    Ted Danson was extremely worried about his daughter getting nightmares from his seaweed-draped zombie makeup, so he composed a script in his head for how to comfort her. When she saw him in full makeup, she simply said, 'hi Dad' and kept walking.

    Leslie Neilsen was type cast as a villain for the majority of his career. When he was cast as the lead in the original Police Squad, critics were all "Leslie Neilsen can't do comedy!" Then his whole career got a new life to it, and he's been know for being a comedic actor ever since.

      He was Francis Marion THE SWAMP FOX in Disney's TV mini-series of the same name - an heroic figure in the Revolutionary War found in the southern coastal communities. His first feature film he was The Reporter in Glenn Ford's original version of RANSOM (young boy kidnapped from rich parents). But on TV, Leslie was sometimes cast a villain (or The villain) in episodes. He did a couple of villain roles in COLUMBO episodes but his career was dwindling, then he appeared in AIRPLANE and producers realized they could use him as a straight-man in absurd comedies. What a great thing after that!

    • @richardb6260
      @richardb6260 Před 7 měsíci +15

      Neilsen appeared in Airplane! before he did Police Squad (in color). That's where he began his comedy career. The writer/directors cast a number of dramatic actors (Neilsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges) because they wanted them to deliver their lines like they would in dramatic roles.
      Neilsen wasn't always cast as villains. He began as a leading man and romantic interest in films like Forbidden Planet and Tammy and the Bachelor. He also starred as Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion in Disney's The Swamp Fox. He did play a lot of villain of the week roles on shows like The Man from UNCLE, Wild Wild West, and Columbo. Neilsen continued to do mostly dramtic roles even after Airplane!. It wasn't until the success of The Naked Gun that he started to do comedy exclusively.

    This film was inspired by classic EC Comics series such as The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, and Tales from the Crypt. A year after this film came out, George Romero would create the syndicated TV series Tales from the Darkside as a sort of follow-up to Creepshow. That series would get its own film, which is also an anthology horror movie with a wraparound segment. In fact, the TFTD film would feature a segment that had been intended for Creepshow II, and Tom Savini regards it as essentially another Creepshow sequel.

    The marble ashtray can be seen in all the sequences. This is also true for the new Creepshow TV series on Shudder. Yes, they made the comic to go along with the movie but it did come afterwards. The roaches are real, they were brought in from Brazil, something like 50,000 of them. They were the single most expensive thing on the movie. There is artwork of the wife making the last call to Pratt in his "safe" room. She is surrounded by witchcraft paraphernalia implying she cast a curse on him to cause this, but it was never shown in the movie. Tom Savinni is the skinny garbage man with the mustache seen at t he end. Creepshow 2 is ok but not as great. Tick'R'Treat (which I think you already watched) is the real Creepshow 2.

So not hard to cast part two as “inferior” to the original, but part two is still worthwhile. Hopefully Kat reacts to it at some point. For more 80’s practical effects goodness she needs to check out “The Howling” and “Fright Night.” For scares and screams she needs to check out “What Lies Beneath.” I can’t wait! 😈

No one acknowledges Creepshow 3 and frankly we shouldn't as no one from the first two were involved. It's also reportedly terrible, and not in a good way. Yes, those were indeed real roaches. According to Romero, they payed something like $.50 per roach, and used about 250,000 of them. Fun fact, when Tom Savini, who hates bugs with a passion, worked on that segment; so when he noticed on on his hand, he TELEPORTED across the room, having freaked out momentarily and completely lost all recollection of traversing the distance.

    • @masterjoelnathan
      @masterjoelnathan Před 7 měsíci +2

      Actually that's just a hypothetical; Romero stated that's the cost if you wanted to buy bugs off a catalogue for filming. But 50cents per NY roach would've been steep. So he went the more economical route and got two entomologists to go to Trinidad where roaches could be found in batcaves living in feces. Hence why a lot of this roaches (the larger ones with the weird patterns) don't look like an average roach, it's cause they're not from the US.

    I was so happy to see you watch this! Yes, we are a very cool club. I watched a documentary or a segment on the making of this movie, and I remember George A. Romero stating that many of the cockroaches were actually raisins because they couldn't control/afford that many cockroaches. He said that they had a roach wrangler on set that swears that the guy would talk to the roaches, tell them what to do, and that they would follow his instructions to the letter. I think they also mentioned that roaches still showed up on the soundstage for months after that segment was filmed. You caught a lot of details that I've never noticed before, and I have seen this many times. If you liked this, you should watch Cat's Eye. It's only three stories, and there aren't many practical effects, but it's a fun watch.

    The cockroaches were all real if you saw them moving around. The movie had bug wranglers who went to South America and got the biggest, nastiest ones they could dig out of caves full of bat guano. To do Upson Pratt vomiting roaches, Tom Savini and his crew did a full cast mold of E.G. Marshall, then rigged it with a huge push tube up into the mouth and another up out of the chest, so the roaches could be pushed out. Some of the cave roaches were bigger than a computer mouse. For huge mounds of roaches, like in Pratt's bed, they made a pile of brown nuts, chestnuts, and other brown shapes, then covered that with a layer of real roaches.

    The thing about Creepshow was that it was inspired by the line up of horror comics by EC Comics during the 1950s; Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Haunt of Fear. The film did release a graphic novel of the film, with artwork by Bernie Wrightson, who was also a fan of the EC horror comics.
    Following Creepshow came two TV spinoffs in the 80s (Tales from the Darkside, Monsters), the modest sequel five years later (Creepshow 2), a film adaptation of Darkside (which fans call Creepshow 3 as well), the shitty straight to video sequel in '06, and the streaming series on Shudder/AMC+. The streaming series would release their own line of comics under the same name as the franchise with original stories.

    If you notice this shot (16:00) at the end of the story that Stephen King starred in, the road sign that says "Castle Rock 5"? That was a nod to King's favorite creepy town in Maine. He had written many short stories based in that town. Ironically, years later, Hulu developed a horror series called "Castle Rock", which was based on many of King's short stories and novels that were set in favorite town in Maine. Just some trivia I thought I'd share with you Kat! By the way, I love your reaction to this movie! This was always one of my favorite horror movies growing up in the 80s. :)

    This was great fun, Kat. I saw "Creepshow" with my brother on opening day back in '82 and we had a blast. I also got to meet George Romero and John Harrison, the film's composer, at a release party for the film's soundtrack and they signed my copy of the album. George Romero was a very humble, funny guy, who just sort of stumbled into film with "Night of the Living Dead" and "Creepshow" is a perfect meeting of Romero and King.
    The guy with the matches is Ed Harris in his first film role. He also starred in Romero's "Knightriders."
    Ted Danson did this film not long after he had done the police film "The Onion Field" with James Woods. This was *years* before "Cheers" and he was almost an unknown here.
    Leslie Nielson was still mostly known for dramatic roles when he did this. His roles in "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun" were still years in the future.
    In Adrienne Barbeau's scene in "The Crate," where Henry shoots her in the head, the explosive squib blowing the blood out of her head actually scared her. Her reaction as she is "shot" is genuine.
    Yes, the bugs in "They're Creeping Up On You" were all real. There were two bug wranglers on the film and the penthouse set was specially built to keep them in(they still got out). E.G. Marshall actually handled being covered in bugs for most of the shoot, except for one instance when a large(4"+) cockroach crawled down the back of his shirt. The shot of the bugs bursting out of his body was a mannequin with the bug wranglers literally pushing the bugs up through the chest cavity and out of its mouth and chest. Yeesh!

    Creepshow is an homage to horror comics of the 1950s published by EC Comics, such as Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear. Following the publication of the book, ‘Seduction of the Innocent' by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham in 1954, where he accused comic books of promoting juvenile delinquency in minors, many comic book companies were hit with censorship rules by conservative politicians in the U.S. government, and EC Comics ended up going out of business as a result.

    Yes. Real roaches. A lot of them. They pumped them through a giant syringe through a dummy of E.G. Marshall. These were all King ideas or stories. Weeds and The Crate were previously published. The comic book was published around the time the film was released. This was an homage to the horror comics if the 1950s including Tales from the Crypt (later to be a TV series on HBO). There were also two British films made in the 1970s called Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Horror.

    "Creepshow" was inspired by the EC Comics (Tales From The Crypt, Vault Of Horror, Weird Science, etc) of the 1950s. There is a whole wild story about the comics industry being hauled in front of Congress because of the content of EC and their competitors. It led to the creation of the "Comics Code".

    The monster in the crate is named "Fluffy" in the script. If he managed to survive inside that box for decades without food, then I figure he's gotta be some kind of supernatural ageless monster.

    The Creepy black ashtray from the first segment is a main stay in the creepshow stories .. it's in every story of the movies and t.v.show on Shudder.... It's in every episode somewhere and it's always there to spot and even make a game or drinking game with friends.

    This film is an homage to EC Comics. In the 50's EC produced well-regarded horror and Sci Fi anthology comics like Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, and Weird Science. They had top notch artists and writers and influenced a number of writers and filmmakers including Stephen King.
    This anthology style of film where there are several stories in one film goes back to silent film. There were several excellent examples in the 70s produced by Amicus Films. They include Tales from the Crypt and Asylum (two of my favorites). Others include Vault of Horror, Tales that Witness Madness, and The House that Dripped Blood. Many adapt stories from the aforementioned EC Comics. In the 80s, HBO produced a TV series called Tales from the Crypt that also adapted stories from EC Comics.
    Another good anthology film that adapts stories by Stephen King is Cat's Eye.
