      @@WatchitforDays I love the original series. But as this channel points out (in a very entertaining way), there are nits. I always found this ending a bit contrived. How did Columbo know what he was touching when he reached into the bag? It's almost as if the writers came up with the ending first, and backed tracked to make Columbo make all the right moves.

    This is, by far, my favorite Columbo takedown. I agree that Ross Martin's acting is what makes this episode. He is just such a smarmy, arrogant, pompous, weaselly little creep this whole episode (how could Artemus Gordon betray me so?). The killing his uncle, and then the accomplice/girlfriend is standard villainy, but framing his aunt for it, then telling the lawyer to have the house searched to prove she's innocent. And then he's all "Edna, how could you?" And his sputtering and shocked into silence when Columbo reveals he is wearing gloves! Pure gold!

    The look on his face when Columbo pulls out his hands, revealing the gloves, is PRICELESS. And this is one of my favorites of the whole series as well, mainly because of that ending. It's perfectly set up and perfectly executed. This is the kind of thing I aspire to create in my own writing.

      @@WatchitforDays I'm presently working on a flintlock fantasy story setting that I hope to get other writers and artists to help me create stories in it as a shared universe. I think the simplest description would be Lord of the Rings combined with Pirates of the Caribbean and a lot of RPG settings. So, lots of tricorn hats and black powder weapons but also lots of magic. One of the main ideas I'm trying to explore with it is "magic meets the Industrial Revolution." My flagship protagonist for the setting is a swashbuckling Half-Orc fashionista named Perdita Nightshade, who can kick butt six ways to Sunday but loves pretty things and looking pretty. (Orcs in my setting can be just as attractive as any other race and they're not universally evil. I'm also using the Roman Empire more as a basis for them, since there's the militant element with which Orcs are most often associated but in a more disciplined manner as opposed to the marauding barbarians Orcs are usually depicted as being.) I'm having a ton of fun with this project but I'm drawing inspiration from all kinds of sources for how to execute the stories, including Columbo. Good writers don't just look to their preferred genre for inspiration. They study the techniques of good storytellers in any genre to get examples of effective techniques.

    You are abolutely correct that almost nobody really notices the hands in the pockets during the final scene the first time you watch this episode - and I think there's a good (and pretty brilliant) explanation for why that is. It's because Columbo is "supposed" to have been basically spanked by Dale and the lawyer going over his head to force the search. I can actually remember thinking the first time I watched the scene that Columbo looked like a guy who had been "put in his place" so to speak. Walking around wih his hands in his pockets, kind of all tightly compressed - it looks like contrition, or perhaps embarrasment, and it works in a psychological sense given the circumstances so it isn't as odd or jarring as it might otherwise be. So the final reveal is a really great turn-around where it changes from contrition to control. Columbo was in charge the entire time.
    These deep dives are superb. Very nice work...and I really enjoy your narration. You have a great understated sense of humor.

      You used the part where Dale describes the artist as “penultimate.” That’s been a long standing laugh with a friend. There’s ULTIMATE, but even better is the PENULTIMATE. Lol. Do you think the writers were trying to make the character look silly, or did someone not know the meaning of the word?

    • @WatchitforDays
      @WatchitforDays  Před 2 lety +2

      I really should have made a joke about Dale saying penultimate because there have been several people in the comments pointing that one out to me, lol. I wouldn't be surprised if the writers used that word on purpose because most people do not know what penultimate means (at least, I thought they didn't...) so it would be a joke for those with an ultimate vocabulary.

    Cough. Yes, about the pastels. I'm a professional artist, working primarily in pastels and watercolors. What a lot of people think of as 'drawings' are classed as 'paintings', even though they have quite fine lines. The point is that the medium (the substance in which the pigment is applied) does not by itself determine whether a work is a painting or a drawing. And often, there is no real distinction you can make between the two. It's a judgment call : )

    Hello, my friend! Been MIA for a while but I made sure to see what my favorite CZcamsr has been up to and you did not disappoint as usual. I have to agree, this is the best gotcha of them all and the killer's blubbering, almost childlike, reaction really sold it. I was one of the ones who also didnt ask myself "Why are his hands in his pockets"? It just never occurred to me and that's the brilliance of the writing. It's like they're anticipating what we will (and will not) notice. Your attention to even the most minute details is once again is unmatched. And thank YOU again for being so cool. Just re-watched your 'Suitable for Framing' synopsis again. Luv it! Your's are the most comprehensive dissections of Columbo episodes available on CZcams. This episode is one of the few times Columbo gets called out for his stalkery. Dale said "You came all the way out here to tell me that??!!?" Priceless! Wish more of his victims woulda asked him that question more often. Because the reason(s) for his incessant visits (just happening to bump into -or- just in the neighborhood) were often never explained. Are most homicides solved by the police detective just loitering around a suspect 24/7?

    Ross Martin was a brilliant comic talent. They are always the best dramatic actors... they have that range. Ross was perfection in this episode. Undiagnosed (apparently) heart disease took him away from us way too soon... just 61 years old. That Marylin apartment is not on LaCienege.. but blocks west on Doheney. My friends lived in that very one for a few years. It's been torn down. I love looking at Don Ameche. There's even a hit song that mentions him (and Clark Gable) in a very thirsty way, from the days when he was the top Matinee Idol. You just know the scene is important when he is in it. Those groovy apartments are out by Capitol Records. I think I see my parent's station wagon (from before I came along) And my grandma's sedan. Just like theirs anyway. Those buildings are still there. Looking all mid-century and cool. Mary Wicks is a NATIONAL TREASURE! Walt Disney valued her highly! I discovered a rarely discussed role of hers on CZcams from a Disney TV show called "Annette" from 1957 where she plays the wisest wise cracking house keeper ever. She was the first to play Mary Poppins! She was also the animation model for Cruella DeVille a mere 9.5 years before shooting Columbo. Can you imagine? They got lucky when they found her available for this gig. Here is a perfect short documentary about Mary: czcams.com/video/0yFM2CH98HI/video.html

Rembrandt was a notoriously eccentric and rebellious artist in his day and did not do things by the Academic book , so to speak. No memory or awareness of many of the shows you name. Just surprises me. I do recall Columbo in real time, as well as the other shows in that rotation. McMillian and Wife was another favorite.
