    ATTENTION:
    For the US Mask-Makers:
Requirements ARE constantly evolving. This tutorial was made BEFORE the tip from the nurse mentioned that the mask HAD TO HAVE 2 different colours. This can still be easily done using this tutorial. Just cut 2 separate pieces of 8” x 8.5” (width x height) and join and sew with 0.5” seam allowance. Roll in the seams as usual but leave the gap right at the bottom instead of rolling it behind. The reason why I used one solid piece of fabric for this tutorial initially - was to save time. Using 2 different pieces to make the mask means double the cutting time and an extra line to sew. Hope this helps.

Hope it helps more people get on board with wearing homemade masks.
In this video, I showed 2 ways of securing the mask - by elastic cords and tying by twill tapes. There’s also a little more precision in pleating if “winging the pleats” isn’t your favorite thing.
Towards the end of the video, I also shared how you can make adjustable elastic loops by tying fisherman’s knots. Fixed length elastics isn’t my favorite way to sew up masks actually as I prefer a little more flexibility to adjust the length. 🙂
    Stay safe everyone!

Hi! Thank you for all the love and feedback. I’ll try to answer some commonly asked questions.
    1) what wire is that?
Those are twist ties, those that you could wrap around electronic wires to keep them neat.
    2) what music is that?
I’m sorry but I really have no idea. 😂
It’s a piece of music that came with the video editing app I’m using (splice).
    3) why do we need 2 separate colours for the front and back?
So that it is easier to differentiate the side that was worn facing the face (you do not want the exterior touching your face). When I decided to make this video at the early onset of the US covid outbreak, that feedback has not come in yet. My goal was to create the simplest mask that required the least cutting, and could be mass-produced in the shortest amount of time. Covid hit Singapore earlier and I have been playing with various masks designs for some time. Hence I thought I would share my experience with the rest.
    4) can we have a written tutorial pls?
I would love to get to that. However things are not looking good for Singapore at the moment and there are more urgent matters that take precedence right now. I promise I would try to get one up once I can finally breathe. Meanwhile, the *pause* button is there to help you slow down, read and digest. Or playback at a slower speed. I apologize for the quick wording. I’m not a seasoned CZcamsr. It’s the best video editing I could manage in that short period of time. 🙏🏻
    5) what are the kid sizes?
Again, this was meant to help the US sewists in need of a simple pattern to get started. Hence there were no kids dimensions then.
However, I have went on to draft more kid sizes. Here’s sharing them with you.
    Toddler - 6” x 14”
    Kid - 7” x 14”
The toddler sizing was drafted following a standard kid’s surgical mask in the market. I then made it wider to suit the kid’s sizing. Pleating dimensions are in cm however as I found it hard to work with inches.
Pleating markings are at the following positions:
    2.5cm, 4.5cm, 5.5cm, 7.5cm, 8.5cm, 10.5cm
Height of the toddler and kid mask should be about 14cm.
    6) what machine/footer am i using?
Its a Juki qvp mini TL2200. I am using a slim teflon footer.
Hope that answers most of your questions. Thank you my friends. Stay safe!
    ❤️, from Singapore 🇸🇬

Other ideas for the nose piece: **[EDITED to add ideas contributed by fellow viewers]**
sections of disposable "foil" plates (for pies, cakes, roasting), floral wire, bread and favor bag ties, plant ties (like bread ties, they are thin wire usually covered in green plastic and come in a roll, find them at garden centers or the florist) the long part of metal file folder fasteners, trash bag ties, U-shaped hair pins, wax-coated cord tripled over and covered in freezer tape, jewelry wire, Xmas tree ornament hooks, paper clips, pipe cleaners if you can find them, heavy duty aluminum foil folded over enough times to make it thicker, as someone already mentioned...even sections of wired "fancy" ribbon stacked up would help with the contouring over the nose. I'm listing all of these because we often have things in boxes, cupboards, and junk drawers that we don't remember are there. If none of these pliable things are available, darts on either side of the nose would help the mask fit tighter.

Instead of flannel, I stick with iron on interfacing & 1/4 " elastic to fit over ears. I ordered nose clips from Amazon, I opened the package to find it empty. I can't get anyone by calling or writing. My mask stays up with out them anyway. Good Luck!.

For all the masks I've tried, this is my favorite! I like the one piece of fabric. I always put the filter opening towards my face, so I don't have a problem with accidentally switching sides. I have made 1 change; I put the opening for the filter at the top, and put the slot for a nose piece in the top flap of that opening. At the 1:35 mark in this video when you are measuring 1-1/2" for the filter opening, I measure in 1 more in on each side and put a mark (so, 1-1/2 & 2-1/2). Before sewing the 2 sides together I sew a line down the hem between each 2-1/2" mark. This gives me the nose wire slot. I normally do both sides so I don't have to worry later about which one has the space. Once the mask is complete, I just unfold /unroll that top flap, slide in the wire & roll it back up, then it's tucked nicely between layers of fabric for a bit of cushion. My teen uses this size exactly, I needed 9x18. I like that it's so easy to adjust the pattern, just a square! And there is not a seam down the middle of our face with the extra little needle holes like many other masks. Now, depending on where we are going, decides what we use as a filter. Thank you so much!!! This was easy to follow, and I love the idea of the sailor knots too!

Some tips that are helpful to me when I made this:
    1. If you don't have wonder clips. Then use little girl snap hair clips. It worked for me!
    2. Go to 3:06 to insert twill tape. If not skip to 5:00
    3. Go to 8:15 for Fisherman's knot. To skip this knot go to 9:15
    4. The step to insert wire is at 9:16.
    5. If you are using wire, fold the two ends in on itself so that it does not poke the person wearing it.
    5. Colour code your pins so when you are matching them up it is just a tad easier. (1+2) (2.5+3.5) (4+5).
I might add some more tips when I make the more one. Great video!

You can improve the filter by inserting 2-3 coffee filters into the pocket . To kill more virus make a 1% iodine / alcohol spray and spray it on one of the filter papers . Let dry overnight then place in mask first followed by plain filters . Iodine kills more than 99% of all bacteria and viruses . 1% Povidone iodine mouthwash is also available as a spray solution source . As a former Army medic (1965 +) we used iodine glycerol spray for nasty throat infections when nothing else helped . Not 100% protection but much better than nothing . Keep safe !

Old armymedic Bill I hope nobody minds, I copied this from Washington Post:
“Peter Tsai, the materials scientist who invented the electrostatic charging technology that N95 masks - the highest-quality medical masks on the market - rely on, recommended using car shop towels as mask material. The towels, available in rolls and often blue in color, would do a better job of filtering droplets than cloth, he said. The material is “very strong,” he said. “And it can be washed with soap and water and reused.”
So, a roll of these towels can produce more that 300 inserts. No need for anyone to hoard, just get a roll and use your scissors. 😉

COUPLE TIPS! I've done about 50 of these masks similar to this - but I put the wire in one of the first folds (0:45). SO much easier! This encases the wire (in my case, floral wire) and there is no need to do the last bit where she creates the insert at the end. (My filter pocket winds up at the top of the mask). Thank you for the best tutorial out there!! I also created a template for the folds. I do about 20 at a time. When sewing up the sides - I insert the next mask and keep going - clipping between them at the end (of course - double-back at the beginning and end of each mask).

This is such an easy pattern to follow.
Just a word of caution. These masks are not a one-size-fits-all. If you are heavy or have an extremely round/wide face this mask is going to be small/narrow on you. I'm a large girl and this mask only covers my face less than 2 inches beyond my mouth.
The height is good. It's just the width.
The best thing to do is to measure your face from about one inch in front of your left ear across the tip of your nose to about one inch in front of your right ear. Make your pattern 1 inch larger than that measurement to account for 1/2 inch seam allowance on both sides. When the mask is the proper width, you won't need 20 inches of fabric for the ties.

I have been wearing a different home made mask on errands for a couple weeks. Yours is much better. I plan to make two for my grandchildren. Today we will search in their donation bag Of clothes to find a fun pattern. The fisherman’s tie will be a great help and using pipe cleaners for the wire. I have also used the waist band from panty hose for the elastic.

So, i made quite a rew of this masks (and still making them) to give to friends and neighbors and bt trial and error i found a little harder to insert the pipe cleaner so i cut each piece 8" abd doubled it to make it 4" and the part wher i folded i inserted making it easier to do it.
Another thing i did i took wire i had to hang pictures and cut it 2 or 3 times 4" twisted around seversl times and was easy to insert and take out to was the mask.
Another tip that saves me time since i m cutting and making many at a time, is to instead of taling the time initially with a ruler and pins to mark where pins are going to go is since we use the cutting mats as a background lay the mask down and mark with a chalk or a pencil by counting the inches on the the mat. I hope this helps. Great video Thank u.

But I'd love to make for our home town EMTs, first responders, nursing home and others needing them.

I followed your fantastic tutorial but made 2 little changes to make it more suitable for my particular needs. First, I stitched one of the ends of the nose piece channel closed to keep the wire from sliding side to side. Second, I pieced "casings" from leftover fabric to the sides of the mask (after the pleats were sewn) so I can run one continuous length of cord or ribbon through them. I find that type of tie more comfortable to wear when the mask needs to be on for hours. (I will explain "my" ties below, if anyone is interested). I truly appreciated how well you showed how to properly space out the pleats and indicated that the edges need to go down when one is looking at the front of the mask. Thank you for this service to the community!
My preferred tie method: After the pleats are sewn, stitch quilt binding bias tape (or make a casing out of leftover fabric) on each side of the mask. Starting from the bottom opening of one casing, thread up one end of the cord or ribbon. Pull the length across the top of the mask, and thread down the casing on the opposite side. Now you can slide the top section of the cord over your ears, cinch it to adjust the contours of the mask your face, and tie the ends of the cord behind your neck. Long shoelaces, 3/8 grosgrain ribbon, polyester clothesline (3/16 inch), and 1/2 inch twill tape folded in half and stitched to make a 1/4 inch ribbon work great for this application. Elastic cord with the fisherman knot you showed would be fabulous, too, but there's none to be found around me or online! Thanks again. I'm sewing 1 masks today and will use your directions.

Irai Rod thank you for the feedback! Yes actually I do prefer the elastic going through the sides too. But the casing may be fiddly for some and take a longer time. Goal was to mass produce in the shortest time.

@@SewingSeedsOfLove Yes, I agree, it does add time, it takes a bit more sewing experience, and it probably costs a bit more in materials, too. The way you showed is fantastic for those wanting to make bunches and bunches of masks...and right now we need as many as we can get!
I made some (other) very contoured masks that I adore, but each takes about an hour from cutting to lacing. Not at all good for mass production, unless it's a family with several machines and each person can work one part of the process, assembly line style...Wouldn't that be a beautiful project to take on for a household with several sewists? Thanks again for your tutorial. I'm using it right now!

Can you please clarify the measurements of the seams along the short Edge please.
You said to fold the short Edges a 1/2 inch. But you folded each edge twice.
Was each fold 1/4 inch (totalling 1/2 inch on each edge) or 1/2 inch totalling 1 inch on each edge).
Either way the math does not add up.
If you sew each Edge a 1/2 inch (1/4 inch + 1/4 inch) that makes for a total of 1 inch. This would give a total mask height of 7 in.
If you sew each Edge 1 inch (1/2 inch + 1/2 inch) that makes for a total of 2 inches. This would give a total mask height of 6 inch.
Neither case works out to 6 1/2 inches.
In addition when you were stitching from The Edge 1 1/2 inches in, you said to use a half inch seam allowance. That would only be possible if you folded each 8 inch side a 1/2 inch + 1/2 inch for a total of 1 inch. Again making the total height of the Mask 6 inches, not 6 1/2 inches.
The only way you can get a total mask height of 6 1/2 inch is if your total folds on each 8 inch Edge worked out to no more than 3/4 of an inch.
      3/4 + 3/4 = 1 1/2
      8 - 1 1/2 = 6 1 l/2

Even though I hand-sewed this mask, it turned out so good! A little time consuming, but the results made up for it. The only thing I changed is the length of the elastic. I found mine surprisingly at the dollar store bc everywhere else is sold out or takes a long time to get sent to me. So my elastic isn’t as stretchy or forgiving on the ears. So what you did cut, might actually work for you.

The pleats don't matter that much, do the best you can. I've worn homesewn masks at the hospital that had 2 pleats, 3 pleats, box pleats - we appreciate everything.

  • @deborahrobertsoncartwright8176

I likes the design. The only thing I did different was when I added the pleats I laid the fabric flat and measured then folded the creases across and ironed them and pinned both sidea at once then ran the sewing machine once both sides were pressed and pinned into place. It went very quickly this way and turned out nice

Long-time sew-er here, relatively new to mask-making. The double fold on the pocket opening is overkill, since that will be hidden in the folds once worn. I'd just fold it over and top-stitch.
Other than that, best design I've found!

    • @SewingSeedsOfLove
      @SewingSeedsOfLove  Před 4 lety +19

veloise hi, thank you for your feedback. True that they’ll be hidden. But if the edges are folded only one time, they’ll start fraying once it’s been washed many times. Hence I double-folded it to keep them away.

    • @lauramclean515
      @lauramclean515 Před 4 lety +1

I am doing double fold as well. I figure these things are going to be subjected to more washing/sanitizing than most so I am going the extra mile. Too much time and materials invested for them to fall apart but that’s just my opinion.

Tip: To make it easier for the nose piece you can always add it inside first then sew around it.

    • @notconvincedgranny6573
      @notconvincedgranny6573 Před 4 lety

You would have to be careful not to sew through it. But you have to be able to remove the wire to wash the mask.

You did a great job on this tutorial. thank you! I've watched numerous videos on tying fisherman knots and you do it so simply and made it so easy! It's easy to know front from back without different colors - the side with the filter pocket is the back.

Thanks so much for a great tutorial! This is the fourth mask tutorial I've tried and by far the easiest and best! I used one fabric folded but will mark the wrong side with either an embroidered X or permanent marker. Feels good to finally have the pattern of choice! I hit "like" and subscribed as it's the only way I can thank you! Best to you and stay well!

You can cut up an AC filter- just buy the best rated ones- they are expensive but can be cut into many inserts for your masks

    • @hopecummins8062
      @hopecummins8062 Před 4 lety +2

I did buy one. And I ripped it to shreds because the expensive ones have really good adhesive stuck in the cardboard. I’ll stick to the blue paper towels that are in my garage. They are thick and work great
