  • The very true story of the German reunification :-)
In today's crisis turmoil, it might even appear credible at some point...
    ----------------------------------------
    Anlässlich des Jahrestages der DDR
trat Erich Honecker am heutigen Tag...
    von all seinen Ämtern zurück.
    Was?
    Unsere Freunde in aller Welt
    seien versichert, dass der Sozialismus...
(Denis) In seiner Rede auf dem Empfang
zur Feier des Jahrestages der DDR...
    im Palast der Republik begründete
    Erich Honecker seinen Entschluss damit,
dass die in der DDR in den letzten Monaten
    erreichten Veränderungen...
    sein politisches Lebenswerk abschließen.
    Erich Honecker gratulierte...
dem neuen Generalsekretär des ZK der SED
und Vorsitzenden des Staatsrats der DDR:
    Was, der Jähn?
    unseren blauen Planeten...
    begeisterte immer wieder
    viele Menschen aus aller Welt.
    Vielleicht haben wir unser Ziel
    manchmal aus den Augen verloren.
    Doch wir haben uns besonnen.
    Sozialismus heißt nicht,
    sich einzumauern. Sozialismus heißt,
    auf den anderen zuzugehen,
mit dem anderen zu leben. Nicht nur
von einer besseren Welt zu träumen,
    sondern sie wahr zu machen.
    sondern sie wahr zu machen.
Ich habe mich daher dazu entschlossen,
die Grenzen der DDR zu öffnen.
(Denis) Schon kurz nach der Maueröffnung
    haben Tausende Bürger der BRD...
    die Möglichkeit genutzt,
der DDR einen ersten Besuch abzustatten.
    (Jubel)
    Viele wollen bleiben.
    Sie suchen nach einer Alternative...
    zum harten Überlebenskampf
    im kapitalistischen System.
    Nicht jeder möchte bei Karrieresucht
    und Konsumterror mitmachen.
    Nicht jeder ist für die
    Ellenbogenmentalität geschaffen.
    (Gesang) So ein Tag,
    so wunderschön wie heute...
    (Denis) Diese Menschen wollen ein
anderes Leben. Sie merken, dass Fernseher,
Videorekorder und Autos nicht alles sind.
Sie sind bereit, mit nichts anderem
als gutem Willen, Tatkraft und Hoffnung
    ein anderes Leben zu verwirklichen.
    Wahnsinn.

“Socialism doesn’t mean hiding behind walls, it means reaching to others. Living with others. Not to only dream about a better world, but to make the world a better place.”
This line gets me every time, despite the fantasy played throughout this scene, I still think that for all its flaws, the GDR was a beacon of hope for many. And will remain as such.

Socialism is just a byword for good things. So, everything that's good is socialistic because that's what "the people" would do. It's like when people were saying that nu metal isn't "real metal" because it isn't good.

I was a British Army soldier at the time I remember those heady days. The Cold war was over. We were achieving peace in North Ireland. Two wars , that shaped my life as a young soldier, the Cold war and North Ireland were over. I left the Army but stayed in the reserves. I really thought this was it. Finally humanity was going to advance. Then it started to go to shit, bit by bit. was called up for Kuwaite, then Bosnia, then Kosovo, then Iraq and now a never ending War on terror. How did my generation take the greatest price we were given the chance of global peace, and so screw it up for all the next generation, and generations to come,I think we were so used to the comfort of fear global nuclear war with the USSR. When given peace , it scared us and we dumped it for new threats and new comforting fears.

@@Sedna063 That's fair. Although, one thing you might interesting is the regime eventually stopped using the lyrics because they began to conflict with the party line.
