    Ladies and gentlemen, this is a small Swamp Cooler!
    Swamp coolers only work in dry climates. We have one in the SoCal desert and use it in addition to our two ACs. It works great here when days are sometimes 110 degrees, but don’t expect it to work in humid conditions.

      That's right. Here in Phoenix we've had Swamp Coolers for many decades. If you can wet the cooler pads then put them in the freezer of course itll be very cold but that's just using your freezer as an airconditioner. The goofy guy in the video doesn't even need an AC. You have to live in a place where it's over 110F to understand. This little box will melt in Phoenix.

  • @JamesDavidWalley
    @JamesDavidWalley Před 4 lety +103

    Coolers like this work according to two principles: simple airflow (the fan) and evaporative cooling (passing the airflow through a damp filter). Each can give a separate subjective sense of cooling, depending on the conditions.
    In this case, you were already in a room at standard "room temperature," so just moving more air faster will give you a sense of coolness. Therefore, the unit with the more powerful fan will seem to cool well, even if it doesn’t do much to drop the temperature (as the Ultra didn’t seem to be doing by more than a couple of degrees). Frankly, a strong table fan with a larger surface area of the blades and a more-powerful motor would probably seem to do an even better job. But, when you're in an overheated room (say, over 80 degrees), the roles get reversed. A stronger fan will simply push more hot, uncomfortable air at a higher speed. In that case, the cooler with the stronger evaporative cooling may seem to work better, as it will actually drop the temperature of the air it’s pushing out.
    It's a shame you couldn’t have conducted these tests in a really hot room, which is probably where most people will be using this. Based on the size of the filters (and, thus, the evaporative capacity), I'm guessing the original would do a better job, even if you had to have it only a foot or so away.

    The thing with evaporative coolers is that the air needs to be hot and dry to start with. If your ambient humidity goes above 15 or 20%, they don't work well at all. I have a large one on top of my house and here in the southwest U.S., where the air is pretty dry (usually 12-18% humidity), I can keep the inside in the mid-70's even when it's 95+ outside!😉

    Just a quick thought and I might be wrong. The IR thermometer might be measuring the temperature of the blades not the air. This means that if the material absorbs the cold then it is lost from the air being blown out because some materiasl absorb temperature better than others. This might be why the temperature registers as warmer in the new model. Doesn't mean that the air has that temperature, but it might be a close enough approximation.

    Once your wet, or frozen, filter dries or thaws, it's a small fan.
    Fill an Igloo cooler with ice, open the lid and have a fan blowing across the ice.
    Have the drain plug emptying into ice cube trays. Have a valet, or your middle child, taking the filled trays to your freezer, and refilling the cooler with ice as needed and possible.

I'm definitely returning this because it's just a waste of $139 as the noise is not a continuous sound but it rattles going up and down up and down and the regular Standalone fan is much more effective at blowing cool air. time before A/C in cars where you could buy one to hook on the passenger door and it would, using out side air flow blow cooler air into the vehicle.
    Some even had an electric motor to assist in blowing moist air into the vehicle. They relied on evaporation to cool you down; At best they were marginal
    and really did not provide cooler air to the vehicle but the larger units did work in homes out west where it was dry, The problem is they also were
    prone to produce mold in your home.

It’s been very hot here in Colorado lately and I’m on the 3 floor of my apartment building.(top floor). I do freeze the filter but another thing I do is fill the water tank only half way then I add ice cubes so it goes just below the fill line. I turn it on 10 minutes before my boyfriend gets home and I shut the bedroom door. When he gets home he complains about the how hot it is then he goes into the bathroom and he’s in heaven. It is a bit noisy but box fans are way louder when turned up on high. At night when I’m going to sleep I will turn it so it faces anymore. Only because it helps with my hot flashes from menopause. But overall I really like it and I’m going to get a couple more for my living room because it’s real big. My bedroom is pretty big.

I have mine in a 60 sqft. space, it does not cool the space! I will not recommend this product! Just put a bowl of ice in front of a desk top personal fan ($10). The science is that it is cooling based on evaporation. So if you room is humid, as well, it won't work.

    This works ok with me with a simple mod I did. What I did is I used one of my Vornado fan and put it behind the unit so the fan can force more air out to the cooler. For those who don't know what a Vornado fan is, look it up. It does wonders with the added Vornado fan blowing from behind the unit. Try that simple modification

    • @cobbler88
      @cobbler88 Před 2 lety +1

      A lot of these are just less messy versions of using a block of ice and a fan. Agree wholeheartedly on the Vornado. I wanted a fan for camping in my SUV, and there is one model that pushes a lot of air but requires so little energy to run that I can run it all night off a Jackery 240 and still have (if memory serves correct) about 2/3 of the charge left in the Jackery.
      It's worth the money (about $45, I believe) but there IS a Honeywell one they sell at Walmart for about $16. But it has 3 fixed fan settings and runs louder than the Vornado, which has a smooth dial to set the fan speed exactly the way you like it. It also takes way more juice to run (I think around 3x-4x as much) and doesn't push as much air when set equally quiet to the Vornado.

    These mini swamp coolers blow out humid air. It does not lower the room temperature even a tiny bit (I tested it) but when you let it blow on your skin it feels cool. That is due to the wind chill factor. (When your skin is wet it feels much colder in the wind than when it's dry.) So this gadget humidifies your skin when you let it blow on it, while its breeze evaporates the humidity from your skin, so its feels cool.

      Nope, never use an evap cooler when standard air conditioners are being used. A/C's dehumidify the air while evap coolers add humidity. You are actually making the A/C less efficient by adding the extra water vapor to the air that it now has to dump extra energy in to remove.

      it will just diminish the cooling effect if you use a large box fan to help push the air further basicly what will happen is youll defeat the purpose while sucking in warm air around the unit and the air coming from the unit youll basicly just have room temperature air circulating bad idea.

    • @fragglefknrock7568
      @fragglefknrock7568 Před 5 lety

      Same thing will happen with a normal Air unit that you put in a window. if you put a tower ocelating fan in front of it, the air will become less cool, especially if you just turned it on. Reason being, the surrounding air also gets sucked in and it all just funnels together increasing the temperature that the unit pushes towards the secondary fan. so lets say you have a unit pumping out 55-60f air itll be increased by 10 degrees if you put a large fan in front of it to help push. unless that fan has another cooling system. It will make it ineffective. this coming from experimentation of my own.
