We recently adopted an 18 month Pyrenees male. We are his 4th home. We have always had Kangal dogs and have a 4 year old female now. Bear is so different from our Kangals. But has been wonderful in his role as a guardian. So many people are getting LGDs with no idea of what is necessary, or how much drive to guard is in them. Giving Bear the home where he can be what he was meant to be is very rewarding. If you have LGDs, think about renewing your pack with a rescue. We need them and they need us.

There is no dog more noble than a guardian dog.
If I was in better health I'd have another Sarplaninac tomorrow. Two in fact to replace the Mr & Mrs team that passed away in 2020 (the big male, Oscar) and Zara, the female, in 2021. They were 11 and 12 respectively.
Dylan helps to ease the pain of their loss. Dylan is a rather silly and very adorable 2 year old Bernese mountain dog.
And a proper villain he is too.
    Your dogs are gorgeous.

I also name my animals biblical names. I currently have a Scottish terrier named Caleb and a Sealyham terrier named Justus Acts 1 vs 23. I thought you might like Justus. I used to have Mastiffs growing up but as I’m older now I choose a smaller breed now. The following names are ones I had for my mastiffs this is over my years:
    Canaan
    King David
    Michael
    Sarah
    Rebekah
    Rachael
I also had two horses: an Arabian mare I named Rayhab the harlot. I called her Ray as in ray of light. She was breed just before I got her and her colt I named Song of Solomon.
All I loved very much. I still have it in my head that I would like to a large breed dog again. Maybe someday unless Maranatha!
I enjoy watching your dogs very much and the puppy is gorgeous.

We just got a 8wk GP puppy to protect our pigs and goats. They’re free range in fenced off 5 acre pasture behind our house. My husband read online that we shouldn’t introduce him to our 5 house dogs (all Australien Shepherds). I feel we should because they’re outside when I’m out and when weather permits.

    • @BigHornMountainAlpacas
      @BigHornMountainAlpacas Před 10 měsíci

I would introduce him to all the dogs and the whole family. 8 weeks is such a youngster and they need so much nurturing and love at that age. For sure he's way too young to be out alone with goats and pigs, not even for an hour. Especially if he doesn't have a dog friend and mentor out there. I'd bring him in the house and treat him well and in return when he's older you will have a much more happy and well adjusted guardian dog.

Most dogs will be a little nervous around puppies. In fact, many domesticated pets will be nervous around a new "baby" in their territory. This is perfectly normal and it wears off quickly with proper introductions as you've done. You may have to keep it up for a while, but it'll pass. He will integrate. It can take from a couple of days to a couple of weeks and sometimes, a couple of months until you can trust he will be safe without you. It all depends on the pack's general nature. I've experienced this with many species. There is one main and sensible reason for why animals do this. Namely: If there's a baby, there may be a mama....and we all know a mama can be very dangerous protecting her babies. It's really as simple as that. Domesticated doesn't mean they've completely forgotten wild instincts. As such, they prefer to avoid that baby and perhaps even warn it off. I rarely worry about a few turned up noses, snorts or growls when a new one comes home. It rarely amounts to much (but I'm still there to keep the peace). A good pack will fall into place in its own time and when the pack leader is doing it right, it happens faster.
Welcome Barnabus! You hit the jackpot with your new home, kiddo. ♥
