I genuinely cried at the scene where Riley is explaining her feelings to her parents after she runs away, it was a good message to show and follow up Joy realizing the value of the other emotions, especially Sadness. I'm looking forward to seeing the sequel on Friday.

I cried at the running away scene, because I HAVE been there, having the urge to run away, even if not physically, but emotionally, just because it's all become to much to handle, it hit very close to home for me, and I hope the sequel does the first one justice, or else I will be so incredibly upset, because Inside Out is in my top 5 favorites
I could watch 2 on Disney + but that is reserved only if it’s good but I’ll be watching it from the high seas.

Fun fact. This movie actually made my dad cry. And he rarely cries. That scene with Riley breaking down acknowledging her memories in Minnesota towards the end of the movie got him tearing up.
I think this was either the 2nd or 3rd movie I’ve ever cried at. I rarely cry myself but I was around the same age of the MC when the movie came out and I related to her so much, so when she broke down, I did too. It’s crazy how good this movie was.
Strange, I laughed my ass off during that part.

This is 100% my favourite Pixar movie. And the moment that got me most was “we can’t make Riley feel… anything.” It was an absolute gut punch. I struggle with depression a lot and it summed it up so well. People think depression is sadness and it’s not. Depression is literally… nothing. Sadness is usually the way to dig out of depression. So sadness helping Riley recover (even though actual depression takes much longer to dig yourself out of) gave me ALL the feels. The sequel has a lot to live up to.

I mean... Sadness touching memories changing their emotion makes perfect sense given the end of the movie. Sadness was literally doing her job as all Riley's old memories *should* be sad now as she wasn't happy about moving.
That would also explain why the other emotions had no effect on the memories when touching them. Also, Sadness likely touched other memories without consequences in the first 11 years of Riley’s life. It’s like these memories were waiting for Sadness’s touch.

The premise of the sequel confuses me. You mean to tell me that Riley has never felt embarrassment, envy, boredom or anxiety before this?
More so that those emotions were originally simple enough to contain in the 5 others. As she grows though, those aspects prolly grew with her and require their own personification😊
I interpret is as her never being actively driven by those emotions before
Goofball island falling was the saddest part of this movie for me as a kid, because my dad and I are very goofy together and its how we bond :(

Get all that emotion out of you and you will be able to more properly think. Because keeping all that in will eventually start to turn you cynical and hateful of the world around you. Don’t hold it in. Crying is not a bad thing. You cry for a reason. Remember, you body knows more about you than you do. Just let it do its thing, stop resisting

As someone who struggled with deppression for a very long time, this movie had me crying for like 40% of its duration. Mostly when Sadness was interacting or when they focused on happy memories.

Having a movie just based on emotions is actually truly genius. Before this movie, Pixar was just bombing with their movies so they really needed this W.
It has the perfect plot/conflict too. It allows you to summarize the movie as "Two women venture through a warehouse on a quest to make a little girl cry"
Too bad this is happening again for the sequel. Pixar is once again taking an L with Lightyear and Elemental.

i think the reason sadness is the only one who converts the memories, is because when she thinks of them, she remembers how she will never be able to recreate them again.
You could make the same argument for the other characters. Disgust would be looking back on a positive memory and realized you acted cringy, anger is looking back and thinking you could've done better or were taken advantage of, and fear is looking back and lying awake at 11 PM worrying if someone will remember that and your whole reputation is ruined.

Do emotions have emotions? Think about it. The other emotions express each others jobs in a relative concept. Joy was overwhelmed with crippling failure (another term for sadness) to the point where she thought she wouldn't get out of the forgotten memory pit. Anger shows enthusiasm over something, which others may call concerning, when he sees an opportunity to retaliate (or something along the lines).
This then sparks the question; "Do imaginary friends have emotions?" I would've assumed that the answer is yes, but I'm willing to let others express their opinions. Or at least if the Pixar crew can add lore.

Realising that on a rewatch that Bing Bong's flower teased the orange emotion from the sequel. 6 petals, 5 are yellow, blue, green, purple and red, like the core emotions seen in this movie, but that the orange one didn't have a dedicated character known till the first trailer release.
