  • "Doon po sa Amin", also known as the "Awit ng Pulubi" (Song of the Beggars) is an adaptation of the famous "Kundiman de 1800" by the composer Fransisco Santiago. The comical lyrics were written during the American occupation period when nationalist expressions were brutally silenced by the American colonisers.

Thank you for posting... The music is an intelligent, humorous allegory. A typical Philippine spirit - creating humour when oppressed... disabled people doing what they can not do... a poor town killing a fat animal (a pig maybe) to get 9 vats of oil... another town, cooking with water as fuel... the slow melancholic melody expresses really sadness in such oppression but the lyrics pokes fun.

Photo shows why they were still called Malays by foreign observers even in the 1890s. Add a stone walls to the silong and you have a "bahay na bato".
