A case study, to get one tool/weapon out of 4 to protect your house from zombies. Soviet Sapper Spade, Cold Steel Special Forces, New Russian Ratnik Spade, A Shovel from Hardware store. :)
I have both the Cold Steel shovel and a 1988 Soviet MPL-50 that as far as I can tell is original. I like them both, but I find the Soviet shovel to be a bit easier to use because of its lighter weight. I'm thinking of getting a Ratnik shovel now that I've seen this video, as it appears to be lighter than the CS version, yet harder than the original saperka. Thanks for posting this.
I'm impressed by it. It's the same basic dimensions as the MPL-50, but the steel is noticeably thicker and harder. There's less blade area due to the sharper point, so it's lighter than the Cold Steel version but a little heavier than the MPL-50. The socket is welded instead of riveted. It moves earth nicely despite the reduced blade surface. I don't have any training in Sistema, but I would imagine this would be better for a fighting shovel due to the harder steel and sharper point.
The newer handles on CS are hickory I also hate the varnish on them but a few mins with sand paper takes care of that I have a newer larger version they call the trench shovel and highly recommend it.
its funny - first cold steel copied the Russian shovel and made it better by welding the back then the Russians new shovel copied cold steel and welded the back also - weird how things play out

Doug Parkhurst Thank you Doug for your great comment!
Thank you Doug, let us know what is your impression from a Ratnik shovel when you get it.

They say they are hickory. Not when I bought mine 3 months. My POS handle broke after 8 chops
Where did you get the one you preferred? I'm looking for on myself. Edit, I found a Ratnik on Etsy and I'm getting it shipped to me ASAP.
