Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
The series also stars Kirby (“The Sandman”), Amy Ryan (“The Wire”), Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry (“Mindhunter”), Alex Hernandez (“Invasion”), and James Cromwell (“Succession”), with guest stars Anna Gunn (“Breaking Bad”) and Sydney Chandler (“Don't Worry Darling”).
Sugar is created by Mark Protosevich who also executive produces. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg executive produce for Genre Films, marking their second series with Apple TV+ under Kinberg’s overall deal following “Invasion.” Colin Farrell, Sam Catlin, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich also serve as executive producers. The series was directed by Fernando Meirelles (“City of God,” “Two Popes”), who also executive produces, and Adam Arkin (“The Offer”), who also co-executive produces.

Colin Farrell is a capable actor who alone directs all the interesting scenes in this series, and this series becomes more spectacular with Colin the superstar of cinema. 🔥🔥🔥❤🔥

I was really looking forward to the show, until I saw that god awful Ai generated intro and then things started to go downhill a bit from there on the technical side of things. The show has some gorgeous cinematography here and there but then again it suddenly changes style with some outa place shaky camera works, and bad framing to a point that I feel like the frame was cropped too much. That aside, there are moments that two characters are engaged in dialogues and then midpoint there's a cut and then the character is completing his dialogue in a whole another situation, like, say they were standing and they were saying blah, blah- and the third "blah" comes suddenly when we see the character spawn on the other side of that location sitting on a chair, like seriously what the heck?! Really strange directional choices, I admit. Sudden change of aspect ratio to make us feel connected to some of those film noirs that Sugar loves? Yeah, that didn't work either, sorry. And neither did the Tokyo sequence being shot in black and white, it didn't add anything to the story, it didn't mean anything thematically. It was just the way it was cause the creators apparently felt it could be "stylish". As I said. Strange directional choices. The story is solid though. And I just love Colin Farrell. So we'll see how things turn out from there.
