brussels cafe "Aigle d'Or". Genneval's real name was Louis Alexandre Deshais, he was an actor in the Brussels theater La Monnaie, where the Belgian revolution began in August 1830. Genneval died on October 18 of the same year during the war of independence.
The music for the anthem was written in September 1830 by François Van Campenhout, a former conductor at the same theatre.
The anthem received official status in 1860, after the then Prime Minister of Belgium removed from the lyrics of the song too sharp attacks on the Netherlands. At present, only the first couplet from Genneval's text is the official version of the anthem, the rest of the text is written by Charles Roger.
