Sadly society has become too sensitive to many descriptions, many years ago I was in the lobby of a restaurant waiting to be seated. The staff write notes in the "appointments book" so they can recognise which customer they are referring to. IE they might write "check shirt", I am good at reading fast even upside down text and saw myself listed as "big belly", I thought it was funny but the staff member dug a bigger hole by apologising profusely. With us Brits, we are somewhat ruthless in the way we talk about people and also the names we call people. Even our close friends/best friends are not without monikers that you guys would deem really, really offensive. For us it's not just a term of endearment but also a judgement call on how a person reacts to being called the name we give them. If they become offended by it, then we switch from offensive names to 'piss taking offensive' names and they don't become part of our circle of friends.
If you walked into a pub in the UK and listened to conversations, you would probably think we all hated one another and be shocked at the discussions when in fact the opposite would be true.

I'd argue that mong is even more offensive than the "r" word, just based off of it's origins. the "r" word can be used to just mean slow. For example, when someone says to "r" word the timing of a car, it just means to slow it down. That's why it's used for people with Down Syndrome, cause they're being called slow. The British slang is worse, and it can be looked up, so I don't need to repeat it here.
