  • St JOHNS is the Capitol and largest city in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador . Its name is attributed to the belief that John Cabot sailed into the harbour on the Nativity of John the Baptist in 1497 ,although most likely a legend that came with British settlement
the dialect of Irish spoken in Newfoundland is said to resemble the Munster Irish of the 18th century,
7.5 milea away at Cape Spear , the purpose of the fortifications and underground tunnels etc was to protect the entrance to St Johns Harbour known as the Narrows , houses are often painted bright colours in the city a tradition started by sailors
In the harbour area houses cling to the rocky cliff edge right to the waters edge , at the seaward end of the harbour fortifications are still there as at Cape Spear , a footpath takes a route along a rocky cliff path all the way to the narrows and the sea , where the harbour mouth fortifications are seen
